I'll say one thing about this review, it gave me a new perspective in overwatch's character design. Yahtzee is right, what the hell was I thinking... these characters have cookie cutter personalities up the ass. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Blizzard always had that comic-book-ish artistic style, but with everyone on the internet licking their balls for their "originality" I got oblivious to that fact
@ComicMan98 жыл бұрын
I think that's a bit hyperbolic, but I agree for the most part. If you take the game by itself. The comic books and cinematic trailers add a fair bit of depth to the characters that you wouldn't get just by playing the game. And while it shouldn't be counted for Blizzard, some of the comics people make about the characters gets you to appreciate the characters. Now if we were to compare it to Battleborn (just for the sake of the comparisons in the video and in the comments), Overwatch characters are easily more polished. Battleborn characters are all "wacky and totally crazy" generic Gearbox-style characters, and not the good ones. I personally like Marquis, but he's just a narratively-dumber version of Sir Hammerlock. Orendi is just a Borderlands Psycho enemy with magic, Shayne + Aurox an edgy teenager, Isic a stereotypical homicidal antagonist, et al.
@lodestarrobot8 жыл бұрын
I think their cookiecutter personalities help them stand out, when you have 21 characters (and counting) it's important for them to not only play completely different but to be completely different characters to stand out. Which I think works well
@vlorenzosoleri8 жыл бұрын
ComicMan9 yeah, it wasn't my intention to sound too high strung; then again we all know how hard it gets to communicate intent on a text comment. I just felt kind of dumb for not noticing something that's pretty obvious hehehe. About your response, Overwatch characters look polished because they are stereotypical, but since they are easily recognizable and distinct it adds flavor to the switching demanded by the game. I can't agree with you on the trailers though, they pretty much show them as they look in game, with a sprinkle of backstory, and I don't think the comic books should count as character development for game characters, they're more like something extra for the fans.
@vlorenzosoleri8 жыл бұрын
lodestarrobot I kinda mixed my response to your comment in my last reply xD but I agree with you, from a more game design perspective it certainly adds a lot when you can relate the character design to its combat style. Again, it's fine to have generic stereotypes in a game so focused on mindless fun like Overwatch, I just felt dumb for falling prey to the hype xD
@timothythetoolmantaylor13938 жыл бұрын
+SrThompson Of course they're generic arch-types. D.VA is a South Korean professional gamer. Hanzo and Genji are honour stricken Japanese warriors, Mei is a Chinese climatologist. Torbjorn is a Swedish Engineer, Junkrat is a Mad Max inspired Australian. You get the point right? Each character is designed off of an ethnicity. It's not a racist thing, they've built the lore around a parallel earth where all have come together for a common cause. There's actually a LOT of lore in Overwatch, there's also quite a few heroes that aren't on the roster yet that are referenced throughout the maps. Also, I've played a lot of multiplayer shooters and none not even TF2 (I did like it) gripped me as much as Overwatch. Not due to hype, but due to the characters themselves, every single one of them I love playing but I'm also impressed by how dynamic they are, especially in dialogue when they subtly talk to each other, which though very subtle is pleasant when you witness it.

Pandering really is the best description I can give when thinking of Overwatch. All the characters fulfill the niche of some archetype that the general population would most likely adore, and this doesn't get any more apparent than the female characters which all fulfill some manner of fetish one way or another. Blizzard really only have themselves to blame for the inevitable surge of Overwatch porn. If you deliberately design your female characters to each represent an aspect of sex appeal to sucker in hilariously predictable male gamers that think with their undercarriage rather than their brain, it is hardly surprising that you get a crapton of porn being made about it.

I miss the loot boxes now, because a regular player was able to unlock all of the cosmetic content they wanted just by playing the game. The early monetization was par for the course at the time: full game sold for $40, full price gave you a few cosmetics, loot boxes were expensive but just enough to make you consider buying them. Now that OW2 is f2p the monetization is pushing new boundaries with the prices they charge for skins, not to mention the battle pass that is anti-f2p.

To not change something and consider your work/audience simply on principle and as a defiant act to feminazi culture is as stifling to creativity and art as blatant incoherent censoring. they imprisons you much the same.

I was so excited for Overwatch when I started reading the story. Diverse characters, an interesting setting just plain built for a good, long campaign against evil robots being controlled by Talon, maybe an opposite side campaign where you work with Talon and fight against Overwatch... the worst part of borderlands 2 is definitely the random gun thing. you complete the game, complete the dlcs, complete the mini dlcs, then complete the game again on hard mode, complete the dlcs again on hard mode then complete the mini dlcs again on hard mode then you do the raid to unlock overpowers 1-8 then you play it again on Overpower 8, the dlcs again on overpower 8 then the mini dlcs again on overpower 8 all while having to stop at various points to go kill some boss on repeat in hopes of obtaining the legendary/rare drops so you can have a decent time at clearing more trash and mobs just to get to another boss to farm them for rares and legendaries.

Yeah, people are very polarized in favour of Overwatch. Sincerely, I think that any freemium content in a game which you paid for is an insult, regardless of its nature, because it affects gameplay in one way or another. Even cosmetics play a role in it - because that way you can stand out from the rest, which is pretty important in multiplayer, where you will find clones everywhere.

I don't see a problem with the microtransaction model that Blizzard has with Overwatch. It's all cosmetic and you get lootboxes pretty regularly. It's just a way for Blizzard to make a little bit extra money and for people to unlock a skin they really want faster. I see why everyone hates a system like Dead Space 3, where half the weapons, skills, skins, etc were available for purchase on release day instead of in the game already..

Michael Morris well you diffenetally see it as that, correct? You get your free boxes and thus you don't pay for any microtransactions. For you, microtransactions don't even exist. You're NOT losing out on content and thus, you have nothing to worry about. The fact that they exist is merely a win/win situation really. It doesn't hide anything behind a paywall, it's easily accessible, and IF anyone wants to just... throw money at blizzard and not only supporting the game's longevity, but also their own personal enjoyment then hey! There it is. In fact, those boxes are microtransactions done right. It's based pretty much on the hearthstone system as everything is accessible and easily so, but you can shortcut your way if you want to.
@shikniwho72158 жыл бұрын
most the time, people only want to spend money on the box during event like Summer Game and Hallowen. Not to mention the upcoming Arcane mode will let you get 3 loot boxs each week if you won those matches.

totally not a spy It was pushed back because it wasn't finalized so to say. Sure I agree Battleborn is harder but if it were as good as people say it wouldn't be doing this bad. It came out too soon and Gearbox sucks at marketing.
@TheBelgianEmperor8 жыл бұрын
While it may seem like Overwatch is for casual players, you really underestimate it. Playing the game myself it happens on Quickplay (not even competitive) where people will scream at you for picking the wrong hero (picking the right one is an essential part of winning). There's plenty of hardcore players playing the game, and when competitive is released later this month, they will have their own place to go, while the casuals can still enjoy the game on Quickplay. In my opinion OW caters to both groups, while for instance a game like CS:GO caters more to hardcore gamers and a game like TF2 tends to go to the casual side. It's a joy to become good at the game, at each of the 21 heroes. It's a game that while it may not look like it, even playing the heroes that aren't as skill based as others, requires skill to both learn the character and the maps, the character on the maps, the counter picks etc.
@totallynotaspy26868 жыл бұрын
TheBelgianEmperor I played easily 50+ hours in the closed beta. I know what the game is like, I played several characters fairly well, and largely disliked the rest. I never got yelled at for not playing a tank or support, but that was when the player base was small. As for battleborn, it was announced first, it's date was announced first, it was first for everything in relation to overwatch. Blizzard saw how popular that initial trailer was (it got like 6 million views or some crazy shit) and said "hey, let's make one of those, but for casual people". And they did, but in the process, as blizzard has done with WoW, Hearthstone, Diablo and StarCraft, they very specifically set up all of their dates for anything significant to line up with anything significant coming from the competition. Battleborn didn't come out to soon, it was assassinated by blizzard. From the start, despite clear differences, the games have been compared, and battleborn has been laughed at as inferior and a ripoff. I'm not saying gearbox is free of guilt, they definitely needed to be clearer with their marketing, but it is far from being their fault alone that the game has a notably small player base.

Well it's an obsolete job, but if you go by Hollywood's idea of a cowboy do you really want EVERY man to solve all their problems with guns and brawn and think of themselves as a wandering loner who doesn't need companions?

Shouldn't the argument be Battleborn vs Paragon and Overwatch vs say Rainbow 6 Siege? Moba vs moba- team based arena shooter vs team based arena shooter. Why was it ever a thing for the internet to decide to compare the two in the first place? They are entirely diff games.....
@UnNuclear8 жыл бұрын
That's true, but they look similar in design if not in gameplay. Colorful cast of heroes? Check. 6v6 shooter? Check. Releasing around the same time? Check. I hate the comparison, but I understand why it happened.
@ComicMan98 жыл бұрын
Paragon is more of a moba than Battleborn, I think. It has the speed of one, there's not easy sprinting, not much vertical space, etc. Rainbow 6 Siege doesn't seem like the same kind of team-based shooter that Overwatch and TF2 are.

Ovewatch is actually only around $40. The deluxe version with extra cosmetic stuff is $60
@Keithyboy16028 жыл бұрын
physical discs and console versions are full $60 and $70 in Australia, where Yahtzee lives, which is a lot for all that Overwatch is
@lobete8 жыл бұрын
There is no way Battleborn is cheaper. In the US, Overwatch came out at $40, which is 2/3 the price of Battleborn ($60). We are expected to believe that the price is $70 for Overwatch in Austrialia but Battleborn is only $65.95 as shown in the video? Yeah, my searching shows the AUS console price for Battleborn is actually $99.95. So still a $20 difference. store.playstation.com/#!/en-au/games/battleborn/cid=EP1001-CUSA01518_00-BATTLEBORN000001 And he bitches that Overwatch sells skins while not mentioning that Battleborn does the same thing on top of their plans to sell DLC. Blizzard is doing free DLC for Overwatch....
@lobete8 жыл бұрын
+900bot AUS Overwatch is not $100 on console. You are thinking of the Origins Edition which is the more expensive version that comes with skins. If you want to draw that comparison, than AUS Battleborn Deluxe Edition is $122.95 for console.
@Keithyboy16028 жыл бұрын
Futrix you can only get origins edition on console, there is no other version of the game for PS4/XboxOne. This may not be true for Australia, but it is for the UK and US to best of my knowledge.
@lobete8 жыл бұрын
Keithyboy1602 I didn't realize this.... I'm really curious about this decision now. I'd bet anything it was a decision by the the console makers having a problem with Blizzard selling the game for $40 on release and told them to do the full price version only for console.

£29.99 on release and never paid any extra via micro transaction, still having a blast. I don't think £30 really constitutes as full price for a game these days.
@peardude89798 жыл бұрын
In Australia it's $70.
@Keithyboy16028 жыл бұрын
and on console, it's £50/$60US/$70AU/etc. the point is its overpriced on console, and it's a bit of a piss-take to then have it include microtransactions. on the plus side, I think maps and characters are going to be free when added, but don't quote me on that
@lodestarrobot8 жыл бұрын
+Keithyboy1602 yeah and game modes, it's free in order to not separate the player base.
@joannawood73528 жыл бұрын
yeah in Australia the price is "fuck you" and i dont think you can even buy the special edition
@Kharnivore20998 жыл бұрын
Keithyboy1602 I don't see any issues when the microtransactions are just to speed up gaining items you can unlock for free, it doesn't affect the game and they are all essentially aesthetic items. Console games are always more expensive, but that's just the trade off of developers having to pay MS and Sony licenses...along with those online charges. :/

you have absolutely no reason to buy loot crates as the game stands, which means in order to make the game FTP you would need to severely decrease the rate at which people level and introduce and fully fleshed out cash shop of some sort in order to support it, atleast this way you everything that isn't cosmetic and the cosmetic stuff is so random as not to really matter.
@falloutghoul18 жыл бұрын
***** If Blizzard gave us "no reason" to buy the loot crates, then why did they include them in the game as a micro-transaction anyway? Because, obviously, the initial $60 wasn't enough to cover the costs of the game, right? And it isn't as though Blizzard has other sources of income to cover the costs of maintaining their servers, paying their employees and utilities, and funding the development of future games, right?
@ourorboros28 жыл бұрын
falloutghoul1 "If Blizzard gave us "no reason" to buy the loot crates, then why did they include them in the game as a micro-transaction anyway?" for the same reason supermarkets have chocolate bars next to the check out. you dont have to buy them but some people will. its not like you need a chocolate bar and its not like you need a skin or a highlight intro. "the initial $60 wasn't enough to cover the costs of the game, right?" its not about covering the initial cost of the game or even server costs, balance updates, content upgrades and so on; blizzard are a company and companies like money, with the state of the games market how it is with idiots throwing their money everywhere ofcourse blizzard are going to monetize their games fully. honestly, if you dont like move towards to microtransactions and over the top monetisation then dont pay into those systems, its that simple.
@falloutghoul18 жыл бұрын
***** Funny how you put the blame on the consumer for the micro-transactions in retail-priced games, when the corporations are the ones pushing them into full-priced games, as was stated in a Dead Space III article that since mobile games have micro-transactions, people will be expecting micro-transactions in their fully-priced games as well. It's that lapse in logic that allows these unethical decisions to be made in video games. You can go ahead and defend these abhorrent practices all you want, but that just means the publisher has you in their grasp.
@ourorboros28 жыл бұрын
falloutghoul1 "Funny how you put the blame on the consumer " well you can blame companies for trying to make money all you like but at the end of the day thats not going to going to change unless consumers begin to express their wants with their money. we control the state of the games industry, a business is only ever going to provide what the consumers want because otherwise that business is going to fail; the ultimate cruxt of the issue is societal, how can anyone create anything truly beautiful if the purpose is to make money, instead of merely being to create something beautiful but this wont be fixed with out a major overhaul of our society which is unlikely to happen. so in the short term as consumers we have to vote with our wallets; support the devs who we think make good products and stop buying into over-the-top microtransaction and monetisation. if you disagree with the loot box systems then dont buy loot boxes, if enough players take that stance then blizz will have to change how they operate. its that simple. "unethical decisions" ethics? who gives a shit? say hello to reality. get over the idea that there are any rules because there aren't any. life is just a series of real world games that we play, most of us dont even realise that we're playing, the computer games publishers of the world are playing a game called make money; can guess you guess what only objective is? eventually this happens in any game, people think they've got the idea of it down and then someone comes along with an "innovative use of game mechanics" meaning they learnt how to be smarter than you play the game better than you. its not cheating, its not unethical, its not immoral, its not anything other than being a better player. so either get better at the game or change it.
