As far as I understand, Steve-o Irwin brought awareness of animal life. He became a national treasure. We loved him - we still love him. I actually have an action figure of him (Night Rescue) still in the package. PETA's angle has always been to segregate us from wildlife or hypocritically send the message of animals being victims - Irwin saved many animals. So fuck PETA.. Steve's heart was always in the right place and I will always respect him and his work. "Have a look at this little beauty!!" 💛🐍🐊🐢🇦🇺

To go after a DEAD man who dedicated his life to animals and people learning about animals is all kinds of low. Irwin was a god damn Legend. People learned more about animals from him than anyone else...and it looks like his son might be willing to be as crazy as he was lol. I love it. He's also the spitting image of his father holy crap. Official statistics released by Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) through freedom of information requests, PETA's shelter killed 94.8% of all animals they took in from 2007 to 2011 - a total of over 10,300 animals. According to the article I read PETA employees kill 84% of animals in their custody within 24 hours, clearly making no effort whatsoever to find any solution but the slaughter of mostly healthy pets. PETA are evil hypocrites.

@Sandcastle • oh yeah, I'm not a fucking idiot, I know that all shelters put down healthy animals. But apparently no other shelter in Virginia had a rate above 70% during the same time period. They compared 9 other shelters in Virginia to PETA's: only 2 of them had a rate above 50%. A newer article mentions PETA's 2014 rate is 81% and references that "In some prior years, that rate has risen above 90 percent." Seriously, it's not hard to find this stuff online, so don't just accuse me of bullshit because you don't like what I'm saying.

I once watched Steve Irwin crying over a small lizard he found on the side of the road while traveling to do his show. The lizard was burned in a brush fire and was dying. It is still one of the most powerful things iv ever saw on television. Anyone that says Steve Irwin did not completely love and respect ALL animals, be it in the wild or in captivity has no idea what they are talking about. RIP Steve, we miss you.

Conservation biologists all over the world fight against their local governments, corporates, hunters etc to make sure animals are left alone. And Steve taught us that. Take your self righteousness and your peta and tell this to pesticide companies who's sole purpose is to find more and more efficient ways to kill rats, lizards, mosquitos and cocroachss and other agricultural pests. What about the millions of dollars the Irwin family has generated for conservation and all the money they have used to buy land so the animals habitats aren’t destroyed. PETA has gone way too far this time. The Irwin’s take animals on tv to teach people about conservation and how to preserve it for the animals. I’m a wildlife science major, and one of the first things we talked about in Intro to fisheries and wildlife class was how PETA’s policies, if carried out on a mass scale, would result in rampant disease, starvation, and suffering, as well as many possible extinctions of certain species that require human interaction to recover from population decline. PETA really doesn’t know wtf it’s talking about. Steve Irwin did handle animals a lot, but the benefits of making people care are so great, it’s a negligible sacrifice in comparison.

@Nick Fletcher. i'm no wildlife expert, but there are critically endangered animals that if not for the efforts of wildlife preserves would've been hunted to extinction by poachers years ago, the northern white rhino being the most well known of these. although with the last male northern white rhino passing away last year, the species will go extinct once the last 2 remaining females pass away

Rather than shooting problem crocs, he relocated/rehomed these crocs into areas where they wouldn't be problems and wouldn't be at risk of bullets. He was also a strong environmentalist. His fortune allowed him to purchase large areas of land all over the world which he basically turned into privately-owned national parks - sanctuaries.

He also started the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital which has been extremely hemlpful especially since those wildfires started. Most crocs on agricultural land are shot but Steve introduced the idea of catching and relocating them to the public. He inspired many modern zoologists and environmentalists to work with animals as kids. He had many captive breeding programs which helped save species all over the world. What did PETA do: 1. Steal kids pet bunnies to kill because "they would rather be dead than in a household" 2. Freeze and kills hundreds or even thousands of dogs and cats and try to cover it up. 3. Release invasive species back into a lake because "all animals deserve to live no matter where they are"

They don't. I talked to a board member once when we were both at a conference. Everyone was at the pre-conference mixer and he commented on my leather pants so of course I sat right next to him and challenged him on PETA killing 90+% of the animals in his shelter. He bet me $5000 to the charity of my choice that I could not prove it with a mainstream source. We then got to talking about PETA's stunts. They are under the mistaken impression that there's no such thing as bad press. They do the stunts to fundraise and access hollywood and DC. I told him that every single one of my friends want absolutely nothing to do with PETA because it's such a fake org. When I got home, I emailed the article from the local paper that blew the cover off their slaughterhouse. He admitted that I proved it. No, the charity of my choice did NOT get that $5000.

That is a very level headed and balanced view of this situation. Something that is a bit rare on the internet! I do get PETA'S point about not exploiting animals but it feels like they are exploiting the Irwin's fame for their own purposes in this particular case. Like you said I don't think we should discount the benefits of getting people interested in conservation even if it means that some animals will be exploited to accomplish this. It is a complex debate, and I would agree that in this instance PETA seems to be reacting emotionally rather than engaging in an intellectual debate on the issue.

Not at all. Whatever complex behaviour we evolved to socialize and put our emotions into, these social mechanisms are for people and we're not even sure how to handle that properly. Animals get eaten alive and are played with for fun by other animals They have no consciousness for the most part and there's nothing evil about animals killing another animal, that's nature - It's killed and be killed out there and we come with our "harrassing" and "Exploiting" when someone's holding an animal for EDUCATION. Everyone's a victim, even a fucking snake - yeah, stop celebrating the guy that has the balls to jump on a FUCKING CROCODILE, focus on the poor exploited and harrassed crocodile. We have gone mad with empathy and pity and that makes us miserable, weak and this whole peta thing is ridiculous. The "sensible" people compromising everything are not much better.

Not only to pet owners, but to animal shelters and vet clinics. Vets and ACOs have testified in court that they were told by peta that they would find great homes for the animals they took after they were spayed & neutered. All lies. The animals were euthanized in the peta vans and dumped in dumpsters before they crossed the state line back to VA. Anyone who volunteers in animal rescue hates peta. I'm in VA (the state they're based in) and I've dealt with them first hand. And I'm part of a group of volunteers who pickup animals in in poor areas and drive them to rescues in areas with better funding. We're not paid for the time, fuel or wear and tear to our personal vehicles. Peta pays their employees and they use company vehicles fueled with company funds. So, yeah. He wanted us to appreciate all creatures but to ultimately leave them be and protect their homes ,he also raised his children to love and respect all animals. That's a legendary legacy he left his children and to us. Why shit on a great man when most of us will leave this world never to be remembered, never doing anything really worthwhile, when this man is now a true legend known for a heart bigger than the world and big balls of steel.

Your level-headed, nuanced approach to various subjects is in short supply these days and it is incredibly refreshing and impressive. PETA is a prime example of initial good intentions and activism that shits in its own bed. Their early work against laboratory animal testing, crafting the Animal Welfare Act, bringing awareness and positive change to the abuse of animals in film, etc. was excellent and commendable. But then, for whatever reasons, they began devolving into a fanatical organization that lost all sense and perspective. Keep up the great work, you lovely bastard; really looking forward to seeing you and Mozza returning on Catch Up.

Bluberry Feminism is very relevant today, if more nuanced than before. Not to say that everything that is promoted is right, but to say that societal prejudice doesn’t exist is false. As a guy, I can very much see why feminism is important.

Feminism is not relevant today, you dont have to be a feminist to belive in equality or human rights. Feminists ignore the male gender, infact they keep speaking of males as if they are potential rapeists just for being males. Great way of makeing little male children grow up hateing themselves. Strange how femnists are all up in arms when a man kills his wife, but when a woman kills her three children and herself, SILENCE!! Strange how they want equality but they dont want to be accountable as men. Ohh so a man raped a 14 year old with his wife, he gets 6 years but she gets 1 year, where were the outrage then? No fuck todays feminism, these feminists talk about how men do this and that, yet they dont have the balls to protest in areas that are being controlled by islamic beliefs.

Isolated incidents are not indicators of the general view of society- extreme things from all groups take place from all sides of the political spectrum. We all deserve love. All of us. PETA needs to get fucked. The double chinned flabby cunts need to remember what Steve Irwin said about people being more interested in and curious about the animal world when you get them excited about and emotionally invested in them. Cause obviously rn very few if any people give actual fucks about animals these days. Most people are paying attention to Kim Jong Un or Trump or other political things while we loose over a few thousand species of multicellular organisms every day. Every marine and tropical species we lose is another medical breakthrough forever removed from our grasp. It’s also another imbalance added to the food chains of the world. All because after Steve Irwin died it became harder to do what Steve Irwin wanted which was to get people interested and curious and emotionally invested in the animals that we share the earth with. Fucking PETA forgot about that. They totally forgot about that. Steve Irwin was a huge friend for animals and through Irwin there was a lot of potential cause people listened and paid attention and enjoyed watching on TV around the world and learning. Irwin thought he was helping, he wasn’t he simply reinforced that he could dominate and use animals as entertainment. At least Attenborough accepts he shouldn’t interfere with them.

@@vfta7906 unfortunately your wrong. And I have people I can explain how things work at work and actually do something to help the animals I do work with. Unless you take the time to fully understand that subject you are talking about please stop. Because some of us go through years of schooling and days and nights we don't sleep over all this. You don't know ... I do know. So I'm not taking another minute to try to convince you. If you want to go after people hurting animals have a start with the chinese fishing fleet's that are doing so much damage. Or the killing or stealing and selling of sea life for profit. We only charge people to see the animals because it's not free to feed and house the animals and we as workers barely make enough to live. We are not forcing them into cages in any way and that's the comment that tells me you have zero experience with the job and just have an opinion. Unfortunately people that are thinking they are helping the animals by taking the shelter down are literally the people that will kill off a species. This is my last reply because I genuinely have better things to do then argue a point I'll never get across to you. Worry about yourself and don't fight against the people that are fighting to actually help the animals you want to help. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean your right. Please go to a university for a while to have the knowledge before you reply.

@@bluewater7211 unfortunately you need to accept that you are part of a system that is cruel. Just ask yourself if you would want to be in their position. Better to live a day as a lion rather than a life as a worm, isn’t that the saying? Imagine being that lion caged for your entire life. Buy you won’t and you can’t, in your eyes you are helping, you were trained and rather than accept your part in the depressing reality of captivity for animals you console yourself with we’re better then Chinese fishing fleets... ok.

Speaking as calmly and as non-hostilely as possible: Even *IF* we accept the idea that having animals as entertainers is wrong, let us also keep in mind what the Irwins were doing. They were showing off these animals to bring attention to the plights of their species. The closest human equivalent would be going off to an endangered part of the rainforest where there's a tribal culture and performing a documentary with them and interacting with them. Yes, it may be wrong to interfere with these people's daily lives, but it's a minor annoyance as compared to the danger bearing down on them. What they did was raise money to ensure that more animals in the wild can stay in the wild. So, their goal and achievements (lest we forget that the Irwins are actually successful) are in parallel with the requests that PETA *claims* to support. The Irwins are financially successful, yes, but they used that wealth to expand their zoo and related conservation efforts, not roll around in a Rolls Royce like a bond villain. Now, speaking less calmly: Fuck. You. PETA.

@Jace The Man so Irwin swam over the ray.. ..so im not sure it could be called "harrassing a ray" certainly it may have been a bit bothered but rays are typically skiddish and would jsut swim away.. that was that planned shot..as the stingray will often lose the barb in the attack so using the barb is of last resort.. often the barb is only deployed when the a ray is stepped on.. .. but unpredictably the ray attacked.. wild animals can do wild things.. but to say he harrassed the ray into attacking is a bit of a stretch.. he was careless for a moment... and horribly unlucky.. i mean the barb hit him in the heart.. it easily could have been lodged in a rib .. just it somehow slipped thru...just terribly unlucky and sad.. perhaps he was a bit eccentric and a risk taker at times... but in no way does/should that damn his character... Steve Irwin is a legend and saint amongst those whom care for the well being of animals and the natural world ..

I’d like to drop a story about the geniuses known as PETA. There was a laboratory in Minnesota that use lab raised rabbits testing shampoos. So PETA in all its infinite wisdom broke into this lab. They broke the rabbits out to “set them free.” Here’s a little info about what w was going on in Minnesota at that time. It had snowed nearly 30 inches and the temperature was -30 degrees outside. Keep in mind that the rabbits were born in the lab and had never lived in the wild. So as PETA did this great liberation that its ran about 100 yards and dropped dead. So take what these nimrods say with a grain of salt.
