I love these inks! After trying this set I went out and bought every color at my local art store. Since the shellac is so hard to wash out I use semi-disposable bamboo pens.

Greta review - thanks! I have been tempted to buy these for sketching, so it's great to see the colours, and how they perform with dip pens. Just wanted to add that W&N have two sets of ink. These are shellack based, and are intended for illustration. They are called permanent, but that just means they are waterproof due to the shellack. However, they are NOT lightfast. So they are great for work that will be scanned, or kept away from light, for example, in sketchbooks. The shellack means they can't be used in fountains.........W&N also offer calligraphy inks. These ARE pigmented and lightfast. Because they are water soluble, they're safer on brushes, and can be added to fountain pens (with care). They're also great for ink wash drawings. So both types are great for their intended purpose. For some reason, i can't find the calligraphy inks locally (Nova Scotia), so have to order them on line, which makes them a bit more costly.

***** Hi Vicki - Great info and thanks for sharing. I'll have to try those calligraphy inks at some point. I think they'd be good to try, especially for washes. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment.

Vicki Wood I’m guessing their calligraphy inks are not the thing to use if you want to do a watercolour wash over the ink. Or it may depend on the paper you use, like if it’s cellulose or cotton based as Ive read this might make an ink bond better and be less prone to “lifting” after drying depending on the ink brand/the maker’s formula. I’m really wanting to draw with ink and then do watercolour over the drawing then maybe draw more ink on top of that. This would be on 100% cotton watercolour paper, either hot or cold pressed depending on the project. Arches or Strathmore Series 500. Anyways, I’m interested in hearing your experience with the calligraphy form of the W & N inks. This ink subject does get a little complicated technically. I’d like to avoid shopping and buying inks that won’t work for my stated purpose. I don’t mind (and kinda like) using dip pens, but my working “style” for this project will be rather fast, using a lot of uninterrupted ink, so I’d like to avoid dipping if possible as well. I’m gonna be switching nibs (pens) throughout the work for this project too, but that’s not important to my question I guess. Any experience you could pass on to guide my intention would be much appreciated. Cheers from Ottawa.👍🇨🇦

I believe that they are water solvable except for the India ink. Haven't personally used them though. I HAVE hears that if you are planning on using them to paint with, it is a good idea to have a palette with the inks and not to dip the brush into the wells, especially if the brush is going into water inbetween. And apparently the water needs to be distilled because there is a chance for mold to grow in the well if contaminated. I've seen that many people using the dip pens also like to dilute to get a lighter tint for the ink colors for ones such as yellow and orange since they are pretty dark straight from the well. I've always been interested in these drawing inks and glad to see a review up on your channel!

Great review! I've had this set for awhile and something I noticed was that the shellac in the darker inks, like the violet and the blue, begins to build up over time. I don't know if it was just my set where it did this, but little specs of built up residue is clearly visible when I made washes. Not sure if this will happen to you or not, but it might be something to note!

BitterSweetNitemare I got a "William" set last week which was the alternate set to these. I had to return them as the shellac in the yellow had sedimented to the point that the ink was opaque and you could see hundreds of little shards of it floating about. The other colours were perfect, but it's put me off getting a replacement set.

@owingsart

Hi Zefy - Yes, I think these work fine in a regular fountain pen, but you MUST clean them out afterward I believe. Otherwise this ink will dry out and clog the tip from what I've heard. Maybe others can verify this. Thank you for the question.

@owingsart
@owingsart 8 жыл бұрын
+zekehooper Ahhhh, yes, the colors are a bit strange with ink sometimes. I mix colors without a second thought, so I can make a deeper red by adding a little green to it. If you add too much green, you'll get brown. However because red is a primary color, you'll need a red color to start with. Try a green and let me know what you think. Thanks - Marty

If you're looking for a deeper red to paint with, Winsor and Newton has one in the William Collection of these Drawing Inks called "Deep Red". I have that one and finds it to be quite bright to draw with(at least when drawing fine lines), but deeper and darker to paint with. So that depends on what your looking for. :)
