Fun fact: When the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Marshall Foch (who was present at the signing), said of it, “It is not a peace treaty, it’s an armistice for twenty years.” He was right.
@mayankagarwal87399 ай бұрын
He said it because he felt that the treaty should be more harsh and France should occupy the Rhineland, so that Germans would be perpetually incapable of any revenge. So he was factually correct, but if people listened to him, Germany would have been in much worse shape

When Hitler wanted to invade them in WWII every civilian was armed, 400,000 men were enlisted into the military, and they were explicitly told by the government to fight to the last man. (Even if the government fell they told the citizens to keep fighting.)

How to win at Trench Warfare: (1.) Tunnel under your own Frontline Trenches. (2.) Bait enemy to attack/ advance. (3.) Pour out like Army-Ants and delete them. Long version: Build large systems of tunnels _underneath_ Your trench system, with many well-concealed entrances/ exits to the tunnels all throughout your trench system. Keep up the ruse, fighting up in the trenches, keeping the trenches fully-manned, for months, making sure the stand-off is believable, and that there's time to dig/ build the tunnels, plus enough barracks rooms and command facilities, ammunition storage, etc. Use counter-intelligence operations to make the enemy think they can pull off a major attack. You'll want their attack to be as large as possible, but not so large that they continue advancing past your first, Frontline trenches. You'll want a bit of a second no-man's land dividing your Frontline trenches with your second line of trenches that you can retreat to. If you have to, you can build the tunnels under your Frontline trenches very quickly, like Viet-Cong style. But if there's more time, then larger, cleaner, more spacious, more structurally- sound tunnels would be good, not just for troop morale, health, and safety, but also for increasing the effectiveness of quickly moving large numbers of troops, and also staging a sizeable force down there. You'll also want multiple tunnels that connect back to your secondary line of trenches, so your forces can be moved in to the tunnel without detection, stay well-supplied, and retreat if necessary. As for above-ground connecting trenches between you Frontline trenches and your second-tier trenches, you'll want to close those off or fill them in, so that when the enemy takes the bait and occupies your Frontline trenches, they won't be able to advance to your second-tier with cover. You'll be connected by tunnels, so filling-in the connecting above-ground corridors will help further-sell the idea that your line was vulnerable, and you were planning a retreat. You'll need that second No-Man's land to keep the enemy from advancing further. When the enemy advances, feign an above -ground retreat in the trenches, so that the enemy moves into your Frontline trenches in-force. Let them settle in, while lightly peppering them with small-arms fire from your secondary-line of trenches. But only shoot enough to keep them where they are. Hopefully they'll bring in reinforcements on top of their initial assault troops. All your extra troops who've been in reserve down below in the tunnels will wait for one of two things to happen, to then attack in a massive, close-quarters ambush: (1.), an enemy soldier accidentally bonks his helmet or rifle on the wall of the trench, and hears it strike wood, instead of the dirt that's covering the hidden door/ hatch, and he's about to investigate. If half of your troops below are constantly standing by, ready to pour out, then the other half that's sleeping, would have just enough time to grab their weapons and rush to their designated attack-point. If one of the concealed entrances is discovered, and this instantly triggers your ambush, you'll still have the element of surprise. (2.) If none of the concealed entrances are discovered, you can intentionally plan the attack however you like. Let the enemy get comfortable, hit them while they're sleeping, or hit them while your retreated-trench-troops have a firefight across no-man's land with your house-guests above; or hit them during an artillery bombardment when the enemy think there's no possible way anyone is crossing no-man's land; etc., whatever you want. If you can manage to prevent even a single enemy troop from escaping your ambush, you can do this more than once, and take some serious chunks out of the enemy's total forces. But your ambush would need to have enough tunnel-egress points into the trenches, to instantly occupy every last enemy soldier, so that none of them can Get a radio message off before they die. Any enemy weigh a radio would be the #1 target. That would be the ultimate battle-victory, if the enemy leadership, back behind their own lines, thought their Frontline trench-troops all died under the normal circumstances of trench warfare. They'd move more troops to the front and you could start over with the same plan. Depending on the original layout of your Frontline trench system, you could have all the tunnel entrances in places where soldiers would be unlikely to hang-out, like little, recessed, dead-end split-offs from the main walkways. You wouldn't want your ambush troops to open their concealed hatch right in the middle of a main trench walkway, where there could be dozens of soldiers within a few meters, all ready to fight. Maybe you could _only_ put rain coverings over parts of the main sections of the trenches, and do the ambush during a heavy rain, when the exposed little dead-end inlets won't have a bunch of enemy soldiers sitting around smoking or whatever. The more troops you can get through and out the concealed doors, without instantly getting shot at, the more overwhelmed the enemy will be. You'd have to get creative though, because the enemy will be using your own trench while facing backwards. So what used to be rear-wall storage-inlets, are now on the side that's facing your retreated forces. So your Frontline trench has to have at least two main, parallel trenches, so that you can count on where they'll mainly be. But if you dig these storage inlets into the front (what's originally the front) of your trench, that might look very suspicious. So your Frontline trench would have to be engineered specifically for this strategy, with a connected, parallel, rear-main trench that the enemy would naturally use to face your retreated troops. That would leave your original Frontline trench at their backs. This would've been so much shorter if I could just draw a picture!

If you've ever been in Switzerland it's not difficult to see why: 1) Almost no resources worth fighting for. 2) No big threat to anbody around since their army was and still is too small to occupy bigger territories. 3) The Alps are a deathtrap for ever army you send in. Just like the 300 greeks hold a narrow path vs a huge army, the small swiss army + their trained and armed civilian could shut down the valleys and defend them vs much larger troops. Today besides their many bunkers in the mountains they have massive retractable barriers in the valleys to stop any army movement. Also the Alps are no easy target for any aircrafts.

Wuanslm yeah, let’s face it: we weren’t prepared for any war at that time. Winter is okay, because Finland is in the same climate zones as St. Petersburg or Murmansk, so snow and ice aren’t new. But war then your army is fresh from another political cleansing... a lot of professional officers from imperial army were recognized as unreliables long before that, because, you know, they weren’t communists. And new wave of people with real war experience from WW I and civil war was also not good enough, because, you know, political reasons. And then you terrorized your commanding officers for several years and killed a lot of competent people, a brand new war isn’t a good idea. So, yes, it was very ironic. Quick fact about the battle of Jutland, both main fleets had actually been patrolling for months in these waters, accompanied on the british side by seaplanes and german side by zeppelins for air reconnaissance, because they actually did want a fight. Second fact, the battle of Jutland happened literally the one time both sides had no air recon. Both fleets found eachother by pure luck.

Even though Italy was never fighting on the side of the Germans in WW1. They had a defensive pact with Germany and Austria-Hungary prior to the war, but since they started the war, it wasn't a defensive conflict, so the pact didn't apply. When they did join the war, they joined the allies hoping to get some Italian territories that Austria was still controlling at the time.

My Great Grandfather fought in WW1. His Name was Joseph Young. He was Native American so they didn't give a shit about him or his friends he enlisted with. His battalion were put on the front lines. They were either killed or captured. My grandfather was one of the captured. The Germans never seen a person with brown skin before. So they asked my grandfather who he was, and where he came from. He told them he was a Native American Cree and he came from Manitoba. They told him this wasn't his fight and let him free. If the Germans didn't spare my grandfather and let him go, he wouldn't have had a family, and I'd never have been born. *EDIT:* I didn't think this would get much attention. It did. If you believe me, that's awesome. If not, that's less awesome. But I'm proud of my grandfather, Joe Young. So fuck all y'all

when the americans arrived in 1917, the first thing they did was to fight like the french and british did at the beginning of the war : huge frontal assault. It was a mistake due to a lack of experience in a moment where the french and british didn't use this strategy anymore.

@roasted pancakes doubt people would call it a warmongering nation. If it joined at the beginning of ww1 it would’ve looked the exact same as France, Russia, UK and Germany who all joined because of an alliance. Same in ww2 if it joined with the UK and France where it would’ve looked normal as protecting Poland albeit unsuccessfully.

@@agent_sus3273 well it does get called a warmongering nation because america has been involved in a huge amount of wars since ww1 and ww2 and has escalated the situation of every single one whilst not always achieving a great amount of things. It wouldn’t be called a warmongering nation just for joining ww1 which was my point.

I was wondering what was happening with Spain but then I remembered Spanish Influenza, and I just imagined the countries like “Hey Spain…?” And Spain like “leave me alone I have the flu!”
@nightowl32182 жыл бұрын
You do know Spanish influenza originated in the USA right
@Beremor2 жыл бұрын
Spain was simply neutral at the time. Where the Spanish flu originated is unknown, but the first major outbreaks happened in Canadian military camps and spread through troop deployments into France. The press wasn't allowed to report on it (if they found out at all) so as to not show weakness to their allies or to the enemy. Spain, being neutral, wasn't under any such obligation to stay quiet, so when the virus reached Spanish cities, their press was the first in the world to write headlines over it. Thus it was dubbed the Spanish influenza. Source: Extra Credits' video series on the topic.

"This isn't Peace. It is an Armistice for 20 Years!" - French Marshall Ferdinand Foch, commenting on the Treaty of Versailles.
@ZORO12ful8 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: He said it because he considered the Treaty to be too light. He wanted France to annex or at least occupy the Rhineland for 50 years in order to gut Germany once and for all. His words proved to be true as Germany was still the biggest economy in Europe up until the crash of 1929 when the entire world's economy blew up and went on to remilitarize to start another war.

luis angel encarnacion I don't think that there's more to explain. Ferdinand Foch considered the treaty to not be enough to stop Germany from becoming resurgent and desiring revenge. It was true because, as history shows us, Germany still had the biggest economic growth in Europe during the interwar up until the Great Depression. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Foch#Paris_Peace_Conference alphahistory.com/weimarrepublic/golden-age-of-weimar/ Just as a conclusion, it wasn't the Treaty of Versailles which facilitated the rise of the Nazis, but the Great Depression and the German revisionism from the republic which solely blamed all of its problems on the post-WW1 conferences.
