Peter, Eric O. from the South Main Auto Repair KZbin channel (one of Ray's heroes, BTW) says as his tagline "Remember, viewers, if I can do it, you can do it." Use a heat gun to warm the sound reduction material before you try and pull it off. It makes it much easier to get that glue to unstick if it's warmed up and most of it stays on the sound reduction. also, lay it flat and warm the glue before you reapply it. If it doesn't want to stick back a little Sikaflex will fix that problem.

Boo! There IS a recalibration procedure for Benz airmatic suspension. Even if the second strut was bad and needed replacement the system NEEDS a recalibration. I really like your work 99% of the time but the lack of due diligence here is a ding on the report card. Come on Ray! Excellent regulator replacement. Great job. FYI, I've seen people use a Irwin bar clamp or similar to pinch the glass and hold it up while working below. Gives the third hand that could have been useful.

In case Ray reads this, you may want to purchase a couple of rubber (not plastic) door stops, normally used to hold open a door say in your house and used at the bottom of the door. I used them for years to hold windows in place on a door window glass to make disassembly / reassembly much easier. Former Autobody guy here, 25 yr's plus experience.

It’s totally over-engineered, agree. I will say that the quality is light years ahead of the one I had to rectify in my wife’s Mazda. Whilst extremely easy to get to because of the simplistic/basic nature of the car, the quality of the regulator is laughable.. it was about as strong as taping some drinking straws together & sitting some glass on top.

Here is a couple of useful tips for when working with interior trims. - Get some plastic trim tools, they are cheap and are much safer to use on painted surfaces and around interior trims - A Heat gun is your friend when working with adhesives, most trim adhesives are a Butyl base and a little heat makes them separate with ease and even permits adhesion when reassembling

One tip I can give is don’t pull those vapor barriers off the goo….. use a fresh razor blade and cut that black goo! It tends to keep it where it’s at on both the door and the vapor barrier. I’ve been covered in that junk plenty of times! Those strings when ya just pull it off go everywhere! Just minor pull and cut it with a knife and it will be so much cleaner for you! Give it a try. 😊 I think you’ll love it! I’ve always hated window regulators lol some vehicles make it very tricky to get the regulators out! And hidden fasteners are very frustrating! One tiny screw can make you wanna break them off lol we have all had those moments of rage building 😂 oh course we hold it back. Lol

As a busted arse ex Auto Electrician down under (injured on duty) , we didn't have any issues of the glass falling down ! reverse gravity in Australia. Only kidding. Duct tape or masking tape to hold the glass up is a big help, a lot of vehicles have the window regulators riveted in, if you do not have a tong type riveter we just used to nut and bolt them. I don't no what the manufactures make the goop out of that holds the plastic sheet behind the door trim, it has the magical property of transferring to anything you have nearby. Nearly everything short of nuclear fusion is needed to remove it. Keep up the good work.

Test and adjust with door panel loose- those cars have the window drop 1/2 inch when you touch the handle and also go up 1/2 inch when the door latches. To do it you need to pop the switches out of the panel so you can open and close the door and have access to the adjusters. Fiddly, but better than having to remove the whole panel later on.

@commodorenut
@commodorenut Жыл бұрын
Good point. In the GM Holden workshop manuals they always stated to measure from the bottom of the rim to the wheel arch lip. I wondered for a while why they didn’t just use the centre of the rim measurement. I had the fortune of meeting some key personnel, some of who wrote manuals, and we had a number of discussions on various methods and topics. The wheel lip thing was kept for so many years for 2 key reasons. 1. When they first started stating these dimensions (over 50 years ago) many cars had wheel covers or partial covers (like dog bowl hubcaps) hiding the true centre of the wheel. 2. Using the bottom lip gave a longer measure which was more easily “eyeballed” for vertical accuracy. For all the car nerds out there, these guys who write the manuals and parts books are next level. 😮

I was reworking a bunch of built connex shelters at one company I worked for and my best method I found was to use an oversize bit to drill the head off, then with a slight undersize bit just tap the rest of the rivet through the hole. if done carefully it doesnt deform the hole at all and the replacement rivet grabs just as well as the original

Hi Ray ...... Just a quick thing and I am not a mechanic but Throughout my 60 years on this crazy planet I was told from mechanics in Australia and I assume it is the same in other countries that the DRIVERS side suspension was set slightly higher than passenger side to accommodate for the fact that the driver was always in vehicle and passengers were not always there. Height was only slight but that was what I was informed for the slight difference. Or is that just a crazy Aussie talking lol

I’m an Aussie. Haven’t come across the L/R ride height variance to account for a drivers weight, but there are tolerances stated in the workshop manuals for the cars I own which could account for up to 1/4 inch variance. The crown of the road would make more difference than L/R height differences. However, my wheel alignment guy knows that for 95% of the driving I do, I’m usually the only person in my daily, and in my restored 80s Aussie muscle car, so he gets me to sit in the drivers seat when he does the front camber and toe settings.

The firewall was cheap cardboard and the engine compartment was so tightly packed you had to rip most of it out to get to anything other than the spark plugs. THEN we have anything from GM. The worst offender from them has to be the three different fastener types needed to undo just to get to the back of a headlight fitting on one design and then the stupid "waterproof cup" on the back of the bulb fitting itself that never screws back on - and is pointless anyway... Just about every manufacturer has stupid designs somewhere inside.

People who buy a Mercedes do not dream at night of working on their car. Well made cars are not designed for ease of maintenance. They are designed for optimal use, fit and function. The purpose of the design is to bring lasting comfort and performance to the driver/owner; it is not in any way concerned with the comfort of a mechanic, nor should it be. The window regulator was wrecked by someone trying to slim-jim the door. It should have never needed replacing.

Maybe its just me that I used to help friends with EU cars but this to me seems so straight forward. Screws behind the handle panel, some screws in the speaker section one or two in the latch section. Remove teh small triangle speaker tweeter, slide out the panel. (clips are easier thand slide up and unhook one IMHO) The only "strange" for may is that module in the door. but trust me its better if its there especially with all those buttons! It handles all the buttons and features of the door and allow to have less cables running in the door hinge. If you cont teh number of buttons of the door and imagine the wiring diagram for all that mess without the door module would be even worse. I've worked on some cars that didnt had that and they had like 50 pin connetors in the door. 50 wires all packed together and once one start failing the others are generally bad too. then you have to swap the whole door harness. (Window regulators wires are also low gauge and more rigid driver side have to push power to the other doors, imagine with 5 door cars how a mess it is. The module handle the buttons and provide info to power to the specified door motor via its own module)

Ok I gotta say the level of skill and patience to tear down, adjust and repair that Mercedes door is on the level of some of the jet engine maintenance I did in the USAF building jet engines. Lots of repeat the steps over and over to get it right etc.... Love your level of humor and patience doing this door repair all the while trolling us and filming at the same time. : ) Not boring and you filmed it as well as can be done doing a door window. Some of that door is soooo old school car designs. I appreciate the warning about the loud noises too. In our hangar we always yell out “Noise” when we are about to do something very very loud. So if ya are near by and have your ear protection you know to put it on soon cause it’s about to get loud. Mostly riveting. I always enjoy those “I do Cars” video tear downs too. Love the content, keep up the great work. My connection to Florida, I grew up in Okaloosa county, Ft. Walton Beach/ Destin area.
