Fun fact about Cannae; in terms of casualties per day, the number incurred by Hannibal would not be surpassed until the Battle of The Somme, in WW1. This means that in the odd 2100 years after Cannae, in the continent of Europe, no one managed to kill as many men in one day as Hannibal, and it would take inventions such as the machine-gun and the howitzer to inflict them.

Battle of Cannae is still crazy to read about. Imagine being a roman soldier in the middle of that formation. You run forward with the rest of the legion, then suddenly stop. You can't tell what's going on. You've been standing for a good while now, barely moving forward or backwards. You're sweating and tired from exhaustion. Then you notice that your fellow soldiers are slowly getting close to you that there's barely any breathing room. Then you find yourself getting squeezed on all sides. There's some commotion from your fellow legion, then thats when you hear it. Screams and panic getting closer and closer. Really more of a Bloodbath of Cannae.

What’s funny is that despite Cannae being a colossal military defeat for the Roman’s, the death count still wasn’t as bad as the storms in the first Punic wars
@Nobody7724611 ай бұрын
It worse, because those that died in battle not only lost their lives to the enemies, but also all their equipments, armours, weapons, money, supplies,...... All very valuable stuff in the ancient world. With 80.000 dead heavy infantry, their enemies could raise and arms SEVERAL new armies. As oppose to loss of men to natural disaster, in which at least their enemies wouldn't have such an upperhand because all valuables were lost, not fall into their hands to use against you. So yeah, i'd say Cannae was worse for the Romans.

Definitely the ‘home team factor’ of it’s our homeland, our people suffering, you also have to factor in that the ‘home team’s generals definitely know their land the best! To me what really does in any invading force in that scenario is the almost false morale you get when seeing the defenders “retreating” through their lands, causing you to want to push forward more intensely! Eventually causing over extension of supply lines, and a brutally desperately successful counter attack

When the Romans complained, the chieftain threw his sword on his side of the scale and said “Woe to the vanquish”. Also Romans viewed the Celtics as terrifying barbarians because they were “less civilized”. Sure they were less disciplined and tactical, but the unpredictability, size, strength, and lighter hair/skin was scary to the Romans, and even more so when dealing with Germanic tribes.

@FlaviusBelisarius-ck6uv Жыл бұрын
@@danielefabbro822 Quite on the contrary. Yes, he ultimately lost the war in the end, but having waged such a masterful campaign with so many tactical victories and having shown tremendous martial skill and valor, history remembers him still as one of the greatest generals who ever lived, even more famous than his rival and the man who defeated him, Scipio Africanus. He’s lionized and even the Romans came to respect him. Scipio Africanus himself was outraged with Rome chasing Hannibal, now an old man and with no army, considering it to be highly dishonorable and just plain dickish to harass someone who was an enemy no more and he was far from the only one. The Romans later came to greatly respect Hannibal and Septimius Severus, a Roman Emperor of Punic Descent, later furnished Hannibal’s tomb with marble. By your logic, is Napoleon remembered as the eternal loser for having lost in the end? No, he’s still considered *the* greatest general who ever lived and he himself considered Hannibal one of history’s greatest generals and one of his own idols, alongside Alexander, Caesar, Turenne, Eugene Von Savoy, Frederick Der Grosse and Gustavus Adolphus.

3:25 I noticed a small detail here: Hannibal says "Yea boii" which just seems like a common modern phrase, but there was actually a celtic tribe named the "Boii" who lived in southern germany and I think they also lived in northern Italy. Small detail but pretty cool how oversimplified always adds them in :D

The showcase for the battle of Cannae was amazing and it felt SO satisfying seeing Hannibal's strategy. Hannibal was really a great strategist!
@starbreeze7249 Жыл бұрын
It was one of those things that required a good general and an experienced army to really notice. Hannibal is one of the biggest reasons future Roman generals would be so effective
@primetime3422 Жыл бұрын
Cannae is not just a testament to Hannibal’s genius, but also a testament to Rome’s metal. No state could lose at least 5% of its male population and continue fighting to victory. Rome potentially lost 20% of its male population and not only continued to fight, but win.

@@MisterSandmanAU Byzantine empire is a recent term. They called themselves the Roman Empire and were a continuity of the Eastern half of Rome. Now, there can be a case that they fell in 1204, but 1453 was where they definitely fell.
