Chinese state subsidizes its EV companies from enormous budget surplus China has and basically dumps EVs on European market killing the competition with bellow cost pricing - their car producers lose money on their cars but Chinese State covers those loses. China also still has "underdeveloped country" status and therefore receives financial support from the USA. And you can not own more than 49% of "your" own company if you want to open factory in China. Those only few issues with so called free markets. Next,it'll take Chinese companies decades to create decent dealership network and for their cars to have decent resale value but most people driving those cars never ownes them so don't care about those issues,second-hand buyers do and it shows. EVs are Ponzi scheme.

There is a reason the Xiaomi SU7 is selling 4x the number of the IM L6 per month. It's a much more "conservative", yet advanced and well thought after car than the IM. Kyle is sort of getting it: the Chinese _consumers_ are not unlike their average American counterparts, who care less about software gimmicks than space, comfort and driving dynamics. It's the manufacturers that are being overtly pushy with the "tech features" (thank you, Elon) in order to impress, and with the enormous success of the SU7 sinking in, are just beginning to realize the demand on the ground and dialing all the gimmicks down a bit.
@rogerstarkey5390Ай бұрын
Couldn't resist the Tesla dig? Which "Tech features" do you have a problem with that are on the Tesla but not the Xiaomi? (and before you go "there" I'm on my second Xiaomi phone so the usual "get out" won't work)
@theolich4384Ай бұрын
@rogerstarkey5390 Nothing personal mate. But the yoke and the overall "do away with physical controls" idea are definitely Tesla-inspired. Then some of these Chinese automakers told themselves that hey, why don't we double down and beat Tesla in its own game - like getting rid of door handles altogether and throwing absolutely everything behind just the screen and voice control. The Xiaomi on the other hand appeared to have taken their time, thanks to their late entry into the EV scene, to observe and figure out what average, not the tech lovers, but average, usually ICE-stuck Chinese consumers do and do not want in an EV. You don't see any of the aforementioned quirks in the SU7 - heck, even the glove box actually has a handle. I assume you are aware of the optional underscreen gadget that can give you several extra buttons and a knob, which IMO is the perfect example of the direction they're going. Yet the vehicle is still fully software defined (they've just released a major OTA addressing the infamous "brake issue", or lack of regen when the ABS is active on the track) with everything properly connected by a LLM-empowered voice command. I see more automakers will eventually reach a middle ground. Ergonomics (for the mortals) and smart features don't necessarily have to be at odds when it comes to an EV.

Most popular Chinese EV brands have a goal to sell worldwide so they run crash test that meet China, US and EU standards. In every crash test that I've seen (there were many), they always exceed the score of comparable class of Japanese brands. If Americans and Europeans can trust Japanese cars, the new Chinese EVs will only be better in their class. There are social media clips of real collision between those EV sedan vs small truck (the sedan wins), or between mini-car EV vs Mercedes GLC (the mini-car wins). I'm aware of the older image of "made in China" still prevail, inside and outside of China, and I'm happy to see a new class of Chinese enterpreneurs who are willing to sacrifice short term profit for long term reputation. I imagine every developing society goes thru those stages...... and now we're at a stage of turning "made in China" up to the same level as "made in Germany". I'm skipping "made in Japan" because every month or so we learn about yet another Japanese brand being exposed for faking their data, and they've been faking it for 40 years..... So Japanese quality might have been an illusion all these times. The German carmakers might have lied about emission data, but they didn't lie about other aspects (so far, to the public awareness).

One major drawback with the new solid-state batteries, is the swelling of the battery during charging and, ultimately the degradation of the cell after extensive recharging, lithium is a very toxic metal for the environment, not many countries want to mine it, 98% of lithium is not recycled and goes in to land dumps, the huge amount of lithium used to make just one lithium car is not sustainable for all cars, it takes 1000 gallons of clean water turned toxic just to mine or build one lithium car, this is just lithium and not including cobalt which is another of many other real toxic metals causing air pollution when mined (horrible) better solution, hydrogen fuel cell future, the way fuel cell catalysts and membranes , there anode and cathodes are becoming so efficient that one day a tank the size of a large coke bottle full of cheap green hydrogen will take your car 1000 miles, this is coming and new home solar cells that make hydrogen coming to market , they will run homes and cars at cheap cost effective prices, why because solar cells have become much more cost efficient in making green hydrogen and better storage in long run, getting bang for buck from solar cells than having battery storage or just plan electricity, fuel cells will always have 10 times more power than any other lithium battery or solide state battery, fuel cell are proven and solide state or lithium will loose in the end when it comes to raw power , fuel cells are becoming truly remarkable engines for all transportation ect, hydrogen fuel cell refueling tanks for cars are made with really strong carbon fiber 5 times stronger than steel, tested for super safe high impact, making it safer than combustion engines or for that matter a lithium cars, plus amazing secret about hydrogen fuel cell cars is that each car actually cleans the air as it runs due to it`s clean watered electrolysis when released onto the atmosphere, after all lithium EV batteries cars most are still connected to oil and coal grids, any way you look at them they still are not eco friendy enough!

Let's say, if you are Ford, you come to China and want to establish a new factory here focusing on manufacturing EVs, the government then will offer you a land with low rent, plus low taxes required and low interest of loan. And here comes the fun part, nowadays in China's market, the main subsidy is not to the manufacturers, but to the consumers. Anyone who wants to buy EV/Hybrid of any brand, Chinese or non-Chinese, in China would get certain discount, and that comes from the government directly, not the brands. Combining all that, it is the so-called "Chinese government's subsidizing their EVs". :) Also I would like to point out, this process that the Chinese manufacturers are experiencing, happened on Korean, Japanese, Americans and Germans back in time, it is nothing new. Some of these Chinese brands will survive and even thrive, some will not and possibly get acquisition. Besides, either can survive or not is not my point, my point is he mentioned he wants to visit China to see what's happening there, so I listed him those brands, which represent the newest technologies that Chinese are having, these brands I mentioned, they are actually beating the shite out of the Germans and Japanese here.

At $42k this car is a bargain! But with Trump's tariffs looming in the background, we will never see any Chinese cars here. One thing is sure: if they were available in our market, they would kill off most American car companies with features and prices. I suspect there will come a point where even Tesla in China will not be able to compete with the wide range of options and improvements offered at affordable prices by Chinese manufacturers. It won't be long before we see many of these cars overwhelming European and US cars on the international market. Here in the US, hybrids will be the norm for a while, with Tesla profiting handsomely from Elon's investment in the Trump campaign. In the EV sphere, unless something changes, the US will be an also-ran. The Chinese approach to offering cars with so many great features as standard, with few extras, is what makes their cars so attractive. China has taken the lead as the world's premier car manufacturer.

Someone commented that China is at least 10 years ahead in EV technology, and I fully agree-especially when it comes to battery tech and pricing. They’ve undeniably set the standard there. But here’s the thing: the design. Oh, the design. I just can’t, for the life of me, find a good-looking Chinese EV. And to be clear, I don’t think Teslas are the pinnacle of automotive beauty either. Yet, when you look at the US and EU, you can find plenty of attractive EVs. Take Polestar, for example-clean, modern designs. Porsche? Obviously, the Taycan and Macan are some of the best-looking EVs on the market. BMW? Sure, they’ve made some questionable design choices with their EV SUVs, but the i3, i4, and i5 are solid. Mercedes has a mix-some of their EV sedans miss the mark, but their SUVs can be quite sleek. Audi consistently delivers beautiful EVs. Even brands like Peugeot, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and VW-while they lag in battery and drivetrain tech-still manage to put out cars that are easy on the eyes. China, though? Their designs feel like a missed opportunity. Even the Xiaomi SU7, which has become a fan favorite, looks like a poorly reimagined Taycan. It’s as if they’re so focused on the tech (which they’ve nailed) that they’ve completely overlooked aesthetics. It reminds me of newer Disney movies: visually stunning with massive budgets, but somehow the script still falls flat. With all that talent, technology, and resources, how is there not one Chinese EV that truly stands out in terms of design?

One of the interesting aspects of the Chinese versus the US market is the technology available. I think rear steer is exceptionally beneficial especially in urban settings and for Europe where these will hit the market sooner but it helps with parking and handling while feeling more secure. Unfortunately it really is just that cheap when it comes to electric motors. To make your gas engine even 50% more powerful you'd have to put an entirely new and bigger engine in, with all sorts of packaging, cooling, and other mechanical issues to solve. To make you EV motor 200% more powerful, you just need to bolt in a slightly larger motor that costs like 15% more or something. Making any EV you want into a drag strip monster with 300, 400, or more hp, is basically a trivial engineering task these days.
