I wish someone had pointed out that the reason so many people feel pushed to go to college is because EMPLOYERS started using a 4-year degree as a weeding-out tool. And now they let AI do it for them leaving little chance for job-seekers to even speak with a potential employer to explain how their life experiences, self-directed learning, reading, etc. have given them the same or better skills to do the job. Change that and we might have less college debt. Thanks for a great show. Glad to see my home state of Maine represented. (I grew up on a dirt road in a small town in central Maine. @ tallard666 the Oklahoma and Texas laws people are complaining about, aren’t going after the woman. We agree, your body your choice. Just like someone addicted to drugs. Your body, your choice. You shouldn’t go to jail for what you do to your own body. Even if society doesn’t agree with it. But we do arrest the drug dealer for distributing dangerous substances and capitalizing on the vulnerability of the addict. We view it the same when it comes to the dr. performing the abortion. The dr is breaking their oath when they kill an innocent child that is not endangering the mother. The laws make exceptions for circumstances where the mother’s health is at risk. You have a right to do what you want with your own body, but society has every right to prevent others from helping you do something it sees as immoral. That is the discussion at hand. The CEO does not need a 50 billion dollar salary when he can have a 10 million dollar salary so the rest of the profits are well distributed among the work force. Obamacare was a compromise to "win over" Republicans, it was a conservative manufactured healthcare plan, and who did it win over? hardly anyone. 0 Republicans in the Senate voted for it, only 1 in the House voted for it. literally a conservative plan created by Nixon in the 70's, rejected by every Republican because it came from a Democratic president. yet the Democrats are the party that's moved "so far left" because they defend the rights of gay and trans people who are out there committing suicide on a regular basis. stop with the faux "moderate Republican". Manufacturing in America? Companies moved their manufacturering plants to other countries to avoid the lawsuits when they polluted our country and needed to become a superfund site. Years ago Motorola in Phoenix had to shut down because it was leaking extremely dangerous chemicals from their storage tanks into the ground and it was polluting the ground water in a huge chunk of the valley. That one plant employed several thousand people. We have a tiny little electronics company in my home town. They used to rinse the chemicals off of the components and had a hose that simply ran outside and discharged onto the lawn....they are situated on top of the towns aquifer...gee what could go wrong there? We have to realize that we NEED to make a deal with the devil with regard to big businesses. We need to incentivize off shore companies to come here and create more jobs here, by offering major tax cuts. You're missing the point. The cost of the products that the onshore companies produce will be dramatically higher than the products made offshore. If there was a viable market for such, businesses would be flocking to build factories here. That toothpaste is already out of the tube. Bill is 100% correct on this one.

I think that the promise of better paying jobs to give manufacturing workers a better living standard was the greatest lie ever told. Machine trades industry workers wages adjusted for inflation hasn't risen since the 70's. We compete with low wage workers in other countries and we have to adhere to regulations while they don't. Even without giving a raise in wages, American manufacturing still can't compete with China, or the new darling of the global economy India. Their citizens are not going to buy American products because they can't afford them anymore than our low wage workers can. It's a big lie told by Republicans like Trump and we're not going to get those jobs back. When politicians like Nixon opened up trade relations with China it spelled the end to manufacturing in America. Either we raise the standard of living of the working poor so people can afford American made goods or we continue to consume products made in low wage countries like China and India. Political interventions are not going to solve this issue, it's an economic issue and unfortunately we the consumer are going to have to pay more while receiving a higher wage across the board to offset the cost of moving jobs back to America or we're going to have to continue to use this business model of looking for lower income people to exploit in poorer countries than China and India.
" We need to incentivize off shore companies to come here and create more jobs here" Oh yeah, you're gonna subsidize them further? You won't get cheaper products that way. Carlin said ages ago that USA doesn't even make good stuff anymore, better let someone else do them. And if you're a company that say for instance looks for engineers...well, gotta tell ya, but you're going to find far more of them in China (and even India) than you're going to find them in USA and Europe. Walmart hasn't had $9 jeans in 20 years. They're $25. It doesn't cost more to make them. The problem is the idea of never ending growth. Companies have to grow every quarter of every year forever and ever even though that's not actually possible to do. So to show "growth" they raise the price of a pair of jeans little by little, pocketing that extra money to show to their stock holders.

If you think it wouldn't cost more to buy clothing that is made in America, then you obviously need to take an economics course or read a few more books. Have you noticed how nobody in the media ever brings up how Hillary also still hasn’t conceded and called Trump illegitimate for his entire presidency? It’s a problem when he questions the election but completely fine when she does it.
@@bonanimathambo8721 " how Hillary also still hasn’t conceded" She had her concession speech THE DAY AFTER THE DAMN ELECTION. Trump doesn't question the presidency, he downright works AGAINST DEMOCRACY. You better take a hint when a guy sends love letters to dictators. How slow are some of you?

@@bonanimathambo8721 Hilary has conceded the election. Did she question the means by which he won the 2016 election? Yes she did. But even with her questions about how he got elected in 2016, she conceded. She called Trump after the election and called him and conceded and said he was President. So even if you think Hilary is wrong in her assessment of how Trump won in 2016, she did concede that he won and was president. That's the important thing for our democracy, that everyone recognize that there is only one President at the time, whether you think they did it legally or illegally, that there's one President. To treat it differently is to be far more interested in Hilary Clinton, or Donald Trump than the United States of America.

In the regular part of the show, Bill argued in New Rules that people need to figure out for themselves how to evaluate the truth of what they hear, right after he argued at the end of the show that college is a waste of time. College is not just a trade school. An educated populace is essential to a democracy. There's a reason trump said he loved the undereducated.

We've watched Bill Maher for years and his "interview" with Chloe Maxmin last night reached a low for tastelessness. It was our introduction to her and we found her bright, accomplished, and full of promise and grace. In addition to interrupting her frequently ("Are rural people racist?" then interrupting before she can answer,) his "quips" about Maine residents living in trailers and drinking moonshine in such poor taste. Under assault with these statements (check her frozen facial reactions) she maintained composure and conducted herself with grace reflecting an appreciation that she was a guest on his show. For him? Shameful. Such an elitist.

I found her bright and full of promise also. But this is a comedy news show, not NPR, and those were just low hanging fruit jokes meant to appeal to lowest common denominator types, of which this country is obviously filled. As a stand up that has toured the country for decades, I'm sure he knows not all rural people are idiots, and I'm sure she's able to deal with off color jokes (and rural prejudice) as a state senator.

Maher show is ALWAYS funny and I enjoy it tremendously... Question: When M.Tafoya suggests making businesses manufacture their goods in a certain location, isn't that SOCIALISM and is she suggesting that the government mandate where companies can produce their goods ? ? ?

We shouldn't support slave labor for moral reasons, and we have made laws to prevent Americans from supporting exploitation and buying from our enemies. I don't know if you have ever heard of Cuba or Iran, but Americans have been prevented from doing business with them.
@joeedge5762 жыл бұрын
@@sandyunderpants4376 I must not have made my point clear, and for that I apologize... Yes we shouldn't support countries that employ slave labor... You're right... Yes I know Cuba and Iran have been put on a list that precludes American companies from doing business with them... But American business is allowed to do business with China, and they have the biggest internment camp in the world right now... It's easy to talk the talk when it's a small unimportant country with no economic clout in the world, but apparently it's a different game when dealing with an economic behemoth... We need to either put up or shut up about this...

Hi Bill, just wanted to add a couple of talking points. On abortion can we meet in the middle, can I at least get the first trimester to find out 1 that I'm pregnant and 2 what am I going to do. Most women don't even know until they are 6 weeks. Also, we had GROWN adults ( cough, cough) acting a damn fool over a mask and a shot. Shouting how they had their rights, and here the government is completely taking away the option. How many more babies are going to die, yes this option babies will die. How many more children will be put into an already drowning system? I applaud Michelle for adopting, but why are so many people going out of the country to do so. There are more than enough children in our own system that need to find their forever family. This show hits a little different for me.

Which question? The racism one? What a racist is defined as is different to different people. Ask if someone is a racist and one person could say they are and another would say they're not. To some people a racist would have White Only signs and not let people of color into their place of establishment, to somebody else, not promoting the person of color over the white person would be racism.

She has just as much a right to utter her opinion than anyone else, including you. If you don't like her politics admit it, instead of resorting to nasty juvenile comments.

I certainly don't agree with all the things Michele Tafoya said, but she is really on the ball. As for Maine - no place is perfect - but the people there are, overall, extremely reasonable people. Not surprised they could make progress on the GND. I spent covid year 1 there hiking and exploring.
