Food, bedding, and such are a steady expense that can be budgeted for. It's the unexpected vet bills that you really can't prepare for as easily. I love our four pigs, they make me happy and soothe my anxiety.

I also recommend using a kiddy pool, a giant bin, or any other diy cage to save money. Also I recommend tractor supply or any farm supply store to get bedding and food.

kiddy pools and bins are not going to be suitable for piggies

Great vid Scotty, thank you. We're so lucky to have a non-exotic vet who actually knows a lot about piggies where we are. They see us immediately when needed and are not far away. There aren't any exotic vets nearby. Actually, there aren't many vets here and the ones that are in my area have long waiting lists to register. The world needs more young people to be vets, especially exotic vets specialising in guinea pigs! 🙂

Fleece: if you have a cheap thrift store near you, keep an eye out for tied fleece blankets! Those typically are two layers of fleece, cut into them and now you have double of what you need fleece-wise to then sew into smaller liners. That would also then easier on washing machines, and if you need to pay for washing then you can stretch out the laundry days further by just switching out the smaller liners as needed. Also for waterproof backing, look into mattress/crib protectors and also waterproof pillow protectors. sometimes folks start tossing them because they’re changing bed sizes for their kids. But those can be cut up as well and utilized to provide extra water resistance at the bottom, in case you’re layering.

When I had 2 piggies, I found out that pet stores charged way too much for hay. I found a farmer not too far away and got 1 bale of hay for $5! That lasted a loooong time!

This is my third time reatching this video. Made me realise im potentially overfeeding my pigs veggies as i think my budget for 7 piggys is about £20 to £30 a week, my girls have 3 shallow cat bowls of pellets filled to the brim and my 2 boys have 2 (mostly so wen theyre bein testosterone bossy they can still eat as i create multiple food zones so they always feel safe) they dont fight but they have food guardin moments sporadically. i find this helps. Hay i know is fine i get the biggest box i can get delivered because i dont drive from a local farm which i have the rule if they cant all hide in it its not a big enough pile 😂 They love it. Im moving home soon and thinking of addin making home made enrichment toys, fleece ect. as a hobby for my piggys this helped me with ideas while makin sure my piggys are well looked after. They currently have 3 tiers 3 super soaker layer on the bottom(incontinence bed pads), 4 large liners, 5 bath mats and then pee pads, beds and cosies ontop... thats alot of washing 😆 One well made liner i ca change regularly may be a better option for me i will let u guys know how it goes. Ill still let them have some noodle mats in there house area they do find them cosie and there comfort and health is priority to me 😊

The horse feed store told me I can buy a bale and they will put it in 6 bags. Only problem I don't have the storage. Bags are large. But its a better deal.

One tip; make your own laundry detergent and put some vinegar in the machine with every use. I've been using it for years for all my laundry, no chemicals or perfume and it barely costs anything.

I saved on my girls home when I first got Harriet and learned and kicked the store cage for the midwest cage and I upgraded twice when I used C & C and now have both my skinnies in a 2X4. Saved on hay from tractor supply, but I also like Small Pet Select and Amazon had a sale for 30% off for subscription and bought 1 st and 2nd cut. Love putting my pellets in treat balls and they love eating out of them . Oxbow non soy is what they like. Love Nationwide, thank you Scotty and I let Nationwide know who recommended me! I am fortunate that my vet is exotic and also has a hospital and does boarding. Veggies are my biggest expense, but try to keep a variety. I use fleece and love the plushpiggie! I also use bath mats ans pee pads of different sizes to help with laundry. When you have skinnies, you do double as they do more pee and poop more.

I don't use fleece. I use training pads. The washer at my apartment isn't always available or working. Going to a Laundromat is way to expensive.

Thank you for breaking this down because my girls are FAR more expensive than I ever thought going into piggie ownership! May I ask if Aspen needs to state kiln dried? I only buy kiln dried pine for there large litter pan with LAGuineaPig Rescue hay rack, but I’m interested in trying Aspen. The rest of there c&c cage is fleece thanks to what I learned from you 😀

This reminds me, do you know how piggies love to waste pellets, I came up with a clever idea so they don’t waste them anymore at our house. I’ll have to send you a picture.

Hey Scotty, this is Mike. Hey, I took your tip here a while back and was getting oxbow adult guinea pig food from Petco which I can't stand those people but I would have them give me the online price. They would fight me every time but now there's no discount on the online price and I really really love and admire the quality of oxbow. I tried to look up where I could maybe buy a 50 lb sock like on Amazon or something. I can't find it. Can you give me some tips? Thank you. I got nine piggies in the house and they love their. Timothy Hay and oxbow pellets and carrots
