7 Heroes Who Lived Long Enough to Become Villains: Commenter Edition

Heroes have all the good karma but villains have all the fun, which is presumably why so many game heroes switch sides for the sequel. This is more widespread than we even imagined, judging by the quantity of comments on our last video on the issue. Direct your attention to these seven heroes who lived long enough to become the villain and subscribe to Outside Xbox for a video like this every Thursday.
Take Prince Arthas Menethil circa Warcraft 3, whose goal as a paladin was to stop a plague of undeath from infesting the kingdom - something at which he failed pretty spectacularly by using the cursed sword Frostmourne.
Said sword turned Prince Arthas into a Death Knight of the Scourge, and lead to him destroying Lordaeron, as well as much of the surrounding area.
Arthas then merged with the Lich King, killed his Dad King, and began a reign of terror that ended only when your heroic player character from World of Warcraft voyaged to his base in Northrend to defeat him.
There's a lesson in there about not wielding cursed runeblades nicked from Lich Kings, we reckon.

Actual story about Red from Pokemon: His wrists suffered damage after being frozen when he was defeated by the Elite 4. He didn't actually beat the Elite 4, they sabotaged his fight with Bruno and Lorelei froze him. The reason he was in Mount Silver was to soak in the hotsprings there which supposedly could heal his injuries. Not really a villain.

Probably not as well known, but Armored Core 4 and 4A: The final boss of the first game Joshua O'Brian "White Glint" winds up betraying you and you have to fight him in a giant radiation spewing robot resulting in the collapse of your home nation. Then in the second game you find out that the new "White Glint" is your character from the previous game who has taken on the title and works to atone for the events of the first game... You then kill them and the game gives you the option of becoming "The greatest monster mankind has ever known." So it's like a triple flip...

As he came back in MGS4 and died there at the grave of his mentor the Boss. Though Venom Snake did indeed die during Metal Gear 1.

None of them became villains though, Talion became a Nazgul in order to continue fighting against Sauron and protecting the Realms of Men and Celebrimbor left Talion in order to defeat Sauron.

Ethan Ruigrok I agree with you on Talion, but Celebrimbor definitely did not betrayed him with good intentions. Celebrimbor intention was to defeat Sauron by dominating him, so he could replace Sauron and rule Middle-Earth for himself. Talion refused to, in his own words, "trade one Dark Lord for another", so Celebrimbor left him to die.

On mortal Kombat, what about raiden? He spends a whole game(i can't remember which one) trying to fight fate, after a vision shows him he will inevitably become corrupted by power and destroy his friends. Why doesn't that get a mention? Given he is outright told by a spiritual source that he will live long enough to become the villain.

I don't think you can count Red as a villain. He was just bored. In the story, he had literally never lost a Pokémon battle until Gold came along. So, what do you do when you catch every Pokémon and become the strongest person in the world, knowing that your life has peaked at a mere eleven years old? You disappear without a trace, create a legend, and wait until someone who can actually give you a challenge comes along

Well I know what happened to Mercer between 1 and 2. Like dealing with a few African Warlords and when he got back into I think it was Canada, because the father of the daughter he ended up being super crooked and when he was going to bail and went to get his money, it's gone, his soon to be ex, shoots him in the face with a shotgun and said "daddy always taught me better" or something like that and then gets that "people suck" which I am sure he missed the memo on that one. Then leads into Prototype 2. Plus the child from Hope, Idaho was code named "Pariah". That is unless they happen to rewrite it or whatever.

I think you're ignoring the bigger hero becomes villain in the form of Raiden from Mortal Kombat. The guy forces the tournament to restart, but it's Earthrealm attacking and taking over Outworld. Which I don't think anyone ran past the Earthrealm heroes either, except maybe Scorpion, who seems okay with this.

Actually Arthas Menethil and Alex Mercer had the same point of view. Arthas is not just a vilain zombifiez controlled by the helmet and the blade posessed by Ner'Zul. He convinced himself, that undeath was the solution, with no disease, no famine, so no more conflicts.

I think we can safely say the reason that Alex Mercer never made it on the first list was pretty simple - he was never a hero to begin with. Now, one that I'm surprised is not on the list is a super hero-themed game that came out at the same time (and was considerably better), inFamous. Spoilers below: Cole was up against a seemingly evil organization run by a man known as "Kessler". However, by the end of the game, we realize that Kessler is not his real name. His real name? Cole McGrath. Kessler is Cole from a failed future in where a powerful conduit known simply as "The Beast" killed everyone he knew and loved. In order to prevent this from happening, he was able to use some of his more advanced abilities to literally push himself backwards in time to prepare Cole early in a chance to fight and defeat The Beast ahead of time. So, yes... the villain of inFamous is the player character who literally becomes a villain to get the player character ready to fight an even more powerful villain. Told you inFamous was a better game =p
