That camp reminds me of hunting camps that were packed in on horses in the back country of Montana. I have a camp setup with no center pole. The combined Tent and stove weight is 14 pounds. I have used this setup for 25 + years I have a few shorts of this camp on my channel if you're interested. I always carry an "auger extension" on my sled just in case and I have had to use it. It is simply a length of copper pipe with holes drilled in each end for the auger pins. Nice video, you have your drone down! Thank You!

Well that was cool! I like the frameless canvas tent idea, using the webbing with D rings and ratchets to hold it up. Another point for the Snowtrekker vs Atuk debate is the drying space up top. With our Snowtrekker you have the whole ridgeline to hang things and spread them out for drying. Great video man 👍

My recommendation is to go bigger than 8X10. The difference in weight is not very much and the extra space will be appreciated. I have had a 10X13 Snowtrekker for almost 20 years for just my dog and myself. It can serve as a gathering place for 6-8 people or luxurious accomodations for 2 with a sleeping area, dining area and wood storage.

I have to send you some pics of what me and the wife made today for our one tigris rocdomus. It's a hot tent that goes around our hammocks. Well we went one step further and made it free standing so it doesn't need trees to hang from. We can literally set our hammocks up anywhere now. So 2 hammocks inside a hot tent. 0 trees to hold it up. I always throw a tarp over the whole works like he did over his tent. Every tent in every situation where there is sever weather or extended stays.

Have been camping in a Woods Prospector since I was 4 and still have it over 50 yrs later. We could sleep 5 and put it up between 2 trees just using ropes with guild ropes pulling out the sides. Rolled up into a sleeping bag size and we canoe tripped with through Algonquin, Temagami and Quebec. Tents have come along way but don't last like these. Doesn't have a floor but we just brought some light poly that kept everything dry. In the process of trying to put a stove opening in it for next winter. I do like the strap idea but noticed a little tear probably due to tension so don't know about durability for the long term with that system. Enjoyed the video.

It's a tad on the heavier side but still pretty portable and can be broken down into two halves which could be worn as weather protection or used as a shelter half. You could even have a stove inside and run the pipe up through a sleeve opening using a couple of sticks to open the sleeve or a protective barrier around the stove pipe.

Your previous posts still aren't showing up anywhere but these came through, thanks for all your effort to get that done :) I like the Lavvu style in a lot of ways but the main reasons I would favour a Snowtrekker over it are no centre pole, breathable fabric that I trust more than synthetic around a stove, more headroom, more convenient stove locations. But if I ever found a deal I certainly wouldn't mind adding one to my collection 😜

Hey Jonathan Love the video, entertaining as always. I know you love the winter camping,I’m sure your excited to get the canoe out and in the water.. As am I.. My brother and I are doing the Pic river this spring in honour of Leave Behind. One of my favs from your library.. In your experience and being the Pic is right in your backyard. How do you think the water levels will be like around end of May? Thanks in advance I know you love your solitude when out filming but would love to meet you on the water one day.. Take care.. Jeff

Thanks a lot Jeff! Love to hear that. On that vid, in case you don't have maps, I put links to my map for it in the description. There's also a facebook group "Greenstone and area canoe routes" where you can get feedback from more locals (some of whom know the rapids much better). In May it will be a MUCH different river and I would advise extreme caution unless you're strong whitewater paddlers. The long section I mostly waded south from Kawepiti Lake would likely be a very technical, high volume run and it wouldn't be possible to wade it. However, there's a (likely overgrown) portage around it through Jackfish pond if needed. Wateroffice has a gauge on the Pic and you can see here in 2020 the difference between fall and May levels. wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/report/historical_e.html?stn=02BB003&dataType=Daily&parameterType=Level&year=2020&mode=Graph

Don't you think your fishing abit too shallow? In winter conditions don't the fish tend to go a bit deeper to stay warm and to get better access to oxygen?
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 2 жыл бұрын
Tried deeper as well (but cut footage due to lack of any action) and shallow can be great in winter too. But in late winter I believe the bottom is getting low in oxygen again, and in spring it turns over and gets fresh oxygen...but I could be wrong

@@LostLakes Thanks. Yes your right there is a boundary layer thast the fish like to be in for the winter that is compromised once the suface water temp hits a certain temp and turn over occurs. Just wondering cause even though its march we had an unseasonably cold winter this year and IMO springs going to be a long time coming especially in places where I live where it just wsn't cold be we got way more snow than we are used to. Heck my parents didn;t just have to get the snow blown away from the house this year but their hole back yard which got to about 5ft deep or more in places.

Yes, I have to mention, I have been a bit skeptical about hot-tents, but that one, okay, very nice, for sure that has potential. Of course, all videos have been excellent, also, have to mention those skill-sets you have and developing, in the future, I suspect will be one of the most important. Anyway, also noticed the videos of the get-together, of all the KZbinrs organized by Joe, it would be most excellent if that is annual, or semi-annual, ah, if so, will you join in on that? best!

You know Jon when you lost your 💩 on your camera 📷, i think your blood sugar was low and you were hangry. I recommend some snacks. I know this from being a diabetic. That tent ⛺️ looked like the hotels in Toronto. The bunks and the set up must have been a bit of work. If the ice 🧊 gets any thicker you will need and auger extension.

Jon, (Girl in the Wild) Brooke (and Dave) Whipple (survived 49 days on Alone) has long used a white tarp over her canvas tents because it lets in a lot more light than the colored tarps. I just thought I’d pass that nugget on to you. That was quite the luxurious set up your friend has there. Too bad the ice was slushy.
