Zuko DID beat Azula. Zuko had an answer for everything Azula threw at him. She was beginning to panic, normally she's in his head - but this time Zuko was baiting her. By the mere action of switching to cheat - pressuring Zuko into protecting a non-combatant - she admitted she couldn't beat Zuko straight-up. Not anymore. She truly believed Zuko was going to redirect her lightning back at her, something she's never been able to nor ever needed to do. The perfect response, taking all of her hardwork, rage & discipline & quite literally firing it back at her. Zuko had beaten Azula. Azula would rather cheat than fail.
@_Stormfather Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad someone else finally said this. I would also add to that: Aang DID beat Ozai without the Avatar state. Twice in fact. The first time was when he redirected the lightning. He could have sent it back at Ozai and ended it right there. The second time was when he used Seismic Sense, just outright clowning on Ozai, surprising him just like Overanalyzing Avatar asked for. Then you could argue he beat Ozai a third time, this time spiritually instead of physically. Sure, the Lion Turtle gave him energybending, but it was still on Aang to be strong enough to win with it. He almost lost, but in the end his spirit was stronger than Ozai's. The lion turtle just provided him the tool he needed, it didn't do the job for him.

Aang using Toph’s bending style while in the avatar state is actually a really super cool worldbuilding moment. It shows the reason the avatar spirit reincarnates into a person every time instead of just being an immortal spirit. Being many different people from different backgrounds and meeting even more means that the avatar is able to learn so much more than they would by being the same individual for all eternity. From now on, the avatar in the avatar state will always be able to do that machinegun move he did in this episode, it reinforces the morals of the story of wisdom and learning from other people, especially people unlike you, and I think that’s so fricken cool.

Personally, I always LOVED the fact that Zuko didn't outright win the battle against his sister because he was saving Katara. He would have won. There is absolutely no doubts about that. He had the upper hand throughout the whole fight and the reason he lose is because his sister goes against her honour. She attacks someone else in a 1v1 fight. The most honourable and presticefilled way for a firebender...and she breaks the last bit of honour she ever had. Zuko won that match because she was forced into cheating and lose her honour basically saying "The only one of those siblings that lost their honour was the messed up little sister" I just find it great that Zuko nearly lost his battle thanks to the fact he had honour unlike his sister despite having been told he didnt have any honour his whole life.

The Swamp and The Guru were the best chances Avatar had to introduce Energy Bending without it being an asspull. In particular, it could be established that swamp people- which we only ever see waterbenders in- aren't actually genetic water benders but rather are given it by the energy of the swamp. By that same coin, it should be possible to remove it. The Guru could then imply similar things in regard to the avatar.
@runakovacs47592 жыл бұрын
Agreed on the Guru. The guru spoke about chakras and opening/closing and stuff. He could have mentioned how disrupted chakra flow could lead to issues with bending - at the time, talk about it using the emotional/lessons aspect. @marche8002 жыл бұрын
Something I had pointed out to me that I never noticed initially is that when Aang is being overwhelmed during the energy bending scene what allows him to stay pure and overcome ozai is that he manually activated the Avatar state. You can tell because his Tattoos start glowing. This does show that even with the Lion Turtle's handout at the end of the day if it wasn't for his personal growth he still would have lost. It's only in accepting his role as the Avatar and mastering himself through his chakra's that he was able to save the world AND stay true to himself. I only wish the animation conveyed this idea clearer.

I've also seen the idea that the thing that pushed Aang over the edge at the end was him realizing that he really was willing to effectively die to preserve his ideals. The whole conflict of the show started in part because Aang wasn't willing to compromise his ideals, but also wasn't willing to fight for them. He ran away, and the Fire Nation was able to take over. He might not have been able to really stop them, honestly, but he wasn't willing to try. Throughout the finale, Aang was repeatedly asking himself whether his convictions were worth killing for, and whether they were worth dying for, and at the end of that fight, he found his answer and drew strength from it.

In terms of energybending, I think it would've been interesting if the lion turtle (Maybe? I don't know how anyone can be on the side of that being a good moment. I think it's really interesting to have a character not loose in the traditional sense, but loose mentally. This was just not pulled off well
@the_tactician98589 ай бұрын
@@Maker0824I see what you mean, but I never had the feeling that it was rushed or poorly designed. Things moved fast, for sure, but there were plenty of hints in the show that even when she was calm she was not mentally doing well. She just was in control usually, being able to dictate events and using every bit of advantage given to her. The Beach shows this perhaps better than anything, as it dumps her in a situation where she can't control her environment. The end result? After feeling a bit better about things by listening to other people complaining about their lives, she goes to smash things up. There is an argument to be made for adding more scenes like it, maybe a line or 2 about how Zuko should shut up about her mother as it makes her uneasy, but honestly it doesn't add any missing context, it only highlights it. Things like her hair being a sign of how put-together she is, her allergic reactions to hearing about love and other emotions, her mentioning how she finds the holiday house 'depressing', indicating that the time spent there, away from the court as a family, didn't connect with her... they aren't big hints, but they are present. As for the breakdown itself, it is twofold. Azula counted on 2 things in life: her control over other people and her skills as a firebender. Arguably she sees the first one as her greatest strength, because even when outmatched you can win by targeting the weakest link. However, Ty Lee and Mai abandoned her at the prison, and Zuko ran off to join the Avatar. This demonstrated to her that their fear of her and her manipulations no longer controlled even her friends, let alone proper traitors. Then, the one person she has to respect in terms of rank and skill difference (assuming of course Ozai is more powerful than her, which is not demonstrated but still likely) relegates her role in the invasion to guarding the home front. When she calls him out for treating her like Zuko, she doesn't mean Ozai's treatment means that he hates her, because love or hate is barely a concept for her. It's the fact that he is manipulating her into a relegation role for the Final Victory that has her bothered. (Am I doing heavy story lifting here? Maybe, but nothing here hasn't been established before in the series). She is feeling betrayed, not just by her friends, but by everyone, including underlings. She feels things slipping from her fingers and it terrifies her. And it's in this stress that she actually breaks. She lost her mightiest weapon that she could always count on, and now she's no longer in a position to bargain or power her way to a better position. TL;DR: Her breakdown isn't perfect, but to say it was rushed or badly designed is not correct. Rather, if anything, the buildup was perhaps too subtle. But it could have been fixed by adding a few extra scenes to show her being more out of her depth. Maybe have someone disrespect her or be immune to manipulation, to show that anything out of her direct control frustrates her. But I'd leave the core of the final scenes alone.
@aikikaname65089 ай бұрын
@@the_tactician9858There were a few hints she was struggling, but there’s a big difference between struggling and suddenly hallucinating and frothing at the mouth. It doesn’t track, and if they wanted to make it believable they needed to write her differently in Zuko alone, instead of giving her a psychopaths back story complete with animal torture. As a small child she was so emotionally brutal that she was unfazed that her Grandad was going to have her own brother killed, enjoyed watching her own brother get tortured later on, was unfazed by their mother getting sent away in the memory. After all that, it’s disbelief breaking to think that her two friends - she’d only recently reconnected with after years and she treated mostly as tools - betraying her sent her into an insane spiral. It would absolutely insult her ego and make her angrier, but there’s no way it’d cause her to lose her grip on reality when everything else she took in stride. There’s no way. The only relationship in her life that conceivably could have caused that break down would have been the one with her father, whose approval seems to be the most important thing in her life. Him leaving her behind wasn’t big enough. They may have hinted in a few episodes and set it up, but it was in no way believable. If they wanted it to work, they really needed retcon or roll back her psychopathic childhood tendencies they gave her in Zuko Alone. Maybe an episode or two of her showing that she was terrified of losing her father’s approval, that she wasn’t a sadistic animal torturer, but they never did. The vulnerabilities in the beach episode wasn’t enough

Zuko's "where's my mother" scene to me is mostly a signal as to Zuko's journey not being fully done. The loss of his mother made him feel like there was no love in his life, and the early part of his journey is trying to replace that lost parental love by gaining it from his father instead. In the end, we watch him learn to love who he is, which opens the next part of his journey- that external love for him (his mother) exists as well, even if finding it isn't immediate or free.

That isn't the only option though. Aang had already mastered meditation and going to the spirit world. Imagine him taking Ozaï into that metaphysical place he went when guru Pathik trained him, giving Ozaï access to the ultimate power at the price of all his desires. And Ozaï taking the bait in his thirsts for power. Only to come out as the greatest firebender of all time, but in peace, realizing he have no longer any interest in pursuing power or conquest. It would have made one more paralel between Aang and him, the sacrifices they are ready to make or refuse to and an example of a non lethal way to deal with the big bad that was already established.

The Aang vs Ozai fight being one chasing the other is something i've always kinda liked. Aang for a lot of his problems, especially earlier in the show, would run away at first instead of dealing with them head on, and now his biggest fear, that being Ozai, is coming right at him. It makes sense how at first his response would be to run. Then when he goes into the Avatar state and chases after and kicks the shit outta Ozai feels satisfying because, Aang is running right at his biggest problem and isnt afraid to take him on.
@vrinkee2 жыл бұрын
I also think it's appropriate due to the whole concept of these two characters having "all the power in the world." That statement has weight because you see these shear forces of the elements and human nature absolutely crushing each other, and you also get to see Aang deliver on the concept of, "With great power comes great responsibility." He uses his power to protect and serve others, and thus shows mercy, while Ozai feels emboldened to do whatever he wants at the cost of other's suffering because of the power he holds. In the end, it serves as a good example of what power should be used for.

Agreed. Aang's entire thing is that he's a gentle pacifist that refuses to fight or be tough and runs away. Most of the episodes focused on his earth bending are him failing because earth is the core of fighting and it is opposite of air in terms of agility, so the air bender running away from the murderous firelord instead of standing his ground and fighting back makes sense. Then the avatar spirit kicks in and wants to kill Sozin, so obviously, now that Aang isn't being the agile Airbender, he gets a stance and fights. And I especially like that because he is so much of a pacifist, he, the 13 year old kid, can overpower the avatar spirit and all of his past lives because of his own beliefs in not killing. It's an amazing moment and I don't have a problem with it

I don't think it's supposed to be either or I think it's supposed to be both. It's not There's the avatar state, and there's aang. Kyoshi and Roku don't just all suddenly start fighting in the spirit world to determine who gets control over the body. Aang is one of those spirits after all. It's their spirits and minds that inhabit him giving him their skills they don't just remove aang from his body, put him in the dreamy world whilst the best suited avatar for the job gives it a crack. It's more like all the spirits and their skills are combined into one person. Which is why all the voices talk at once, including aangs. Like, if your a fan of dbzor Steven universe, think fusion. The end results a completely different thing then if it was just Roku or Kyoshi possessing aangs body like they did in the trial and when escaping that fire sage temple.

I personally think that the lion turtle was a good choice. One of the shows "hidden themes" is searching for hope. Aang constantly searches for hope and finds it in unlikely places such as Zuko becoming Aang's teacher. This all comes to its end with energy bending. Also it's a kids show, you can mention death but can't show it so I forgive it. Though yes, it could've been handled better.
@midnight4685 Жыл бұрын
I wish energy bending had been mentioned somewhere beforehand! It was so close, you can see all the building blocks with qi centres and Ty Lee and so on. It'd be really cool if it turned out Ty Lee had learnt her stuff from an old scroll or something that turned out that it was vaguely related to energy bending, or there was a passing comment from the guru about some people even being able to master others' energy once you've mastered your own.
@hyperfreeze271410 ай бұрын
i think having the Lion Turtle show up isnt necessarily a bad thing like many others. I just wish that instead of giving Aang the ability to energybend, it opened Aang's eyes to the peaceful solution. We could have had scenes of Ty Lee's chi blocking, Guru Pathik's lessons on chakras and the consultations with the previous Avatars flow into Aang's head and him saying "i know what i can do" or something. This might be the best of both worlds, you can find hope anywhere, but in your darkest moments hope is something you give yourself as well

@@hyperfreeze2714 i was thinking about this, and my solution also involves fixing the weird "back poke = avatar state" plot hole in ba sing se, aang does go into the avatar state, but for too long, giving azula the opportunity to kill him. the reason for being in it too long is because he tries to completely sever his earthly connections permanently, misinterpreting what the guru tried to teach him about the 8th chakra. after aang gets electrocuted by azula, he wakes up and tries to go to into the avatar state, only to be unable to do so, accompanied by visions of what went down in ba sing se. katara tries to help, and notices that his chi is "all twisted and tangled" in one spot - the 7th (or 8th) chakra. from here, aang is traumatized and tries to avoid thinking about the avatar state. as the gaang journey through the fire nation, however, he realizes just how urgent his duty to the world is, in the fullest sense - not only the other nations but the fire nation itself is out of balance. from the school to the painted lady village, even the fire nation has been thrown out of balance by the fire lord's actions. this culminates in a crisis of identity with aang taking the place of that episode where he's unable to sleep because of performance anxiety, but in this case because he can't seem to reconcile the notion of his love to katara and his duty to the world. after talking with sokka about love and duty, sokka reminds him about the time where he and his sister actually ditched aang, but then rejoined him. aang, realizing that he needs to not abandon his (valid but selfish) attachments, but place humanity and his selfless mission above them as the avatar, is able to go into the avatar state, if only for a few moments - the pain of ba sing se is still too much, but it gets better over time, and thus he still can't use it during the day of black sun. he learns to essentially bend his chi, to "untangle" it, and at least for a while, go into the avatar state. yadda yadda yadda meeting up with zuko, learning about firebending, and going to ember island. this time, about a week before sozin's comet and after the southern raiders, aang and the gaang argue about killing the firelord, aang talks about how important it is to him, and the others bring up a valid point of "but its not practical". aang says he wants to look through zuko's beach home for any way to defeat the firelord, and amidst the ruins he finds a small scroll about energy bending (it would make sense for ozai to consider it) (or you could have him remember smth about lion turtles back from the library episode) - now all he has to do is think about how to do so. he meditates on the value of not killing ozai and realizes that beyond just his culture being preserved, aang has the opportunity to completely destroy ozai, philosophically, vindicating the original sin of the war - the air nomad genocide. in the distance, sokka spots a moving island, and aang journeys onto it. turns out its a lion turtle woooo - here he learns how to take bending away. hell, we could even tie in the concept of the agni kai, and explain how zuko isn't entirely wrong - ozai has insulted the world's honor and must be dealt with severely and permanently - and neither is aang. all life is sacred, even the fire lord. he was once a cute baby, and could have turned out differently, so its not right to kill him (at least for aang). from here, he either rejoins the group and visits iroh and the white lotus, or theyre unable to follow him and they visit the white lotus instead. and the rest is history. this would be entirely feasible to do without adding any new episodes to the series - just replacing existing ones.

7:43 I actually think Katara beating Azula makes a lot of sense on a macro level. Katara is the character that most embodies the damage that the fire nation has done to the entire world. Her mother being killed, and her being the only water bender left, are tangible results from the war. So many of her character moments are about that struggle, like with Haru and Jet, they all bond because they've been hurt directly by the fire nation. And her big talk with Zuko at the end of Book 2 is all about how she hates him and the fire nation for what they've done to her. Obviously every main character is affected by the war but she is the one that it's usually focused and centered around. So her beating Azula is like her beating the entire fire nation. Azula embodies the ruthlessness and destruction of the fire nation and is next in line to be fire lord, while Zuko no longer has that fire nation attitude. So Katara beating Azula on a macro level is the hurt world defeating the destructive nature of the fire nation.

I can’t believe I never noticed that Iroh wasn’t at Zuko’s coronation, their relationship is such a core element of the show. If that doesn’t illustrate what makes your channel so good, I don’t know what does!
@daveforce44822 жыл бұрын
I also didn't but I am wondering if Iroh is actually liked in the world of Avatar. I mean, he would have conquered the Earth Kingdom. If anything, we was very similar to Ozai, maybe even worse because he actually succeded. Meaning that a lot of people actually really hate him potentially. We know what a great guy Iroh is now, but a lot of people will still think he was the same as Ozai and just vanished? If you think about it, not a lot of people would have such bad feelings about Zuko. People were always flaming him being the exiled prince, but he wasn't in charge of war efforts and also beat Azula with Katara. Surely, Iroh conquered the Earth Kingdom back, but with the White Lotus, which always seemed like a secret thing. I think Iroh doesn't want anyone besides his closest friend&family to know that he did that. Meaning that he also didn't want to have any role in Zuko's ceremony to take away from Zuko's redemtion. Maybe people would give Iroh credit or something. Also in Legend of Korra, Iroh seems to have zero business with the throne. He had his tea shop and then went to the spirit realm. But there are also a lot of issues here that are not that logical. Most people in Zuko's ceremony actually know Iroh...

10:02 Aang was in total control of his actions, I feel. Guru Pathik taught him how to be in full control of the Avatar State. Aang was literally *just* about to open his seventh chakra, but locked it when he chose attachment to Katara. In the season 2 finale, Aang chose cosmic energy over Katara, unlocking his seventh Chakra, and having full control of the Avatar State. But then Azula shot him with lightning, closing the chakra again. It wasn't until that moment that Aang opens the chakra again, thus gaining full control of the Avatar State just as he did under Ba Sing Se.
@robschlom84082 жыл бұрын
How was he able to open the chakra again and not give up Katara? Clearly, he didn't give her up because they kiss at the end of the episode. Did he just temporarily re-open the chakra to beat the fireloard and then close it again? That seems like cheating.

Or... theres more than one way to master the avatar state. He isn't the first avatar to become a master and through all those avatars atleast one must have found a different way.
@philliphorton35412 жыл бұрын
I think it's more like he is now in total control of entering and leaving the avatar state, but I believe the avatar state itself can't really be fully entirely controlled by anyone, it's a combination of every single avatar, all of their thoughts and all of their experiences all together which is why aang came so close to killing Ozai before being able to stop himself since he is the current avatar so I think he gets like executive command to control the actual movements using all of that avatar knowledge and experience and, in cases like this, can go against the past avatars. He just isn't used to making his own decisions against those avatars in that state because all the other times he has entered it he has allowed the entirety of the avatar state to control itself
@TheAverageDutchman2 жыл бұрын
@@robschlom8408 I don't think giving up Katara meant he couldn't love her or be with her, after all we know that Avatar Roku loved and married a girl too and stayed with her for his entire life while presumably having control of the Avatar state. I think it was more about accepting that he needed to put the world and his duties as the avatar before the needs of himself or Katara. And accepting that the woman you love is perhaps not always the most important thing in the world is a big step to take. It's more of a symbolic "letting go" than a literal "accept you can never be with this person"

That scene where toph is hanging by sokkas fingers and he says "this is it toph, i dont think boomerang is coming back this time" and when she says "aye aye captain" with tears streaming down her face. The fact is is that she couldnt see anything in the moment, she was suspended in the air, the only thing she could feel was sokkas hand and she trusted him to that extent to be okay with it. I think Aang was in full control of the avatar state when he chased Ozai. Here’s my reasoning: The only attacks that actually landed on Ozai were all water and air based. No fire or earth attacks actually hit him, probably because of Aang’s ideals/beliefs. If this that was primal avatar Aang fighting, Ozai would’ve never flown out of that earth machine gun Aang pulled.

I feel like Katara beating Azula is a really awesome moment for her character actually! The entire series, from the very start, she has wanted to be a cracked water bender. She's constantly training and showing us new moves she's learnt. We've seen her grow to be a truly nuts water bender. And her finale moment? She shows us a crazy new move and beats literally the strongest bender we've seen in the show, Azula. That was part of her journey from the northern water temple, she wants to master water bending. And we see her finally beat one of the greatest threats that gAang has faced. That is pretty fucking awesome for Katara's character in my opinion.

I believe Hello Future Me pointed this out at one point. To show the power level difference between Ozai and Avatar State Aang, they both break different rules. What an amazing adventure this has been, it's been a ton of fun just watching it weekly. I hope to see what becomes of this channel with its new content. 6:40 Azula's lightning also appears to be uncontrolled and way crazier in this scene, arcing away from her instead of being very close to her fingers, specifically when she made the lightning ring before firing. We also saw Ozai using it very controlled last episode so it isn't just a comet thing. So it seems she can still generate it, but her mental state means it is very wild at this point. 8:50 I kinda like that the fight just takes a 180 once Aang enters the avatar state. Despite all Aang's training and work, Ozai is still much stronger than he is. But upon entering it, we finally get payoff for seeing all the short previews when Aang entered it before. It truly makes the form feel like someone who could keep peace in the world, that even the most powerful firebender in the world is so totally outmatched they can only try to flee.
