Overseeding Lawns // What You Really Need to Know For it to Be a Huge Success

Here in the Phoenix area, the winter rye season is when we can actually enjoy our lawn. Nothing like Thanksgiving and/or Christmas dinner on the patio looking at a deep green lawn. I love my Bermuda in the summer, but its really just for me to mow low and enjoy in the early mornings. Winter is for rye here and as much work as it is to go back and forth (and its a LOT), I have a hard time looking at dormant Bermuda when the weather is in the 60s and 70s for months.

I totally agree with you. I have found if you cut the grass a little higher the last couple cuts it makes for a better looking lawn in the winter.

I don't have Bermuda grass but I agree that a dormant Bermuda looks good in the winter especially with a heavy frost with the sun shining causing it to sparkle

I have 2 questions regarding my Bermuda lawn. I have a very bumpy lawn. I have followed your advice on a very thick and green lawn, but when I mow it's very bumpy. The green is there but I have to level it. What do I do and how do I do it. Can you help? Thanks Mike M

Can you overseed a warm season lawn with tall fescue?

You could. I wouldn't. Fescue can be a booger to kill off. I wish I would have talked about this in the video as well. I've seen it done too. Didn't turn out that great. Really became a struggle between seasons. But, this is just my opinion. Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.

Hey! I think this is the video I needed! If you remember I said i seeded in the spring in my backyard and now my Bermuda has been struggling and I feel like the possibility is that the cool season grass is holding on just enough that’s it’s created that or even just prevented the Bermuda from spreading efficiently. Again one of my thoughts. But in my case, is it possible to kill off the cool season ONCE the Bermuda goes dormant, or is it better for the Bermuda to get cool season weeds and grass in the spring?

Hey man. That prolly has a lot to do with what's going on, along with maybe a bit too much shade. If the bermuda goes dormant and you really have a lot of cool season grass, you might wanna think about killing some off while the bermuda is dormant early, early next spring. Depends on your weather there. I wouldn't wanna kill it this year, because you'd rather have something there instead of big holes for weed seeds to make a home and come in. Hope this helps. @@BudgetLawns absolutely! I can keep you posted too, like I said it’s really my year taking care of my lawn and the last two especially were the worst of my homeownership. This was the first time I’ve ever scalped or aerated. I have a feeling I even was late on the scalp. So I’m not 100% sure if can remember when my Bermuda starts to go dormant, but I figured if someway my Bermuda gets really brown quite a while before anything cool season does, if I could try to kill the cool off then? I’m getting the cool would still be on its way out though and better to try to hit at the start of its regrowth? I’ll might try to get some more photos of my backyard close up show you those problem areas. I’m really excited to see how next season goes now that I can have a better understanding of how a lot of this works.

It’s hard to say cause I don’t know the cycle or your lawn from when things are green and growing or brown and dormant. Whenever you kill the cool season stuff you just wanna make sure the bermuda is dormant.

I've never overseeded, detached, aerated, or overseeded in my life. Best cool season lawn out of 123 homes. Complete waste of time and money unless your lawn is total dog 💩.
