Just found this "over 50 and learning to fly" channel. I'm 69 and just passed my Knowledge exam and high on life for the moment. I'm pretty close to completing my Checkride but still need a SOLO cross country and a few more SOLO hours. Flying had been one of the best experiences of my life. I've already flown several planes with this configuration (obviously with CFIs) including "steam gauges" (vacuum activated gyroscopic gauges). Obviously prefer the electronic (glass). Don't worry guys, my girlfriend will keep me in good shape for flying (passed my medical). I'm just sorry I didn't pass my private pilot in time to fly my girlfriend and myself to the Lynrd Skynrd ZZ Top concert next month. Keep on Flying. Boomer generation Rocks!

Awesome!!!!! Now go get tour pilots certificate!!!!

@@Over50andLearningToFly Re: "Tour pilot certificate"? Don't really know what that is but I plan on getting Instrument training for safety after my Private Pilot Qualifications. Given my "late start" Commercial Pilot services is probably not attainable for me, I hope that I can provide some free service flying at some point beyond splitting fuel expense with trip with a friend, but I'm aware of the strict "no payment for services rule". I've probably only got a few years left in the tank for funds and health (nothing wrong yet) but each lesson takes me closer to the skyway!

Good one Ted. There's no going back now - glass is awesome! Commenced my IR training today - 5 weeks full-time, so lots of work ahead. Cheers, Jim.

Ted I have been waiting for this video now for a few weeks. Looking good! Love the new panel and super excited to see you flying her again. Lastly love the "full rips" on your takeoff. I'm glad I'm not the only one messing up names during my checklist. Thanks for sharing your journey with us :)

Thanks - Much more to come- I just need to play around with better camera angles to get a good shot of the G5's!

It's really obvious how much you are loving the G5's- happy for you. I know what you mean about transitioning to glass- it is different but Once you get used to it, it is SOOOO much nicer and easier to assimilate the data that the instruments are sending you. The traditional "instrument scan" changes to more of an instrument sweep since everything you need is coming from two instruments instead of 6! I was an early adopter of the Garmin G1000 equipped C182's and trained many people to fly them. My Twin Comanche N8583Y is in the avionics shop right now getting new avionics to include the dual G5's... I can't wait. That is going to be so nice. Thank you for going to the trouble to share your experience!

I did all of my private training in steam gauge airplanes. I'm now working on my instrument rating in a G1000 172. The EFIS is so much easier in every way. Along with the instrument training itself, the glass panels have made me a much more precise pilot. You can almost put the attitude indicator on a single pixel to balance the airplane on the head of a pin. The tapes are so sensitive that you can immediately see when you're deviating from airspeed or altitude. If I ever buy an airplane, it will likely be an old steam gauge. The first upgrade I'd want to do would be the G5s if there isn't already a WAAS GPS in the panel.

Awesome video, glad you are enjoying the glass. I am a 50+ sport student just prepping for my solo cross country. Really enjoying your channel. Thanks for the vids!

So having transitioned to glass 2 years ago, don't sweat the urge to look at the old altimeter and airspeed instruments. It goes away after a while, then you get into the mode of "hey, lets verify the altitude with the steam gauge". What I didn't do is remove the old steam gauges. I really don't understand the pilots that went glass and then left blank panel around it. I have the pitot/static instruments on bottom row, and the old AI and DG to the right. Love that busy panel, and love the combination of old and new.

Very nice. I’ve been waiting for a Trutrak Auto Pilot since JANUARY , because unfortunately Bendix King bought them up and they can’t seem to deliver it to my avionics shop, who is waiting for 8 of them! So, considering putting in a Garmin GFC 500 with dual G5’s. I didn’t realize you were in the DC area..I fly into Gaithersburg (Montgomery Park Airport ) all the time to visit my daughter..I’m out of WBW, but not for long. Headed to SC end of year and will be based out of KCEU (Clemson airport)...Anyway, great video..I also learned to fly about 6 years ago (in my 50s , Im 58 now ). Purchased my cherokee about 6 hours into my private. Getting your license and taking your checkride in y9ur own airplane is amazing and really the only way to do it to make the journey all worth it. Been Instrument rated for 3 years (best thing I ever did ) and working on Commercial and CFI at 58 years old !1

Good idea covering the steam gauges. I have the same issue, that is not focusing on the analog and ignoring the G5s. Not easy at first. Nice video.

Use the Verticle Velocity Indicator to help you level off. Also with digital guages... don't sweat 20 or 30 ft. Good stuff! Congrats on the new glass!

I just did an IPC in a plane a few months ago that had a G5, and you just made me realize I still looked at the altimeter the whole time for altitude, never even used the G5 for altitude. As far as sensitivity, it seems like that altitude is like a digital tach, which drives me crazy. Trying to nail that RMP but it's so sensitive you just have to make peace you aren't going to have it exact. Never thought about the same thing with altitude on the G5, especially since I never thought to use it since I had the altimeter. lol.

That is really cool. I'm looking forward to more videos. I'm in the process of installing a new interior in my Mooney and it is taking a lot longer than expected - which I kind of expected. I hope to be back to flying in three weeks or so.

Hi, how do you like your visors? Where did you get them and do you mind they don’t swing to shade you from the side? Are they better than Rosen style? Love your channel, thanks
@Over50andLearningToFly3 жыл бұрын
Well my visors are embarrassing actually because they are just the plastic piece that I found on eBay for $50 and I took the old visors out and mounted the new plastic pieces on the insert bar from the old visors and yes it was very cheap but it was much needed until I can get around and buy proper Rose and visors for the airplane. The next thing that needs to go on that airplane our seatbelts. Thanks for watching!

Garmin GFC500 Autopilot is next? Naturally with the Garmin GPS so you can use destination mode with multiple way points. After all....it's only money. But just think of how easy it will make those cross country trips, and those IFR flights in the future.

student pilot here with a lot to learn. How come you took off with 10% flaps?

Read the POH FOR A Cessna, the flaps give you extra lift at slower speed at a certain point.
