When I heard “Embarrassing Game Overs”, I thought there’d definitely be a Dark Souls entry. I’m specifically thinking of the original one, when you land on Firelink Shrine. The first NPC you meet is the Crestfallen Warrior, who tells you where to go and what to do. Unless you attack him. Then he goes batsh*t and starts attacking you. At that level, you probably haven’t got a chance, so you’ll probably die, to which he says “How embarrassing. You actually let me do that to you?” in the most smug voice imaginable. When you respawn... He’s right there, still batsh*t. And he’ll continue to be until you either kill him or run away. And if you kill him, he doesn’t respawn. Ever. I personally made this more humiliating, because I had bait him to the edge of a cliff, then fall off. At least he followed me. Now I’ve got 20+ deaths, no idea where to go, and humiliated for the rest of my life.

The "best" part about that whole ending is that the Narrator is pleading for Stanley to listen to reason, and the fall isn't even enough to kill Stanley; he has to jump off the ledge three separate times!
@ninjapanda4546 жыл бұрын
Dat-Mudkip the fall I was talking about was from the moving platform. Theres no railing to prevent you from jumping off the first time you get on it so most people think huh i wonder if I can jump off this, they then walk off the edge half expecting there to be an invisible wall to stop you. The one you talking about if funny to, it's just that this one is one that you could completely miss, the only ones that get this game over are the ones that get this game over are the player that look at a two story drop of instant death and wonder "will I die if I jump off" and then jump

@lordnul17085 жыл бұрын
@@DocRobotnik that's literally what "put it together and brought it to life" means. Miyazaki both wrote and directed it MAKING him the creator, but as you said it's the artist, voice actors and most importantly programmers that put the whole thing together and breathe life into it. Direct comparison: Dungeons & Dragons, especially the "default" setting of The Forgotten Realms a setting that makes BotW, Elder Scrolls and all of Soulsborne combined look like a half meter diameter kiddie pool by comparison). Gary Gygax created it (and later brought others into the creative fold to add to an already existing world), but it was the additional creative talents as well as the players that gave it life and Another direct comparison: Star Wars. George Lucas created it, the cast and crew brought it to life and pulled it all together. Across all forms of media, it's the same principle. If the writer and director are the same person, they're the creator no ifs ands or buts. The illustrators give visual representation, actors have the duty of portrayal OF the characters and lastly programmers to make sure everything works. And one more, William Shakespeare wrote and directed his plays, but the actors, costume designers and prop makers brought it to life.
@Bombom13005 жыл бұрын
@@lordnul1708 I initially had the same reaction as DocRobotnik up there. I think it was your use of the word "simply" that confused me. All those other artists and contributors's work was certainly not simple! Their work combined is far more than that of the director and/or writer. It seemed like you were brushing off their work offhandedly, although you have now clarified that in your new comment. On the other hand, and this may be semantics, but to bring something to life is certainly to help create it. I would say that anyone who helped shape a project, from an artist or a voice actor to the director, etc, has helped to create it. Creation isn't just done by the person who has the first idea or the general idea, but by everyone who forms a work. I wouldn't call George Lucas the sole creator of Star Wars. The progenitor, sure. The director, objectively yes. But saying the person who started an idea or guided it in broad strokes is the only creator devalues the work of everyone else who helped make those films come to life. An illustrator doesn't just give something a visual representation, they create that representation. A different illustrator would have created a different image, even under the same writer/director. Therefore, they are participating in the creation process rather than simply translating one creator's idea into visuals. If they simply bring it to life, without creating it, then you would get the same result each time, as only one mind, that of the director/writer, would be doing the creating. Similarly, an actor doesn't just portray a character, they truly give it form and life. If Luke Skywalker had been played by Dany DeVito, Luke would have been a very different character. (And Star Wars as a whole would be a very different, albeit certainly still intriguing, film.) Your examples of Shakespeare and Gygax are interesting parallels, as both created initial works, which have been reinterpreted and adjusted and recreated by thousands of other players (both of the theater and game variety). I think all those players have each created their own version of the stories, and thus could be considered creators in their own right. No two D&D sessions are the same, just as two different productions of "As You Like It" are going to be wildly different. I suppose what I'm saying is: you are right that all the other members of these projects are, "putting it together and bringing it to life," but in doing so, they are shaping the final product and thus contributing to the creation of the work. TL,DR: I think it undervalues the work of artists, voice actors, designers, and everyone who participates in the creation of any form of media to say that the process of putting together an idea and bringing it to life is anything other than helping to create that final game/film/play/etc. I hope this hasn't come across as hostile. Your comments posed an interesting point about the definition of "creation," and it was fun to try to think about what the precise definition is! Thanks for that, and have a great day!
@lordnul17085 жыл бұрын
@@Bombom1300 this. This is an interesting argument on your part, and not to worry as it doesn't at all come off as hostle. That said, I think it's safe to say we can sort this under a philosophical difference at this point. That said I put that whole bit under a sort of scale regarding whether it was broad strokes or more involved instruction (George Lucas falling well into the latter category if the interviews are anything to go by) or how much detail comes from the artist and how much is from the writer/director. (That said, on a different note the best way for philosophers to improve their craft is to converse about their differring views much like we are here). That said creating a world and bringing it to life can indeed be separate events (heck just look at our own) but then again it all depends on perspective, and definitely depends on the context of the whole process. On a different note, here's a few random fun facts, 1) did you know that for Empire Strikes Back, Lucas actually kept the "Luke I am your father" line from practically everyone and toldark Hamil immediately before shooting the iconic scene? Yeah Mark's reaction really was genuine. Also George threatened Mark by saying something along the lines of "Only I know, the producer knows and now you know, and if you tell anyone we'll know who it was" so by the first screening, the number of people who knew could be counted on one hand. 2) The first superhero didn't come from a comic, but a radio program. The Shadow was the first of his kind and would later go on to inspire characters we know and love today such as Batman (both IRL and partially in universe), Darkwing Duck and so forth. A short while after came his debut "pulp novels" (then a precursor to the comic book) and the rest from there is history. 3) originally the very first Zelda game was going to be...a lot different, the game would start in a tech heavy future and time travel would be a thing, Triforce pieces were going to be supercomputer chips etc. 4) if you play close enough attention, no matter how different two RPGs are, they can all be tracked to the same original inspiration, the very first role-playing game, that we know as Dungeons & Dragons, in some way shape or form. From in your face cases like fireball and lightning bolt to the way damage types are handled to monster design and much much more, it can be fun seeing what thing inspired what.

The dumbest move to cause a Game Over in Dishonored is at the very first area, Dunwall Tower (prior to meeting with the queen and witnessing her assassination). As you scout around the area and notice High Overseer Campbell having his portrait painted, you will trigger a Game Over with the phrase, "You committed a capital offense," if you walk from Campbell to (and over) the area immediately to the painter's right side (possibly where he keeps his canvases). Upon doing this action, a piano sound will occur, Campbell will start to talk, blood drops will appear near the lower right side of the screen, and the Game Over Message will appear.

You forgot about romancing Morinth in Mass Effect 2. It gets said multiple times that she kills people whenever she melds minds with them. Yet you still have the choice of trying to romance her and if you do it'll kill you and show a death screen.

Which is weird, because it's basically impossible to make a nuke detonate by accident, aside from sitting on the nuke button or something. (Nuclear science is _hard,_ okay?)

Timothy McLean Yeah according to the world of Hitman, you can set off a nuclear chain reaction just from a bullet or two

How about a list of terrible decisions you made that seemed smart at the time in games?

What about in Fallout New Vegas' dead money, where everything tells you not to read Fredrick Sinclair's message to Dean? If you do it you get trapped in the Sierra Madre Vault forever.

Attacking sheogorath in oblivion. I don't think anyone expects it to go *well*, but getting instantly sent to hundreds of feet above ground and falling to your scripted death wasn't expected either.
