One of my fondest childhood memories is being without power for 11 days because of a huge blizzard in the 70's. We had to bring in snow to melt by the fireplace so we could flush the toilet😂We roasted hotdogs and ate cans of soup for days😂Crazy good memories!

When the power would go out in the winter, daddy would send us out to the “tater house” and we would bring in a big bunch of potatoes that we had grown over the summer. We would wash them up and dry them and he would then wrap each one in aluminum foil, bury them in the hot coals in the bottom of the fireplace and just let them roast (for what seemed like for-EVER!). There was a LOT of potatoes in that fireplace because there were seven of us; our parents and the five of us kids. Those potatoes were all we were going to get to eat that night so everyone always ate at least two. When he finally scooped those potatoes out of the fireplace, we would each put ours in a bowl, split it and slather it with butter and that’s what we would eat for supper on the nights the power was out in the wintertime. YUM! Best baked potatoes I’ve ever had in my life, to this day! You always seem to bring back the best memories for me, Janice! I just want to thank you for that, so much ! ❤🥔🧈🍴🧂

The scene of Andrew playing the guitar and Sarah watching and listening to him brought back fond memories of my brother playing his guitar for me when he was teaching himself to play. Oh how time has flown! I'd like to see a video of other precautions and procedures you have in place elsewhere on the homestead and what type of natural disasters may or may not occur in your area. Glad the power wasn't out too long for you guys. May your week be blessed ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Janice, Thanks for the video and the positive attitude through "changing events". My husband, son and I live in PA, in a flood zone... We thought we were ready last year when we got flooded: generator fueled by propane, oil lamps, hand pump, you name it: we had it. However, the flood got so high, it took the generator, the pool, 9 cords of wood, hand pump, and, small detail: the mail box. Either way, I'd be interested in knowing what brand of solar generator you are using. If we want to replace ours, it's over $4,000. Thanks again for sharing your daily lives: your family and yourself make my day and put a smile on my face!

An emergency preparedness video would be great! I always loved it when we had power outages. We were always prepared and also had a wood stove. Of course, I don't have that luxury now in my little condo. My house is total electric. I'm 65 and live alone with my cat. However, I do have lots of blankets, quilts, down comforters, a stash of candles, a Jackery battery, flashlights, kerosene lamps, propane, butane, and charcoal grills, and plenty of food in cans to quickly make a meal. I have fond memories of the blizzard of '78. I had graduated in '77 and was still living at home. My sister was a senior in high school. We were snowed in for a couple of weeks! Precious memories! (Probably not for my parents! Haha!) I hope we get to watch you make your cinnamon rolls some time. Blessings.

Just over a week ago I had a 4 day power outage, luckily I have 2 generators, one for shed (shop) which has 2 freezers and a fridge and 1 for house which has 2 freezers and 2 fridges (I have these and store frozen goods for extended family And my 6kw solar system and 10kw battery normally cover the power used, unfortunately as I am connected to the grid, the solar and battery shut down for the safety of linesmen doing repairs) So 4 days and over $260 in petrol it made a huge dent in my $1100 pension for the fortnight. I am happy to see that you coped well with your outage and carried on as normally as possible
@teresaryan495611 ай бұрын
We also have solar and connected to the grid. When power goes out, we have a switch that puts us on solar only so we can work off of the battery, with no risk to linesmen. It might be worth looking into. Hope you're having a good day.

If you lose power for longer periods, how do you run your water pump and appliances? How do you cook? If you have a generator, why didn't you use it? My older model stove and oven do not have electronic ignitions, so I can still use them when we have a power outage. Looking forward to future cinnamon rolls and yogurt videos.
@ozarkfamilyhomestead11 ай бұрын
(from Shawn) We have various backup systems like you mentioned, but I'm not going to get all of that out and set it up for what appeared from the beginning to be a temporary issue. If we had been hit with an ice storm or something suggesting we were faced with days without power, then setting up the generators to power the freezers, getting out the propane stove, etc. would have come into play. I don't want to put gasoline into a generator unless I know I'm going to use it for an extended time since I don't want to store it full of fuel.

I’m just wondering how much for a generator running off natural gas and how much for a pump to run a well? My parents had to install a well. Then they would fill the washing machine and two bath tubs full to flush the toilets. Us kids kicked in to put a generator run off natural gas to run the well and appliances and lights. Thank goodness we have 4 siblings to split the costs. Thankfully my brother in law new had to install and run the pipes. Before, they had gas powered generators but you had to keep filling them up every 8 hours. My Dad is 83 and my mom 73 years old. We set them up in a hotel, but they had to keep driving up the mountain 3 times a day with gas cans to refill the old generator that barely ran the fridge and freezer. Best investment we made was switching the well and new generator to natural gas Thumbs up! Love all your videos!
