People don’t seem to understand why he’s calling Gold the “average” rank. I think he’s referencing the fact that gold contains the largest percentage of players compared to other ranks.

yes, but it also has the largest skill range out of all the other ranks...like people that are just gold because of decent mechanics, people tht dont have the best mechanics but communicate and work well with others, and people that are good at both but dont consistently get other teammates that will do either of the two. I think its easy to call gold bad or average because ranks with people that are not good are always going to be overshadowed by those people. Also people like this guy who probably have never been in gold will not understand it from their point of perspective; it really isnt that simple or avg at all...

Alex Palm I don't know. I've queued with friends in Gold and am like how was it so hard for me to get out of this? Players can't hit anything. One thing I've realized in high plat(2900+) to diamond is you will get at least one amazing ADC per game that you never see in gold and below. I'm talking about Mcree's who will 2 headshot you every time you're in the wrong place, widows who will headshot you if you peek off in the wrong corner every time or are wandering around by yourself. These are players who probably have the mechanical skills to be at a higher skill rank but for different reasons are not.

Gold, in my opinion, is above average mechanics and mediocre game sense. Plat is mediocre game sense, above average mechanics, diamond is excellent mechanics passable game sense, masters is excellent mechanics, decent game sense. GM is excellent everything and playing meta characters on top of that.

Nxno MMR. I got a smurf and leveled to 25. Played comp and placed plat. Next season I played with my friend who is silver and went 2-8 in placements and still placed plat. All about mmr

Well, I see quite alot of switching to deal with certain things in both my games and in other’s games. But sometimes it do be like that when you ask a DPS or healer to switch to something better for the situation. They may not leave the game but they will probably throw or be unable to play their hero effectively even if you ask them for a select type of hero rather than one specific hero.

depends on the day really. they do switch within their role most of the time. Which is what most coaches recommend mind you. To het good at your hero you cant flex every game. The problem is once you start flexing youll be stuck in flex because the matchmaker is more likely to give you teammates that have the same role

"HOW IS THIS PLAYER GOLD?" - Here's how: 1. Performance-Based SR doesn't work. (Especially for Main Tanks/Main Supports.) - Unless you're playing 2 ranks higher than your current SR, you're not going to climb out of Gold/Plat very quickly... It doesn't stop smurfing at all. It attempts to determine "skill" based on comparing how good your numbers are to everyone in your rank (so, you might be a great Dva, but if you're not hitting high damage, high elims (which isn't your job, but most Gold/Plats do it anyway) etc you're "bad" in the eyes of the game). 2. Player variance - Between Gold and Plat (1000 SR) you have 60% of the total player base (according to Blizzard's own stats). That's A LOT of players with varying skill levels (especially around high Plat where you have players who've decayed from Diamond/Masters). 3. Unlike League (and other similar "hero based games") you cannot solo carry unless you're playing at a far higher level than your current SR is. (And even then, it's hard - It's usually why a lot of the "Bronze to GM" challenges pros do fail at around Plat.) All it takes is 2 (on average) players to be playing badly in order for you to lose. That's all. Amongst so many other things. I guarantee, if this player got into a Diamond 6 stack team, and played Main Tank for them, he'd easily stay in Diamond or climb even higher.

If bronze to gm players quit around plat, it means they got carried to gm in the first place. Plat and diamond is very easy to get out of if you’re actually good. Sick of excuses that people make for being average.

@@abcdefg508805 Sure, if you're playing at a Master or higher level, it's easy to get out of Gold/Plat, but for the average player who's steadily improving, getting past Plat is the biggest wall... Not only do you have potentially 3 years worth of past MMR weighing your account down (It's why you often see players hard stuck in gold on their mains easily hit and stay in Diamond on their alts), but you also have the performance based SR system punishing players based on the performance of other players in that rank (A good tank player can make tonnes of space and won't be gold damage, but if the average gold tank player has high damage, you'll gain less SR because "you're playing worse than other players in your rank" statistically) AND the myriad of other shit you have to deal with in ranked. (Toxicity, throwers, bad/uncooperative teammates, one tricks, smurfs etc) Whenever I make these points, so many people bring up the "you can climb if you're good, stop making excuses" argument, yet... No one seems to have any opinion or thoughts regarding the actual issues I'm outlining. Do you genuinely think comp is "perfect" as it is?

Harry Stringer The matchmaking system is lopsided for sure which is why there are a lot of people in diamond, who don’t actually belong there “aka gold player alt accounts who get better placements”. Being a decayed from gm is an excuse washed up players make for being back to diamond. If you decayed, you gain significantly more sr as you win so you get back to your real mmr, and you’ll only play against people at your original rank. If your account decayed from 4000 to 3000, you would still have to play against players around 4000. The only difference is, with each loss, you lose 5 sr, but you gain about 75-100 sr each win until you get closer to your original rank.

Here's some more nuanced advice, since Sty covered the major gold-level problems. What I'm noticing in general is that you do the right plays for winning fights, focusing targets, and respecting abilities, but your higher-level decision making and gamesense is lacking. You generally do a good job respecting ordinary abilities, but you don't track and save your bubble for ultimates. You know who to target and call out for focus fire, but you don't see when your team is down players and the fight is unwinnable, and you call for people to keep rushing into a lost fight. That macro-level gamesense is what's going to get you to rank up. 4:50 - If you're trying to do the "reduce buffering" workaround here, I believe you actually have to hit "Apply" after turning it off, then turn it back on. 5:35 - Getting caught on map geometry. Unless you know the map by heart, just swing your field-of-view over to the doorway for a split second to see where you're going. 6:07 - The minimum jump angle was too low for you to hit the Ana, so it was basically a waste of time / cooldown. If you're scared of sleep dart, just watch her left hand - it has a startup of .5 seconds, vs your .2 second reaction time, so you can just jump past her when she activates it. 6:40 - You recognized too late that it was unsafe to chase. A better Orisa would halt you into the team and you'd get shredded. This engagement is also a time when mixing in melees would have helped you, since running out of ammo was the reason that Lucio got away. 7:00 - Good time to use the ult, but the execution was off. You had jump pack up, so leap into the air and get behind the tanks to try to knock them into the pit. Their Orisa used fortify way too early there. Especially since our Hog got succed into the pit, knocking the Orisa in would have been a great equalizer. 7:23 - Questionable jump, since you just got stuck on the doorway. Probably would have been better to save the jump to do extra damage inside the lighthouse. 7:35 - Your indecision costs you here. Either stay on the point and stall for percent, or get out and avoid feeding. Here, you feed after they cap the point. A rule of thumb I use is that if I'm a mobile squishy, or have some damage mitigation, I stay on point. If I'm a tank with no damage mitigation left, or something like a McCree with no mobility, I just get out of there. 9:33 - Bad aim on jump pack. Also, despite what Sty says, meleeing that landing is not correct, since there are two targets. Mixing in melee does not affect your overall single-target DPS unless the target is armored, so against two targets, just using primary fire as you land is optimal. 10:17 - There was no way anyone could have healed you there. Disengaging was correct, but be more aware of your supports positioning in advance. You did hit "I need healing" once, which is great, but hit "need healing" more and say "heal me" over comms less, because one indicates where you are and the other doesn't. Saying "heal me behind" while hitting "I need healing" is optimal, but can be tricky depending on your keyboard layout. I have 'need healing' on 2 and push-to-talk on a side mouse button. 10:29 - When he pops overload, you should be mixing in melees on him. Melee damage is only reduced by 10% against armor, while your tesla cannon is reduced by 30%. This is in addition to the ammo-saving effect of mixing in melee against any single target (like you did against Orisa in the first fight even when her armor was gone). 10:34 - Obviously it's great to tell your teammates that you can't bubble the bomb. However, two full seconds passed before you started to say it, and D.Va bomb has a 3-second timer. That means by the time you finished speaking and they processed what you said, there's less than half a second left before the bomb goes off - not enough time to act on the information. Ultimates are really hard to build reactions for, but ult-tracking is the best way. If you knew that bomb was coming (and you should have), you could have reacted immediately OR even saved your bubble for it! 10:40 - Ult Economy! You've won the fight, so take some damage from Torb's molten core and get free ult charge for your healers! You can do the same thing with a YOLO dragonstrike or even a B.O.B. - dip into it to give your Zarya free charge and your healers free ultimate. 10:58 - You just saw Orisa halt on your screen, so say "Orisa no halt" instead of telling your team to watch out for it. 11:10 - A better Lucio would have gotten behind you and knocked you off the edge after you dropped down off that ledge. 12:20 - Interrupted your reload with a melee. If the genji had decided to pop in and fight you 1 on 1 (crazy, but it is gold), he actually could have killed you since you had no ammo and no bubble. 12:25 - On this map, you can escape through the ceiling with your jump pack! There's a big hole right in the middle of it leading to the roof of the lighthouse. 12:29 - Your healers are still coming back from spawn. You can position yourself just outside the side door facing your spawn so Mercy can fly to you when she gets around the corner. Also, hit the 'need healing' key. And there's a mini behind point you can get. 15:20 - As Sty said, you should have recognized it was time to back off already. Here, you take a health pack instead of giving ult charge to your healers because you haven't seen that the fight is lost. 19:53 - This is the moment when you've demeched D.Va and it's time to jump straight back out. You would have lived there. 21:42 - Mix in melees here against the armored Orisa 26:24 - The reason I don't like that bubble is because not only should you have expected the D.Va bomb, you had a potential earthshatter to block as well.

So thank you for analyzing me and all the constructive comments! Little bit about me: got placed in low silver, immediately dropped to 1.2 k, then didnt play comp for a long time. Next season I climbed from bronze to silver in 2 weeks. Now Im on 2.3 k (this game was the first after a 6 game losing streak(with 3 leavers btw)) I hope Ill climb to plat soon This was the first game I recorded, I dont really record often, because I get low FPS then(normally 70 FPS, woth record around 50) And btw Im just learning Orisa

A big thing with main tank on Gold/silver is that you can't usually get away with that level of aggression. You touched on the lack of follow up, and that's definitely accurate. This guy had AMAZING healers who took care of him when he was pushing in, and that let him go big a lot of the time. On the flip side of that, you'll get healers who just want to play the back line and won't come out of it to heal at all, so being aggressive is just suicide.

I’m a 3700 tank main and I made the mistake of doing placements on a second account as main tank and I got placed 2200. I found it much easier to carry myself out as off tank and I’m now 3300 climbing fast to masters

I main Healers in Gold and a big problem is Communicating. All a Rein or Winston has to do is say “I’m going in.” And I’ll jump on them. But if a Rein charges in and I’m in the back healing DVa he’s already too far for me to help and going in is suicide because they’ll switch to attacking me. We both die and fed enemy Ult. No healer wants people to die. I can’t count the times I’ve had to waste Nano on a foolhardy Rein when a juicy NanoBlade or NanoBlossom was right there.

This is spot on. I play diamond on PC but tried out console recently and started at silver (I have _terrible_ controller mechanics; main ana on PC but won't even try her yet on console). Main thing I've noticed at high silver (presumably similar in gold) -- DPS players are actually decent, but lots of really bad tank and healer play. I like to flex, but I realized (main) tanking is extremely hard because you don't know if your healers will heal, or if your team will know when to follow you, etc.

Christopher Loverich exactly, the kind of plays I’d do in masters wouldn’t work in gold because I’m assuming my team understand what I am doing and will follow up but they don’t which, in turn, makes it seem as though I’m feeding. If there’s no comms in gold you’ve just got to play a super defensive main tank and pray that your team will follow up

My two tips you gotta note of. Stop reloading so much. There are times when you hop in, zap, punch, get cover and reload with 68 out of 100 available. Also be more conservative with your ult. Use that thing when it is team fight or to contest with your health. When you are contesting and hit 100 health, ult and you gain 1000, prolonging that contest. Go join some six man lfgs, people need good main tanks like you.

Sty, I may be entirely wrong, but I feel like you have a very outdated idea of the level of all the ranks. I think you have a very season 5 perspective, because you've been defining the ranks as such since then, there has definitely been a genuine skill creep in all the ranks since then, it would make sense that in 2 years the level of the average player has increased, right? I agree that this guys was real good for a gold, but I do think you're selling the entire rank short on your overview at the beginning, I think most people in gold know how to and do combo ults.

That is not my perception on competitive mode, here's an example i got a friend who is legit only playing arcade mystery hero/no limit/total mayhem, not caring or trying 90% of the times just screwing arround, and over the last 6 seasons he has gone up from 2900ish to 3300ish, and that is only doing his placement games...

I just wanted to add that you want to punch right BEFORE you land. The landing animation cancels the melee animation and you can start zapping away faster with a lot of initial burst damage ( from landing the jumppack and melee) to melt heroes with 200hp or less.

-accessing high grounds and taking forward positions before the fight/at the start of the fight allows you to cut off the front line/back line as they funnel through to the point, while also keeping your jump to disengage to your team. this potentially creates opportunities to get damage that leads to follow up, or a solo pick. it also forces their dva to use her movement cooldown to contest you on the high ground, as they did not have another hero with great vertical mobility to contest you - jumping in horizontally, with little arch, leaves you committed into their team for a longer period of time than if you jump in with more vertical arch. this is because the cooldown starts when you start your jump, meaning that if there is significant hang time before you land, you will have access to the cooldown more quickly after engaging onto the enemy. jumping to a high ground that is close to the enemy puts you in an equally threatening position which ties into the first point, as you can more safely engage on them if you are on the high ground first. you did use some vertical jumps, but there were times that horizontal jumps were used to engage the enemy where you were not quickly focused down and punished. this would get punished at higher levels and as you climb. this is why it is important to think about how you want to engage the enemy while maintaining resources to get out -brawling on the point can be effective in the sense that it gives the enemies something to focus on, but you only contested the enemy widow once (between a fight) on ruins. you often opted to fight the rein/lucio (often pressuring but not confirming kills on them) when you could have given your own widowmaker free reign by putting more focus on either their widowmaker or their dva who could pressure your widow. this does not mean hard engage onto them and only attack them, but put more focus on looking at these characters and positioning around them, rather than sticking purely to fighting a brawl, which you could pick reinhardt for. strategic target focus is important in giving your team consistent advantages in fights. if their widow started to win the duel or land more impactful shots causing a snowball, it would largely be due to your target focus -the primal boop play on the first point was a great example of taking a position in which you could cut the enemy off as they walked through an area. you could have taken positions like this (such as on the bridge in point 3, allowing you to focus the backline as rein funnels his team into the point) that would have allowed you to be in a more immediately threatening position -the reason you were able to output such great damage was because of the cleave damage from winstons tesla, versus the grouped up enemies. rein hammer does more DPS, as well as area damage to punish grouped up teams. you were not putting the majority of your focus on the one squishy that was easiest for winston to pick on first point (genji) or on third point (widow), but instead fighting centralized onto the point. these are cases where it would benefit to be on rein as he has greater reliability in blocking damage, as well as greater cleave potential (sacrificing mobility to contest mobile squishies like genji and widow, which you were mostly focusing during cleanup) there were some other notable changes, but people seemed to cover them in popular comments. these were some things to think about from my perspective as a winston/main tank main

Keep grindin. You can carry SO FUCKING HARD as a tank. Even when your team is derpy. You just gotta clean EVERY action up. Realize when you made a bad jump/pull/charge/hook/whatever. You play clean. You climb. You might get unlucky and get 3 losses in a row...but if you play CLEAN, and can get your team to regroup (sometimes, if they wont you just gotta work with what you got and try and shake and bake).... Youll win 7/10 matches in the long run. Edit:youll know you are playing clean when you start winning matches you think were lost in the past pretty consistently. When your stats look like 20-5 or some such. Win or lose, you did your job, mostly.

Uhhhhhhhh your tangent on gold is accurate to a point. As an ex gold, I had game knowledge and basic mechanical skill for my hero (zen) and I agree I became better with him in plat and beyond (current season high 3.2k) but not by a huge margin. The skill gap between gold and plat is way smaller than people say it is. And plat to diamond is a bit more difficult. Diamond is hilariously difficult compared to plat and gold. (Xbox player in case that matters)

Sty is wrong. After you jump pack don't land then punch them, you punch them right before you land. If you do it right it doesn't always show the punch animation and you get massive burst damage with the jump. This guy needs to work on his jump packs.

Dva players at your rank are horrible, and will just keep trying to get their mechs back instead of either dying to point or jumping off the map. You can even let her re-mech on point, then instantly de-mech her again for free ult. It wins you games easily. Of course, the hard part is trying to get this into your teammates' heads. Even in diamond I'm screaming "LEAVE HER!!!!" and they still kill her lol. Don't kill baby Dva, you're basically helping her in 90% of the time if you do.

I’ll tell you the reason why he’s 100% still gold. It’s because has to fill roles in other games. Period. Just because his Winston is diamond level doesn’t mean his Healing or DPS is. What can he play in a game with 5 DPS characters on your team? Or 3 tanks and 2 DPS? Until we have role queue, we will forever have diamond Winstons in gold filling heal roles because everyone feels entitled to playing DPS. Make ranked role queue a separate game mode so that people who don’t want to wait in a queue don’t have to do it.

2:35 This isn't really right tbh. While Plat players do understand certain things about team comps like playing Rein-Zarya, Winston-D.Va and Orisa-Hog, that's basically the only thing they know. And it's not every single game. I still see so many games with double main tank or weird tank compositions in high Plat and low Diamond. Also, in high Plat/low Diamond, players still don't understand which support fits which tank line on which map. There are supports playing Moira when you have a dive comp on Numbani attack first point. Of course Moira won't be able to heal the Winston and D.Va once they dive in. Also, people will still play comps that don't really fit the map. I'd say there are quite a few players that know this, but also quite a few players that don't. And that's high Plat I'm talking about. I'm assuming in low Plat, you'll see even more games with weird tank and support combinations that don't fit the map. I don't think this knowledge is really necessary to get into Plat, seeing how many players got there without knowing it. But I would say if you want to get into Diamond and stay there, it's probably benefitial to play tank comps that fit each other. Though even in Diamond players will still play supports that don't fit the tank line well.

What's so bad about double shields or double main tank? It can easily work.for example rein can shield while Winston is off disrupting when the fight breaks out or double shields for a bunker comp. As last night as there is one shield it can work.

@@DanielFlores-fo1ee Well, it's certainly worse than running any main tank off tank combination. Main tanks create space and off tanks secure it. If you run double main tank, you have two heroes creating space and don't have anyone to secure it. This makes it a lot easier for the other team to take back the space. D.Va secures space by following up the Winston and DMing him. If you have a Rein instead, the Winston has a way higher chance that he doesn't survive diving in the higher you go in ranks. Zarya's job is to bubble the Rein so he creates more space and she can bubble herself to secure it. Also Hog can secure space by hooking enemies out of position, thus removing key targets of the enemy. On top of that off tanks deal a ton more damage than main tanks and get more elims. So they also secure space with their presence. They're high hp heroes that deal high amounts of damage. If you trade this for another main tank, you lose the ability to secure space, deal less damage and trade it for the ability to create more space that you're less likely to secure. I agree that double shield for example with a Bastion can work. But that is because the presence of the Bastion secures the space instead of an offtank. Also Winston-Hammond can also work very well since Hammond can to some degree also secure some space. But apart from that, running one main tank and one off tank will always give you an advantage over the other team assuming the players are comfortable on those heroes. In lower ranks it can work out but the higher you go and the more coordinated the game gets, the less it works. And in high Plat or low Diamond, it can already lose you games. I think at this rank people should understand that running two main tanks isn't a good choice. Main tank is the least mained role, so I doubt it's two main tank mains whenever I see it. It's probably just players that are filling and don't know that much about team comps.

As a Winston main, i totally get how this player is on gold. In this game he wasn't a good winston, he just had worse opponents. He doesn't jump+melee combo. His jump management is awfull, same for his bubble management and his positioning. His game sens is gold lvl too. He doesn't use the Map geometry as his advantage. He is playing "selfish" Winston, and that's the worst kind of Winston, he doesn't have any plan when engaging, he doesn't play around his team positioning. He is just doing his own thing and nothing for the team. Each main tank action as a propose for the team. He has zero ultimate tracking. And that's what makes him gold. Winston bubble is like Genji deflect, it's your best ability and you only us it when need or to create space for the team. I Can go on again and again. But this coaching from sty wasn't what this player needed. Sty should have talk about bubble management, décision making, if actions benefits the team and why, to make the player understand what a main tank/Winston role is. Edit: a Primal winston is a wasted ultimate sty, Winston should get nano when he as Primal but he should NOT use Primal during nano. You go on with nano super aggressive , and right before death After nano you pop Primal to cause more disruption and increase your survivability

General rule is to only submit losses for review. He also could have focused more on their genji/widow. His jumps were often reckless, jumping onto the point into the whole team without scouting or around a blind corner into a hiding reaper (i.e. he was often jumping blind / not knowing what he was jumping into). 9:39 Actually, it's better to melee in the air right before you land, so the landing animation on your jump cancels the melee animation. You still get the melee in, and if you do it right, it should look like you smacked them with your left fist on the way down. 80 Damage burst, pretty powerful to get a target low quickly

WS4F_Haiden Nah he’s stuck in a rank because of him not because of teammates. Throwers and leavers don’t happen every single game to say that it’s because of teammates that he’s in that rank is stupid. If you are good you will climb.

Really bad Analysis - these are my pointers if you actually want to improve Your main problem is mechanics: • Jump arc - Aim your jump before jumping, learn the difference between a flat jump and an arc jump • Tracking and Reloads - Winston deals very little dps so you need to make sure to increase your zap time. Secondary Problems: • Soft vs Hard Engages - Because you r in gold, which have no comms, always soft engage unless your team is alr in. (In this map, jumping on the parapet where widow usually sits is gr8 for slow zapping and threatening angles) • Cover - Your cover use is decent, for long range poke fights, but pretty shit for short range ones. Winston's best cover angle is from above, because of his vertical mobility as well as his bubble that is great when right on top of the enemy. The rest of the problems that you have like cool down usage and jump-punch combos are not too glaring, but it. is needed. to get to diamond. Most plats can't do it well. consistently anyways.

To explain the punch or cannon is the punch causes healing to start lower than cannon but it's not anymore dps. If you hit the land then cannon is fine unless its an armoured target then you want to punch to help your damage. The phrase its a little more faster damage... Its faster damage not more damage.

It seems kinda cheap that you dont want his best clip. If he sends a clip that isnt his best, he can probably identify a good deal of the issues himself, being that he has played better in other matches. Why would someone want a youtuber pointing out obvious mistakes that he already knows, instead of looking at what he can improve upon that maybe isnt so obvious to him? Yeah, its harder for the youtuber cause he cant rely on the cheap and easy mistakes for content, but it leads to more meaningful critiques.

This gives me hope. I play like this guy a lot, I can for sure see some of the mistakes that I make and I can see some of the things he doesnt do that I do. My placement games were a roller coaster, won 5 lost 5 first 2 wins in a row it put me at high diamond/low master, then I lost some and won some but ended up high gold almost plat and them I just fell super hard. Playing with randoms in gold is so tiring, multiple games where its been 2 guys never changing or the team throwing/falling apart. Yet whenever I get a win, we roll over the other team and I feel like I'm playing quick play. I'm trying to not get discouraged but God damn it's hard.
