It’s nice to see you utilizing that awesome build. I sold the military box I purchased and went a different route. Still rockin the 12 valve though ✌️

Thanks! It’s been a fun setup but sometimes I feel like building an upscale version of the one that I put on our Honda Acty Kei truck. My oldest son is in college now so we almost don’t need all of the space in the Dodge anymore but maybe it will be nice if we ever choose to go full time on the road.

Great video, Andy! I love that awning! That Beetle at 5:35 reminds me of a story my Dad has, I'll see if I can do it justice... somewhere in central Mexico back in the late 90's my Dad drove his '88 Nissan Stanza Wagon (kitted out for camping in) up the side of one of the big volcanoes there - I'll have to ask him which one... of course it was dark when he got to the end of the dirt road, the trailhead. He stopped and camped out in the back of his wagon, and soon found himself in the *middle* of a thunder and lightning storm... he said lightning was happening well below him (he might have been above 10k feet?). He thought he might have overdone himself - but decided to wait it out until daybreak, for fear of trying to drive down a rutted dirt road in the dark, in torrential rains and lightning. At some point an hour or so later, through the noise, he heard a sound he couldn't figure out... then he saw lights. Someone drove up the road in a VW Beetle... stopped for a second next to my Dad's car, then continued driving *up the footpath* that went towards the summit of the volcano. He said that more than an hour later, the freakin' Beetle came putt putt putting back down the footpath - past him, back onto the dirt road, and went on down the mountain - disappeared into the night...

Ha ha that’s rad! People have taken those old Beetles into some gnarly terrain, it always amazes me how far you can push those things!

I found your channel, a couple weeks before you uploaded the mini-truck videos. I have been waiting to see more of the 2nd Gen. It's my ideal platform for an overland rig. Someday I'll have one.

Looks like an awesome trip. The Cummins is perfect for it. Do you bring extra fuel with you on these trips?
@OlympicOverland6 ай бұрын
Definitely my favorite diesel engine, it’s just so simple and easy to maintain. Our truck has a pretty big tank that is around 40 gallons so we typically do ok on fuel for trips in the U.S. but I would probably bring extra cans if we are ever lucky enough to make the trip into South America.

Awsome build man! I just purchased a 96 12 valve. Its been what ive wanted for a while now. An will be a upgrade for me from the 97 dodge v10. That is so bad on gas.. i have a jeep Cherokee that ive always went camping with. And been wanting to set up better for overlanding.but now seeing your setup. I feel i want to go that route instead. So was wondering if you could tell me how its been with a full size rig on the trails? An how is the gas mileage with your set up? Thank you. Nice videos
@OlympicOverland6 ай бұрын
Hi, and thanks! The 12 valve is a great platform to build on and I’m sure you will love yours. The Dodge was better on tighter trails before we built the taller top but I really wanted more of a tourer so it has worked out really well for us in its current configuration. We typically use or Kei truck 4x4 camper for tight trails but in more open terrain or desert conditions the Dodge is a beast and we typically get between 15-18 mpg’s. Cheers!
@victorhinojos31946 ай бұрын
@OlympicOverland hey sir I appreciate the response! Not bad that's pretty good for a loaded truck with gear for fuel mileage. I look forward to getting it close to yours jaja An yea makes sense those kie trucks are awsome. Love those videos as well. Appreciate the info. Salud brotha take care
@nickaffre15142 жыл бұрын
Great video How often did you use the 4X4 on the forestry roads? Did you need 4x4?
@OlympicOverland2 жыл бұрын
It was so dry we didn’t need to use 4wd much. A couple of spots south of La Pine going around windfall on FS roads because it was so soft & in Northern Nevada we ended up in a few deep sand/silt washes looking for a campsite but other than those spots and the dunes it wasn’t too bad.

What military bed is that
@OlympicOverland9 ай бұрын
It’s a modified aluminum M1031 box that was commonly found on military Chevy’s in the 80’s but could also be mounted on trailers. I removed the original roof and welded a new taller top with cabover sleeping area.
