They are truly niche plants. Holey sandstone. I have granite all around me. Where i come from they're called echeveria, & different varieties have different flowers. I used to think they were boring little plants, but now i find them quite adorable.
@OverdevestNurseries4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. They are becoming very popular, and we are sure we don't need to tell you that they will look great in between rocky crevices of granite. So if you have a wall, raised bed, rock garden or anywhere that's sunny, gritty and well-drained, they will fit right in, thrive, be evergreen, and be a continual topic of conversation. I know that series of plants and one thing I didn't hear him say, (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if those plants get more direct sun, they will color up so brightly!!! I saw a few "golden nugget" cultivars as well as the red varieties.
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thanks, the native habitats for "Semps" is on high up on rocky mountain tops where there is no shade, so out in the open in sunny conditions is where they will always do better in a variety of ways including having better color.

Thank you. This idea is quite unique, fun to do, and it works! But just make sure that whatever rock you choose is porous, absorbs water and the pockets you drill DO NOT fill with water.

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say so! I suppose as time passes (and people discover it), this video will become more popular. However, it is pleasing to know that you found it interesting and hopefully it has inspired you to "have a go"! The neat thing about this idea is that you can do it almost anywhere outdoors, it doesn't need much space, the little plants are inexpensive, and once you get it completed, it is VERY EASY to look after! So, go on, have a go, and then let us know how you got on. Thanks again for taking the trouble to post your comment.

Interesting idea. We are in zone three where it is very cold a good bit of the year. My hen and chicks are doing well in-ground, and it would be interesting to see if some could survive winter in something like this. Might be worth a try. :) I only agave one variety atm, but will also look for some others to add variation. I am trying to plant hardy perennials that are both drought and cold tolerant and the hens-and-chicks I have so far have been real troopers. :)
@OverdevestNurseries3 жыл бұрын
In nature they live in "next to nothing" in mountainous terrain at high elevations, where it gets very cold in winter and out in full sun in summer - so most sorts are naturally very tough and durable. So, as you suggest, trying a few (as a test) is worth doing.... and then based on your results, you can expand your plantings in all sorts of creative ways. Planting them in contrasting groups where the colors and changing seasonal patterns play off each other is very effective. I would encourage you to experiment with different rock, stone and gravel combinations too.

Is it possible to root these in water? I inherited some that belonged to my sweet mom who recently passed away. One had gotten quite leggy & had fallen over. I noticed the base of the stem seemed like it was dying so I pinched it off & let it dry for a few days & then planted it. It did nothing. Well...the stem looks bad again! So can I put it in water to root? Or would that just finish it off? Any suggestions? Thanks!
@OverdevestNurseries3 жыл бұрын
They don't like wet conditions, so you would be better to break off a piece and just set (pressed in gently) into a sandy compost. Then be patient, it will form new roots and form a new plant. That's how it works in nature.

Where do u get sand stone
@OverdevestNurseries2 жыл бұрын
It occurs naturally in our area, so it is relatively easy to find. But you might have to ask at your local garden center or landscape supply center. Other types of porous rock may also work, for instance if you come across any place that sells "tufa" a highly porous lightweight rock that is imported from Italy, it would probably work even better!
