Overcrowded prisons trigger emergency measures in England

Prisons in England are now so full that people newly charged by the police are having their court appearances delayed because there might not be a cell available if they're sent to jail awaiting trial.
Critics say the whole situation is further evidence of a criminal justice system on the verge of collapse.
The Ministry of Justice says it's tackling the situation with a scheme known as Operation Early Dawn - which appropriately began at 5.30 this morning.

Private companies running our prisons aim for 8 - 10% profit margins. I wander how much privertisation plays a part in this picture. I know private prisons are more overcrowded than public prisons. Increased government spending can be drained by private profit extraction. Private prisons cost more per placement than public prisons. A prison crisis due to reaching capacity is serious in a democracy that is governed by rule of law.

There is always the capital punishment option without the 20 year wait of course. Most of these prisons are just 3 star hotels with a few extra guards so maybe just build actual prisons that punish those that commit crimes. Prisoners can still get hold of drugs and mobile phones and pretty much whatever they like so obviously there is alot wrong with the current system. The system of law needs to change before anything else.

We need a system like the USA. They accept prison space is limited and justice has a financial limit.. The DA’s have to manage those limited resources. That’s why they offer plea bargains. A court case might bring a 5 year sentence. But if you don’t go to court they will offer 3 years instead. That’s saves the cost of a trial and two years imprisonment.
