Big dogs need a lot of attention and walks. But "not strong" people can take care of them too. As long as they've done their research and get some help from someone else to train the dog if the dog needs it. That is proper and ETHICAL training. Like positive reinforcement. NOT shock training. @@chillyforest69 Absolutely not. They are digging into the sensitive part of the dogs neck, even if it does not leave marks it's not an effective way of training whatsoever. It's behavioural conditioning, not a proper form of training and learning pattern for the dog. Negative reinforcement is not healthy for anyone or any animal, when you give them a positive association with entirely non violent methods like a clicker or whistle, instead of thinking "shock bad" they think "whistle/clicker is good, I want more of this!", without ever using force or threat on the animal and helping it see what is decent behaviour within the home. @@chillyforest69 Yes, dogs have thicker skin. But any dog would rather just have a plain collar or a harness over a collar designed to dig into it's neck when it walks. It doesn't actually contribute to anything besides the design being painful for a lot of dogs, even if you have a tougher dog- proper training goes a long way, there's no positive use for it. Any dog can be trained out of aggressive pulling if given the time and patience, and if your dog is violent for whatever reason and you're using a prong collar to make it stop itself, it just means you're a bad owner. People gotta remember dogs have the minds of toddlers. They need to be loved, nurtured, and conditioned with positive reinforcement. When you shock, yell at, or put prong collars and stuff on your dogs, you're basically doing that to a 3 year old
@striveforbetterhereandnow4 жыл бұрын
Actually, scientists say dogs have the mentality of a 2 1/2 year old; so even younger than you've stated. Now, here's where you're misinformed- prong collars and electric collars are to be used as cues and as a form of communication. People that use these tools "CORRECTLY" are trying to protect their dogs and save their lives. The corrections are done minimally and last a second. They also work immediately as opposed to a year of positive only training- if at all. Most importantly, the "Gentle Leader Leash" that Victoria is using in this video did more damage to my dog's neck than the prong collar ever would when my dog (that I rescued) became highly dog reactive. That leash works for leash pulling only. My dog was a leash puller as well which is why I purchased that specific leash. Now, both problems have been corrected. Yes, there are many poor pet parents in the world. However, this world has even more bad people parents.

I adopted an 18 month old Doberman X Kelpie rescue 10 years ago. When I got her home we went for a 4 mile walk in a neighborhood where virtually every home has two dogs. Her new scent set every dog to bark. I pulled gently on the leash, said "ignore" and gave her a treat when she did not bark in front of the next house. Ever since that day, she has barked an average of once a month, when the dog next door looses his cool and goes apoplectic: she goes out and barks 4 times which he understands to mean "shut up". (I keep the "leave" command for when I don't want her to touch something). She's the third dog I have trained that way, and none of them have been barkers.

Not but growling and being assertive. He just stand between them, or wont let me walk closer to someone. If he deems someone as bad and they are away from me when I try to walk closer, he just dead stops, will not move. And if he doesnt wanna move, you are not makng him. Any other time on a leash?? They’re so obsessed with “controling” the dogs. Dogs are your families. If you’re keeping them on your roof, you choose to have a friend. These animals have their own entity, their own soul. You don’t own them, they are never yours. They only belong to themselves. Now as a family, it is your responsibility to treat them with kindness and unconditional love. I work at a pet store, and have for almost 8 years now, and I have NEVER seen any prong/choke/shock/e collar used "correctly". The owners are almost always angry and frustrated with their dogs, yanking on them or yelling at them and not even praising or rewarding when the dog finally does what they want it to do. Just the other day there was a guy in with his dog, who had on a shock/e collar but the guy had forgotten the remote. The dog was sniffing things and not listening to its owner, and the guy was just muttering at the dog about how if he had the remote he would be "lighting him up", which honestly just disgusted me. if these training tools are going to exist and be used by pet owners, then there needs to be some way to keep the awful/ignorant people from getting them. I don't agree with them at all, honestly. I'm with Victoria on this one - i think they all belong in the trash :T i also love how balanced trainers always try to say that purely positive reinforcement training "doesn't work" on aggressive/reactive dogs. bruce peterson a shock collar is the same as an e collar. They both are used similar when used correctly. A shock collar is the same uncomfortableness as leash pressure. It’s an uncomfortable feeling used temporarily. It is no different than when Victoria turn the dog around for pulling, you introduce an adverse feeling and pressure to the dog for incorrectly acting. It doesn’t ruin the communication or relationship with your dog and ecollars can be used at long distanced, same as using a long lead to apply pressure.
@avivamae51714 жыл бұрын
@@RiceKurry I get what you're saying but shock collars refer to the older style that used to actually give the dog a nasty shock. E collars can vibrate or give a mild stimulation that causes the muscle to contract the same as a tens device used in physical therapy or like the Medtronic nerve stimulator that I had surgically implanted. There is a massive difference between a shock and a muscle contractions, one hurts and the other doesn't, I have my device implanted with the electrodes sitting right on my nerve so I feel it a lot stronger than dogs would, and even when my device is turned up high where it isn't a pleasant feeling it still doesn't hurt or feel anything remotely near a shock. The reason I point out the difference between the old fashioned shock collar and the modern e collar is because so many people don't know there is a difference and it causes lots of hate towards e collar and people who use them. Sure there are probably some old fashioned shock collars out there but they are definitely a rarity and are very different from a decent, modern e collar. I personally don't use an e collar on my current dog because I didn't know the truth until somewhat recently and because my dog was incredibly easy to train and naturally focused but I understand that not everyone has such an easy dog like I do and so I want them to understand all of the tools and not be scared away because they have been misinformed like I used to be.

Using a shock collar correctly causes harm. Using the other tools you mentioned correctly does not. See the difference?
@demon_doll4 жыл бұрын
Yup! Sucks that a well known trainer is telling people these training tools always cause harm. Prong collars can be so safe and effective when used properly.
@dixiewhite26984 жыл бұрын
Yep. My dog gets excited when she sees her prong collar, because she knows that means WALK TIME! If it was used incorrectly she would be fearful of it because it hurt her, but it does not hurt her because it's used correctly so she loves it because it has a positive situation connected to it.
@kawachholtz4 жыл бұрын
@SobaInu Prong collars are not sharp and are designed to evenly distribute pressure across the entire neck. Actually the way they're designed allows you to use much less pressure on your dog than you would need to with a regular flat collar. They're much safer than some other training tools people commonly use and cause no lasting damage to the animal when used appropriately. If it is hurting the dog it is being used wrong.
@demon_doll4 жыл бұрын
@SobaInu In the wild, a wolf's pack leader will correct the other wolves by biting. A prong collar that is fitted properly (at the top of the neck sitting right underneath the chin, not on the trachea, and not too tight nor too loose) will deliver a small "bite like" pressure on the dog's neck, when doing a correction. Causing no pain, only a bit of pressure. A correction should not last more than just a second. Most people I see using prong collars aren't using them properly, which yes can cause harm! Only people that know what they're doing should use them. I cringe when seeing poorly fitted prongs. Remember, research is key! Dogs are not humans. They are animals who came from wild animals who go 100% off of instinct. Although dogs may need us to feed them, groom them, teach them, and care for them otherwise, they will always be animals! And when they are treated as such, they will always be their happiest! :)

Prong Collars don't teach obidenace or good behavior. Instead they teach your dog that disobedience leads to pain or discomfort. Prong, shock, and choke collars are all ineffective ways of teaching a dog how to behave. They don't teach your dog to respect you or listen to you out of their own accord, but rather because the only other option is to be in pain or discomfort. If you cannot teach a dog how to behave without harming them, then you shouldn't own a dog.

westsiberian laika for my part, we need a hunting dog with a wide range though were gonna try to get her to focus on moose and deer, but she gotta know how to handle bigger animals as well for her safety due to earlier dogs being scratched by bears and such. really active dog with a impressive nose, she is still just about 12 weeks but damn when she smells something good she is off ( due to it being huntingseason she has gotten to track some left over from a moose, and man was she good at it) definitely gonna do some nosework with her, and btw i really recommend anyone with an energic dog do some nosework with smells. its really easy to get started and most dogs love it, because its simple and challenging for them. really stimulates their brains and tires the beginner dogs fast - extremely fun exercise for you and your dog (though really experienced dogs might be able to do 10 easy rounds at most and like 5 challenging, not at the same time)

E collars aren't even meant to curb aggression like that. Aggression naturally falls away with discipline, and e collars aren't discipline, they're a tool to achieve it... you can't just strap an e collar on a dog and say it's disciplined. Maybe it's because I've watched so many dog training videos, but it baffles me that people get dogs, don't set boundaries, lets aggressive behaviors go, and then get shocked when their clickers and e collars don't work. It's much more work, and there'll never be a tool to do that work for you.

It's just so neat for me to see Weimaraners just cause they are so rare, but that's the kind of dog we had growing up. He was a nervous hyperactive mess at times but no dog I've ever known was better with kids. He appointed himself our nanny, and put up with a lot of mauling. He watched over us, let us ride him like a horse, dress him in clothes, sleep on him etc. When we went swimming in the lake, if my little sis got out too far for his taste, he'd pick her up by the bathing suit and carry her back on shore. One day a large neighbor dog jumped the fence and attacked me while I was riding a tricycle down the street from my house. It would have been a lot worse if our Weimaraner hadn't smashed through the window in the front door and came running to my rescue. He was only 6 months then, not full grown and didn't have the shaggy coat of the other dog to protect him, but he just kept throwing himself between us, and refusing to back down, till the bad dog ran away. Then a short time later he was back laying in the sandbox with my baby sis making mud pies on top of him. That wasn't the only time he came to our rescue either. I still consider him my model for a good dog.
