I really would have liked to see how the 440mi 350kw Silverado EV would have performed in this test. ☹️ Could we get an estimate of how it would have performed based on how the other vehicles performed in the real world vs on paper, then reduce the Silverado’s on paper performance to match? 🙏
@junehanzawa51652 ай бұрын
@@CorvisStrife It's extra weight and size, and therefore, lack of efficency compared to these smaller vehicles, would not have been fair to include it. Especially at these higher speeds. Perhaps in the future it can be included in an ALL EV's race just to see.

@@CorvisStrife It would have got smoked, it charges fast on working 350kW chargers, but at 85 RIP and getting stuck on anything else will just kill it. Efficiency is going to be a third of that lucid with only a little better charging.
@CorvisStrife2 ай бұрын
@@junehanzawa5165 The intro said “the longest range and fastest charging EV’s” so it would be appropriate to include. In his review Kyle remarked on how good it would be as a roadtripping EV. A poor result would still be interesting and would provide valuable context on two different methodologies. High capacity with high charging speeds spread out over a huge number of cells for higher charging curves. Versus lower capacities with more moderate charging curves and higher efficiencies. The extra weight would come into play climbing mountains but would partially be offset by the down mountain regen. Weight is not so much a factor on level ground, which the middle of the country is mostly flat. The increased wind drag at higher speeds may be countered by higher charging speeds and less frequent stops skipping over inferior chargers. The Teslas can use the Tesla & EA chargers while everyone else is limited to EA. The Chevy would be able to use the Tesla chargers but wouldn’t be able to hit its full charging speed that it can on EA chargers due to the difference in voltages. So it would be an interesting choice for the drivers to make. A poor result can still be interesting. And a surprising performance that exceeds expectations is always fun content.

The Taycan was felt like it was BUILT for these kinds of races. Consistent 300 kw charging from low up to 80%, no throttling at all and seems to roadtrip like a Le Mans race. The struggles from both EA and even Superchargers now feel like the bottleneck for any EV moreso than the cars themselves. Poor Kyle in the i7 though, surprising how much better the similar priced EQS is doing in comparison even though it is lambasted for its egg like looks. The Ioniq 6 being the least expensive yet keeping pace with the rest of the group is also commendable.

This series is very good. There is so much to learn from how efficient the cars are to how fast they can take a charge. The earlier videos had me trying to figure out the range efficiencies and kwh/miles calculations and such but I think I am catching on. Jordan - doing a great job, someone mentioned a "place" tag after each car but I notice so many times, the drivers listing out where the cars are in relation to each other. Maybe at the end of those comments, a quick 2-3 seconds of the times they are behind the Acura. like this below Acura = Lead Taycan = +2H Model 3 = +3.25H Lucid = +4H etc.. Old Model S = Still in Idaho on their 35th charging stop That model 3 is the most impressive of the bunch. What a sweet bargain.

Get the interstates lined out, a charging station at every service station or rest area (so roughly every 30-50 miles), and then start working with towns to have just something. Lots of nav systems in this episode having serious issues calculating range, SOC on arrival. Need to add to the list of Never trust the BMS, and Never trust the NAV arrival SOC, ABC, Always be charging deeper than you think. If you have to limp on the road you are losing time you can't make up. Don't get trigger happy and leave a charger if you have a good charge session. Charge a little deeper than you think you need. An EQS observation. It actually showed the weather on the route in the nav, that is AWESOME. All of these nav systems should overlay the weather or provide an icon you can click on to see what is going on with the wind and weather on your route. If it is accurate I love it.
@brucemcdouАй бұрын
@Longsnowsm (there's gotta be a story about that name): Totally agree - I"m currently on my second R/T from San Francisco to Indiana in my Kia EV6 (visit my elderly Mom) and the car's estimated range and the limited CCS charging options on I-80 have trained me to ALWAYS charge to 90-95%. Along with hitting cold snowy weather in Wyoming! Fortunately, my car charges so quickly it's really just another couple minutes inside the generic Walmart/Target/grocery store that an EA is usually in front of. Better to have range buffer than limping on an isolated stretch of highway with lifted 4X4's roaring past you, laughing...
@LongsnowsmАй бұрын
@@brucemcdou As you have seen the Nav SOC estimates clearly don't know what the weather is doing either. I had one leg where my arrival SOC was supposed to be like 21% and I drove into really bad wind and rain. Well the good news is that the rain forced everyone to slow down, but it wasn't enough to offset the hit to range and my arrival SOC. So I ended up limping a little on that leg of the trip also. I think it is just a good idea to spend an extra 5 minutes and pad whatever the Nav system told you to leave with at the very least. Watching this installment of the Surge it is interesting to watch the teams trying to cut those stops short and it more times than not bites them.

All we here about is how EVs will slow down a road trip too much to be practical. Meanwhile, these cross country "races" show that you actually don't have time to eat or sleep properly because the charging stops are too short.
@ab-tf5flАй бұрын
The lack of time to sleep or eat properly has everything to do with the fact that it's a race, and nothing to do with the cars being EVs. Remember, you don't *have* to unplug the minute you have enough energy to reach the next charger; if you're in the middle of eating, you can just finish the dinner, then unplug. You can even eat dinner at a place without a charger if you like their food better. It's a free country. Yes, driving like that won't win you the race, but a real road trip is about enjoying oneself, not winning the race - if the goal is simply to get from Seattle to Boston as fast as possible, fly on an airplane.
@Josh-179Ай бұрын
@ab-tf5fl , you missed what my point was. Most people are saying they don't want an EV because they think they take way longer to charge than they do and that they get less range than they do. I'm saying that your human needs will need or want more breaks than the car will. These races just goes to show that if you choose to make great time rather than enjoying the trip, you still can with an EV. Just don't expect time for a sit down dinner.
@Valencia_MediaАй бұрын
You're proving his point...@@ab-tf5fl
@mtnman1984Ай бұрын
@@Josh-179yes and no. The stops optimized for charge curves are short and numerous. Not too much longer than a fuel stop, but also not getting the range of a fuel stop where you throw a whole tank in. The charge stops where they are going into the top of the battery are plenty long enough for a sit down meal. This is why the Acura is off the map. There is still a wide gap in the speed at which one can do a cannonball style road trip in an ICE car vs a BEV. Completely viable, not a nightmare, but also not yet on par.

What happened with the Mercedes ticket we want more details
@buddy1155Ай бұрын
I think they said it was a warning.
@jazzsam84Ай бұрын
The ticket looked like it said something about a part malfunction? I don’t actually think it was speeding.

They got off with a warning for doing 5mph over. Sounds like a bored cop at midnight

Feel a weird sense of pride as an Ioniq 6 owner watching it keep pace with way more expensive EVs

You guys are killing the game. Cannot overstate how important this is for people wondering about how EV's are progressing.

Have been a dedicated ev household for 3 yrs and done many extended road trips. However, currently have a suburban rental while the rivian is in service and I kinda forgot/miss the convenience of a quick fuel stop on long road trips and without the hassle of pre planning ev stops.

I would just like to make a comment that in Billings Montana charger one and charger four for electrify America are power shared So had the lucid air move to either two or three then they probably would have pulled a whole lot more power because with the Taycan pull and the lucid, the power cabinet was pegged
