We're getting closer and closer to the deadline and it feels like waking up early in the morning, knowing the alarm will go off in 1 or 2 hours but you still got some time to dream on a little.
Also the picture is getting clearer which steps are still waiting to be done so its easier to calculate the amount of time to spend on each step.

I've only been back into the hobby about two years after a twenty-five or so year hiatus. So I'm probably taking longer than some, learning new techniques and implementing them. Since my return to model building, a Tamiya 1/35 Panzer II in Afrika Korps colors was probably the fastest. I'd guess it was about 30 hours spread over a month or so. A Hobby Boss 1/72 SA-2 GUIDELINE missile and launcher was probably similar, only because I tried to camouflage the missile but didn't like the outcome. I tried three times but each version just didn't look right. I did it in solid color in the end. If I had done so from the start, it probably would've taken less than 20 hours actually building it.

Sounds like your already quite fast. I wasnt at all, so this 1 month challenge really helped me a lot increasing my build time. Thanks for the feedback!

Great Video, your right the decals are awesome. Hope you reach your target. My target is to paint a platoon of 28mm soldiers in a week.

Hi Chris, I missed a couple of episodes, and now I am caught up. You have set quite a challenge for yourself, but you can do this. Have an espresso. When I am building, and get “into the zone”, time does not exist. You take a stretch break, and it’s how did it get to be afternoon? I love this about the creative process - or maybe it’s just me.

Absolutely true what you said about the time-free zone, but then reality catches up and i have to manage the two worlds somehow. And exactly there is the reality checkpoint: i want to be able to get more work done in my time-free zones

Normal build length is about 2 months. Some builds take much longer. A 1/48 scale AMT A-20 Havoc build ended up taking approximately 6 months. That build required many new (to me) techniques and some experimental display ideas. It all worked out great, but there was a lot of re-do work on the displays.

Yes the re-do work can become a big part of the build

Second comment (I'm am sure the algorithm will like this). I have limited experience with water based acrylics, normally using Tamiya and AK Real color alcohol based acrylics. My experience with water based has shown two issues (for me). The surface is easily scratched and I have troubles with fine (low air pressure) work. Neither of these is a problem with the AK and Tamiya colors. However, I want to use water based colors more (because of the lack of smell). Can you comment on your usage of these types of paints and how you might have dealt with any issues?

Youre right, these two things are the advantage of laquer paints or similar. With acrylics the most important is to apply them in several thin coats of which the first 2 coats should be extra thin. I like Vallejo model air, but not all their colours are equal. To spray detailed you need to thin them a lot and this always brightens up the colour tone a bit. Something to keep in mind. AK 3rd gen are very nice too, theyre thicker and last quite long. Very nice colour range. You need a big bottle of thinner if you use them. And because acrylics dry fast, flow improver or retarder is very helpful to add. Thanks!

Mhmm yes, algorithm.. mhmm yes, ahem. I am just a beginner but i usually end up spending atleast 4-5 weeks per model. And that is just counting small ones, the bigger ones would likely take me several months to finish. Edit: Also having issues with vallejo satin varnish as it applies beautifully but has resulted in the paint chipping off easily after several weeks. (Much handling was done to it however.) Would a couple of extra coats help?

Yes it would get stronger with a few extra coats, if there is enough drying time in between. however i think only enamel or laquer varnish dries really very hard and protects the best

How long I take per kit is a difficult question. I feel too much guilt if i spend too much time on my kits and not on other things. I like to be as quick as possible. I have never timed myself accurately. I will from now on, just as an exercise, so I can make comments with some authenticity. So many of you other guys are far more professional than me. I have always loved oil based enamels. Not practicle when spraying and not convenient due to drying times. I am a French Polisher by trade, I understand paint well. Flow is important when using guns, acrylic paint suffers when thinned a lot.

The best is a rainy sunday, whats better than scalemodeling on a rainy sunday😄 Oh acrylic suffers from thinning? How is that?

Acrylic has many impurities, each brand ueses similar but not always the same impurities. Good quality acrylics are consistant, but still lose quality the thinner you make it. I like 2 coats of each colour only, the first coat thinned , but the second coat thinned only enough to allow good air flow. For aircraft, one thin coat of primer, usually dark red/brown , then two coats alluminium, or a colour appropriate to the constuction materials of the original aircraft. I use a lot of oil enanmels on furniture, it is far tougher paint, and has a lot of depth of colour. An opinion. Each to their own taste. You know far more about modelling than me. Painting is the bit I don't look forward to. I agree, decals are the fun bit.@@chrisveya7556

Oh interesting stuff, thanks for the infos👌🏼. Im not sure about knowing more about modeling...your way of priming and painting sounds interesting. I might try this as well soon😄👌🏼

I use a dark red brown primer because when I weather the kit, the primer looks a little like rust. I have been heavy handed in my "chipping" techneaques in the past, the red brown primer looks like rust.@@chrisveya7556
