Perfect casting and great acting by Daniel Dae. But the showwriters massively reduced both Ozai and Azula's threat by showing them being defied/undermined and having to constantly talk so much. The agni kai especially makes no sense considering Zuko knew almost no firebending at age 13 and he shouldn't have been able to defend against ANY of Ozai's atacks, let alone catch Ozai offguard and show Ozai mercy. It completely neutered Ozai's threat as the main antagonist, and also showed that Zuko was already mentally ready to fight his father and even potentially land a blow on him.

I'll never understand people who disapprove of humanizing Ozai. 'Legend of Korra' had its' flaws but where it undoubtedly surpassed ATLA is its' villains. Complex characters who I may be not rooting for but certainly understand them. The Live-Action Avatar attempted to dive into fire nation's psyche with Iroh explaining to Aang why are they fighting this war and what drives them. Ozai is no longer a cartoonish one dimensional villain. He's a leader of an aggressive nation who wants to finish what his father and grandfather started. That's why he's pushing his kids hard, this war was fought for 100 years and there are no guarantees Ozai would live long enough to ensure victory. That's why his heir needs to be strong. Speaking of which. Him caring about Zuko, acknowledging his accomplishments is another good addition to the story. In the original, it makes zero sense why Zuko even wanted to comeback and win the approval of someone who clearly hated him and didn't even hide. Here however, Ozai makes it clear that he cares about his son in his own twisted way. He wants him to be ruthless, competent in military strategy and ready to be his heir. That change will also help us emphasize with Aang more when book 3 rolls around. In the original, it's very hard to support Aang in his obsession with not killing when Ozai is clearly an irredeemable monster. This time, his humanity will be a valid point for Aang whose attempts to reason with Fire Lord in the animated show seemed hilariously naive.
@Sheeya97
@Sheeya97 3 ай бұрын
You know what doesn't make sense? To give his son a permanent branding in his face if he still loves him in his own way and wants him to be strong and return as heir. He also wouldn't banish him and send him on an impossible mission. It's extremely apparent that these actions show that Ozai doesn't really care about Zuko. And if he wanted Zuko to become stronger, as in more ruthless (rather than combat strength), then he absolutely wouldn't want him to hang around his peace-loving uncle Iroh. It makes perfect sense why Zuko still wanted to come back to earn his father's approval. It doesn't matter if it was clear that he hated him, that would just strengthen those feelings. You don't seem to understand much about human psychology - an easy example would be abusive relationships? These super toxic relationships where it's SUPER clear that you're treated like shit, but they very rarely leave. Many people in such situations would blame themselves rather than the abuser, and it's the same for Zuko. Ozai and the Fire Nation is humanized through other characters rather than directly by the main villain, although I don't mind that they wanted to bring in more of Ozai but I feel that they failed to hit the mark for various reasons. It doesn't really work when you change a lot of details that contradicts the animated series, and then also try to keep many things roughly the same, you would have to rewrite everything to fit the new narrative. It's the same problem with Azula, one of the most badass villains reduced to an insecure girl, the direct opposite of her in the animation. Zuko didn't even find the Avatar, he just happened to be nearby when Katara and Sokka found him. In the live-action Zuko had mini Avatar statues that lit up at that same time, so logically all the other statues should have glowed like it did when Aang went into the Avatar state at the Southern Air Temple. So that's another detail that doesn't add up, and these illogical details keep piling on. And by the way, Aang is a 12-13 year old boy that grew up among peace-loving monks, and is more or less a pacifist that finds all life sacred. He has interacted with good people from the fire-nation both before he was frozen, after, and even through his past life Roku. He is naive because it MAKES SENSE for him to be naive, and he acts exactly as his entire written character should. In fact, we see through his earth bending training that Aang tries to 'attack from another angle' which is exactly what he's doing by trying to negotiate. It's simply in his nature, and it makes perfect logical sense. " In the original, it's very hard to support Aang in his obsession with not killing when Ozai is clearly an irredeemable monster." - This is just a ridiculous take. Like I don't even know if you properly watched the animated series. You might not have any problem in wanting to kill Ozai to end the war because he is an irredeemable monster, but Aang's character is clearly written in such a way that it would be impossible for him to do so. As the other Avatar have adviced him through their own experience; the Avatar belongs to the world and has the duty to protect the balance by any means necessary. The Avatar has to disregard their own feelings in favour of duty, and Aang as a 12-13 year old boy, whose duty shouldn't have begun until he turned 16 years old by the way, is simply too young and inexperienced to achieve that. This is so clearly written in the animation and it makes perfect logical sense, which is why so many people love the original animated series.

Livia Soprano isn’t one dimensional. There are people that don’t have a point of view to understand. Also a better choice would have been a live action Korra. Older actors mostly in a steampunk city would have been easier to film and allowed more changes and depth than the animation. Aside from writing, I admire the Netflix attempt but not compared to three seasons of the last air bender’s near perfect storytelling. These KZbin character shorts are great. If there is a Netflix season two will be looking forward to more of these.

@@LovedLamb Because narcissists are also human? Do you guys even realize what you’re asking of the writers? You’re asking them to make Ozai bland and uninteresting. This is an adaption, not everything needs to be exactly like the cartoon. If you take the nostalgia glasses off, you realize that Ozai in the cartoon is a flat character with no depth. Which is why he wasn’t revealed until Book 3. It worked well for the animated show, and we had the lovely Mark Hamil voice Ozai. But this interpretation of Ozai is better for live action. He’s still a narcissistic man who toys with his children, but he at least has some love for them which gives him more layers. Now if you want to complain about Azula’s character, I’m all for it.

Yeah but there are theories and canon stuff why Ozai and Iroh avoided echother. first theorie: the time between Lut Tens and Azulon death is to big of a coincedence. We dont know what killed Lu Ten and Iroh is quite about it. I think he want people to believe it was just earthbendders but think he could have been killed by an assassin commissend by Ozai. In the OG series you see Ozai giving a slight smile when he had read the letter.He instantly asked Azulon to be first in line. Azulon said: nuh uh you must suffer the same. But he was killed by a poison made from Ursa to protect Zuko. Via with some untold political manouvering and manufactering fake evidence Ozai became firelord. Iroh didnt cared about the trown much at that point. He really loved his dad to The death of his father right after the death of his son was no coincedence. After that he see Ozai as a lost cause in his eyes not worthy of attention. And this is kinda the worst insult you can get from Iroh. Canon: they hated eachothers guts since they were teenagers. They were competive as fuck but Iroh was not without empaty and compassion. Ozai had none off it mauinly because his father never reinforced those qualitieis in him,. Iroh grew distant and resentfull about it. Ozai gave everything to surpass iroh in skill and intelect but 1 thing he couldnt do anything about Iroh's birthright to the trown. He really hated iroh for it because he thought he was more deserving of the trown,. Ozai had big daddy issues unlike suko he chose to keep those issues. Its funny when you know Ozai had daddy issues you see a few thing that make. 1: every town needs to have his statue where he spits fire because he needs a contstant flow of admiration and he need be see by all times , how he talks to people like his generals are nervous he always needs to up a scale and his phoenix king shit was just a big '' LOOK AT ME DAD. ARE YOU PROUD?! '' Azulon was abusive against his sons but he favored Iroh. Iroh had the Azula treatment and Azulon abused Ozai exactly like how Ozai abused Zuko. When Zuko returned to the fire nation in book 3 Ozai was fake nice to him. Ozai didnt even got that from his father. Azulon never complimented him and he punished him regularly even as adult. (Iroh felt guilty abou this in hindsight to this. (He regrets not being theirr for him in this time period.) But Iroh was the golden child.

Ozai and Zuko's relationship summarized in three words "Get good grades" and I do find Ozai smiling with great pride that Zuko ACTUALLY did the assignment on his own. @@xuvial1391 I disagree, only because I think showing a human side to Ozai just makes the monstrous things he does to his children, to his nation, and to the world even more chilling. He's not just evil for the sake of being evil & corrupt (though the cartoon hints at Azulon's terrible parenting as a source, we just never see enough of Ozai to really understand his motivations). The fact that this version of Ozai actually thinks mutilating and pitting his children against each other is a parenting technique that will either make his children stronger or weed out the weak is monstrous, and knowing he's not a complete psychopath but is in fact capable on some level of realizing what a horrific thing he's doing to Zuko, I dunno... I find it way more terrifying than being ambivalent about whether he cared at all about the pain he's causing.

It's so amazing that in this series Zuko was fighting with his father after all. This is the very moment from the dresser, the scene in the movie is shown better than in the series. After all, in fact, in the original animated series, Zuko never began to fight with the lord of fire. Both versions show the great tragedy between father and son, but more importantly, in the series, the Lord of Fire sent 41 troops along with Zuko. the very squad he stood up for and partly got his scar because of. Even more dramatic is the fact that 41 did not respect his prince at the beginning. A prince who sacrificed everything for them, including his honor. How painful it must have been for him to realize that those for whom he fought considered him a spoiled, hysterical and jealous child! Such a strong scene!
@Sheeya97
@Sheeya97 3 ай бұрын
I disagree on the first part. Zuko not fighting back is vital to Zuko as a character in the animated series. He respects his father and desperately wants his acknowledgement and approval. It's more realistic that he wouldn't be able to fight with the father he respects. If it had been Ozai that spoke of this plan then I seriously doubt that Zuko would speak up against it, he only did so because it was mentioned by one of the generals, and then expected to fight with the general he believed to have disrespected. Zuko still wants his respect and approval and is desperate for it, which is why he is so desperate for the Avatar, and later on why he betrayed the Avatar at Ba Sing Se and returned to the fire nation. This whole interaction is establishing his character, his journey, and future development. I think many scenes and moments in the animation is carefully crafted, and messing with it by changing the details will require a rewrite of everything, which is why I personally am having problems with many decisions made in the live-action. This is just my personal opinion.
@user-px6uh5wi9y
@user-px6uh5wi9y 3 ай бұрын
@@Sheeya97 Okay, I think your position is very relevant. Of course, Zuko was a child who literally craved his father's approval. He was an authority for him, which he could not and would not go against. Moreover, Ozai was much stronger than Zuko. After all, he was the lord of fire! And in the animated series, this is justified. Sometimes a person can fight with anyone except those who are truly dear to him. However, there are young people who are quite good at fighting and have combat skills. And sometimes a person can do something who asks him to do it. Or orders! And Zuko just couldn't go against his father's wishes! His father said - fight! And he was fighting! Albeit forced. But he did it because his father ordered it! That's why he could still do it. Yes, Zuko really thought he would fight against the general. And it's one thing to fight with a general, but it's another thing to fight with someone close to you! But it's not just that. I just mean that this scene is written very well for the series and that it looks quite plausible. I'm a big fan of the canon, but the actors played so well here that you start to believe them. In addition, the series really looks much better than the first movie that was shot earlier. He wants to believe. Of course, there is always something to work on, but this is really progress! The characters are recognizable. Their pain, their emotions, their story. But you're right that Zuko has always tried to get approval and recognition from his father. What else is important! In fact, Zuko was Ozai's son and Sozin's great-grandson. What's more important is that he was also the great-grandson of Avatar Roku! Who was forced to confront his former friend, even if he didn't want to. The struggle of good and evil in Zuko has been since his birth. This is his nature. His inheritance! Yes, in the canon, he didn't stand up to his father at the very beginning, but in the end, he stood up when he caught his lightning bolt. Probably, the screenwriters decided to show the moment of confrontation a little earlier. And even then it is clear that Zuko does it as if forced. It's obvious that he doesn't want to. But he has to. It's his honor! The canon will always be the canon. But I really wanted to cry at this moment! This story has remained in my heart forever and changed my life.

The only way that Iroh or Zuko could defeat him is by lightning redirection, but if the firelord doesn't use it, they are probably dead in 1v1

@@user-kv5tr7we4s m’guy go rewatch the show, I watched the whole show twice 2 weeks before the netflix adaptation came out, Iroh and other firebenders such as commander Zhao and generals of the fire nation have all said Iroh in his prime most likely would’ve been more powerful then Ozai ever was, it was the loss of Irohs son in the siege of Bah Sin Sei that changed his heart, Zuko along with Aang surpassed Ozai when they both gained firebending knowledge from Ran and Shaw who were the first ever true firebenders, Zuko wasn’t even breaking a sweat versing Azula and she was going all out and still couldn’t hit Zuko, before he gained that knowledge she was wiping the floor with him and old man Iroh at once, only reason he got beat by Azula is bc she realised she wasn’t gonna beat him so she turned to attack Katara with a lightning bolt and Zuko jumps in front of it getting hit instead of Katara, I’ll give u an idea on how powerful that firebending knowledge is and how much it boosted their power, Aang before couldn’t fire bend without hurting anyone, Zuko had completely lost his fire bending like COMPLETELY and after they gained that knowledge they both were firebending like they were taught when they were 2, only thing Ozai had on Zuko and Aang even after them gaining that knowledge was his IQ and battle iq/hand to hand, the rest Zuko and Aang have surpassed and Iroh could have surpassed, there’s also chatter here and there in flashbacks of the fire nation comparing Ozai to Iroh not Iroh to Ozai.

Literally when did Zhao or other Firebenders said that Iroh would have been likely to be more powerful than Ozai LMAO. And no, contrary to your deluded fanfiction, Zuko and Aang without his Avatar State never surpassed Ozai in firebending even after meeting the dragons.

The people that are complaining about the show not being exactly the same as the original should just grow up, even if it was they'd still complain. You're just feeling nostalgic. The show is a remake ofcourse its gonna be different. Look how many times they remade Batman movies, theyre all different.

Love it. My only complaint about the original show is how they ruined Ozai in the last four episodes. He went from a Tywin type villain, cold, calculating and ruthless even with his own family if they 'fail him' to a Mad King "Burn them all" type of villain. Greatly enjoyed this adaptation of the character (or rather the version he initially was before the finale).
