I had these in Shreveport,La., with my Brother about 25 years ago, the little restaurant we stopped at was a Mom and Pop restaurant, I ask him if he would show me how he did this, he was so kind and let me go in his kitchen and taught me his recipe and showed me how to cook them. , he was about 70 yrs old and was so proud to teach me, because I was in love with them, I bought a dozen to go.. and he also gave me tips on how to reheat them, in a hot oven about 5 minutes, and they taste just like they just came out of the deep fryer.., so glad your making and sharing., God Bless

They do have some resemblance to beignets, but in my opinion, they have a different texture. The Ozzie Rolls are more like a fried sweet yeast roll. Melissa and I have enjoyed beignets in New Orleans several times and we love those too! We think the best come from Cafe du Monde. Delicious! He came out on stage and said, “I’ll be your performer for the evening. “And he played for three hours. Glad you enjoyed the concert here in northern Virginia! My mom was a great cook and made bread & sweet rolls all the time. When we were home from school and she was making bread, she would save some to make "Dough Gobs". She would stretch the dough a bit and put it in melted shortening. Once cooked, we would but butter and maple syrup on them. Let me tell you, it still brings a smile to my face when I think about how delicious they were. Her mother made them for her and her siblings and my mom continued with us. ❤

Those look so delicious! Very similar to what my honorary grandmother called "fried poofs". She made an enriched dough for cinnamon rolls, but she would always take a portion of the dough and set aside to make the fried poofs while we waited for the cinnamon rolls to rise and bake. She would roll the dough into a rope about an inch in diameter, perhaps a little more. Then she'd cut the rope into short pieces about the same length as the diameter of the rope. Drop those in hot oil and roll in cinnamon sugar after removing from the oil.

I grew up on Fried Dough. Mom always saved some dough from her bread making to fry up our yummy treat, fried in several inches of oil, and always in the cast iron skillet. I believe the idea of fried dough came from the Eastern Europeans who lived and worked in the coal mines, where my family lived and worked. It is call Langos, from Hungary. The rest of the fried rolls are going into the freezer as fresh bread does not last long. This recipes makes a bunch for sure. My son lives in Lorton VA and when visiting him I have enjoyed Ozzie Rolls at several of a group of restaurants in northern VA called Great American Restaurants. I believe the rolls were first served at the Best Buns location. I think all 18 of the restaurants in this group now serve the rolls. We always get Ozzie rolls as well as a dessert that they feature. It is a chocolate waffle served with vanilla ice cream. Next time you are able to eat at one of these restaurants, be sure to save room and try the chocolate waffle. I enjoy your channel very much. My Uncle Butch used to make fried biscuits. I now make fried biscuits for my grand children & great-grandchildren & they gobble them up! 18 year old granddaughter is going to take over making them now. But I'll still teach the littles to make them. Gotta try your fried rolls!

I live in NoVa (Northern VA) and we absolutely love Ozzie Rolls. Thanks for sharing the recipe. There are quite a few Great American Restaurants - Patsy's, Randy''s, Best Buns, Mike's All American, Sweetwater Tavern, Coastal Flats, Silverados, Arties, Jackson's, and Carlyle's. They are opening a new one called Stupid Good BBQ. You are correct, each restaurant has a different theme and offer some of the same items as well as their own specialty items.

I don't think I have your patience Tom, but I love watching you make them. My daughter is observing and she is going to give it a go. They love their Newfoundland fried dough called Toutons. It was passed on by the Irish that settled in parts of Nl years ago. Its served with molasses. She will try next time with your honey butter. Anyway it was fun to watch and they certainly look delicious. Thank you

Hey Tom and Melissa! I just bought your cookbook. It was fun to see you in Northern Virginia...where I live! We do have several Great American chain restaurants and they all serve Ozzie Rolls, but I don't think they're something that is typically associated with NOVA. Did you see J.T. at Wolftrap? It's such a great venue!

I was waiting for Tom to rave about the wonders of Wolftrap! But I also love that he so enjoyed the bread at Patsy's. I'm definitely a fan of the community bread basket at any one of the Great American restaurants (Sweet Water Tavern is my particular favorite)
