Finally, a video that shares my unpopular ideas. I've been telling all my friends the past year that boredom is good for you and is the only way for ourselves and our society to progress. And I've found that so many people refuse to accept that fact, because it so so easy to constantly stimulate ourselves. I wrote a NyTimes article about harnessing boredom during quarantine a few years back and wrote about the exact same study you mentioned here. Amazing video, I wish everyone would see this and implement boredom in their lives. If we cannot discover and access our true inner capabilities, we are nothing.

It's absolutely true, though. I've came to the same conclusion while working as a security guard. As long as I had the laptop with me, I would watch movies, play videogames, surf the forums and so on. If I forgot my laptop, I would devour books instead. Like a 500 pages book in a single shift. If I forgot to take both, I would sort all the papers (weren't even my responsiblity) and clean the whole premises. However, when it comes to such basic tasks and simple manual labor, I prefer using audiobooks at the same time. I'm probably not achieving the optimal working or reading (or listening in this case) comprehension, but I prefer it whenever it is actually possible.

yep. boredom really works. usually i have a huge distraction problem, there are days when i am plugged in listening music or watching videos for the entirety of the day, even during the working hours. But on some days when i choose to spend at least 1-2 hours without listening to music in the background or watching videos then the work becomes super easy to do, to the point where turning on the music feels wrong and only distracts me from my work or studies, so i can turn it off no problem. Its like there is a 2 hour buffer zone of boredom that separates my mind from the 'distracted' state and 'focused' state

I find that not all music is equally bad for productivity. Music with lyrics generally is. But ambient easy-to-listen is more like a humm in the background that appears to have some harmony in it. I found myself very engaged with coding when i turned on witcher 3 ost. But the task itslef was also very engaging and i felt myself VERY fulfilled when i finished it. So it really depends.

I don't even touch my phone as a vehicle technician. I just pump out oil changes, tire rotations and services and most of the time I do it as autopilot not even thinking about any distractions. Not sure about outwork but it helps you efficiently complete tasks. Although I'm productive, that boring state can sometimes affect you mentally such as make you feel like you have nothing going on for you; you aren't able to use your creative juices to help you think and get excited about doing anything. There are definitely its pros and cons but I think everything just needs balance and you will no doubt have peace of mind and succeed in whatever you're doing.

In my opinion, the idea of "outworking everyone" and being successful is amplified by social media. 95% of the content in social media preaches that you must get productive, or you'll be mediocre. Perhaps we'll have to use the boredom first to eradicate the subconscious guilt we feel when not working and THEN work on what we want.
@sefrautiq
@sefrautiq Жыл бұрын
Yeah, don't really want to outwork everyone, maybe I'd like to compete a bit at most. But overall, all I want is just to have enough financial stability that eradicates my anxiety about paying rent, buying food, affording healthcare and entertainment. If that clause is satisfied then I could happily pursuit the things that I have passion to and socialize. For me it would be perfect. P.S. YT does have quite awful notification system, so I'll probably miss a reply cause I disabled them

This is seriously splendid. People don't appreciate the value of rest and focusing on the self - peace, boredom, sleep, contemplation, meditation - all are elements of the mind that have vital purposes to force us to generate new events and new stimuli. Understanding and experiencing them will help us learn when there is bad emptiness, and when there is good emptiness, and what to do about each. I hated the lockdowns, but I began growing my own food, cooking more, exercising and learning the value of living on my own schedule, and that was entirely out of that aforementioned boredom. Not only that, but understanding the issues of such an empty state has given me a sense of purpose as to what I want to do with my life.

It never makes me more infuriated than to be asked or complained about something unimportant while I'm in a flow. My mother is always in a bad mood because of menopause, and never respects my boundary, and constantly asks me about what to cook for dinner or to do the dishes. I know I'm such a dependent asshole for even thinking that this bothers me, but I can't stand but to be angry because it is so hard for me to get into the state of flow, and my day is basically ruined from the point I interacted with her. I have a curated list of music that I listen to in order to get into the flow, but when she angrily bursts into my room, the music that I'm hearing basically becomes useless from that day on because it brings back an angry mood. I know I have to be more independent and rent my own room where I'm distraction free, but I don't feel like I can with her preventing me from doing what I excel. I tried explaining this to her multiple times, but she never seems to understand the concept of flow as she claims that she never experienced anything like this in her life, and makes fun of me that I look like I'm having a man period.

I would really love to explore the path to mental peace while living in a chaotic environment because that only is the true and real meaning of being in a state of flow. It is childish to demand "perfect peace" in the surroundings in order to meditate, focus or be in a state of flow because mastery in the environment is the real way to finding the flow.

@@anshra8576 I agree completely brother and appreciate your comment, yea as time grew I had my own peace, sometimes can't escape some annoying stuff but usually Im in my own room vibin myself, im 19 now so people don't bother me as much, but I can't imagine how annoying a baby child would be lol, i only see flow useful in activities and not a default state of mind because to flow u need to focus on one thing and if u are free ajd doing nothing theres too much to think about to it contradicts flow, because if u wanna deafen out all your surroundings to reach this so called zone its impossible, flow is natural not forced and can be maximized with specfic activities, so in your case that's tough to be in a chaotic environment, And Music and headphones would help alot although if the surrounding family members aren't too annoying hanging out can be okay time to time, getting titled about little things is easy if u isolate yourself and hold negative feelings towards people but if u don't isolate as much its more tolerable, Goodluck for your future, chaos eventually levels down if u can be independent for yourself

Thank you for this video. I can relate to a few of your points. Boredom was the main thing that caused me to ruin my life. Doing drugs, wasting time playing games, fapping... all of those behavior's can be tied down to one thing: boredom. My justification was, "But I'm so bored!". I thought boredom didn't lead to anything useful. But apparently, after watching your video, I have learnt that being bored is a prerequisite of being productive. Attention residue is a real thing. That is why I don't like reading on my phone. I never knew how to explain it but I just liked reading physical books because it allows me to stay focused. i noticed this in school, we would be watching a video in class attentively, but when we went home and were asked to watch a video, i would find myself distracted by other stuff and not the video.

Repitition in a job you hate can be boring feeling like mediocrity but having vision of your full potential while taking the baby steps to reach that goal is something to look foward to.

Whenever I'd start to work on homework or something I didn't want to do, I'd feel a strong sense of pain inside me. When I had been working on something I didn't want to work on for a long time I started to feel lonely and sad. It didn't get easier, but I got better at it, and now I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I can get through a period and look back on all the things I did that I never thought I could pull off becasue of my avoidance of those negative feelings.

What I learned made a video about this, his video was about why less restraint is how you overcome bad habits/procrastination. Instead of using all your restraint to avoid doing something, just put that thing in a place very difficult to reach.

In other words, if your life sucks, make it suck even worse. Then the original suckiness won't suck as bad as it first seemed, relatively speaking. Guys a genius.

Was in a hospital for a month and found myself drawing/writing again. Yeah, the tricky part is setting up an environment to induce boredom without cutting off modern necessities.

Extroverts: I'm afraid of boredom who can sit by themselves and do absolutely nothing? Introverts: Oh, you think boredom is your ally. But you merely adopted the boredom; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

from my understanding Cal Newport promotes unitasking and avoiding multitasking no matter what. for ex: playing game but putting your phone away and not looking at it during the download or loading screen no matter is the key to this ultimate technique.

I think people don’t even do enough in their daily lives to enjoy being bored and getting a chance to have random creative thoughts where you get to think about things you want to do.

I don't do boredom. I store problems in my mind to work on when I sit quietly. I am one of the most productive employees in my workplace. I believe it's because I mentally catalog problems as I encounter them.

I once heard a basketball athlete would stare at the wall for 30 minutes and after that he had much more concentration and enjoyment in his shooting training, allowing him to shoot at high efficiency. He explained that watching the wall was so boring that just doing intense training became enjoyable.
