I left the forces and went the fast track route at 28, wife, kids mortgage etc and it is a long hard slog but doable. I worked 3 days a week for a local independent guy and 4 days a week jobbing about, taps, toilets etc to pay the bills. Tightened out belt a bit (ALOT!) But been on my own for six years now and definitely consider myself one of the most conscientious engineers in my area and am proud of the good reputation I've earned. My advice is stick it out, giving up will mean you've wasted your time, keep plodding on and actually achieve your goals. Great video as always, I have nothing but respect for your work ethic. Impressive.

There's alot of people in the industry that look down on people that do fast track courses. For people like me that didn't know what they wanted to do when they left school there's no other option but do to them. I've just done mine whilst working full time and it's cost me a fortune!! Luckily I've managed to get a job in the industry after it. For those looking into it you can just do a boiler portfolio 3 installs, 6 services, 6 gas safety certs. Once you qualify and register with gas safe for six months you can then go back in and do cookers and fires. Just want to say thanks to PB watching your videos on here made me bite the bullet and go for it as I had thought about doing it for years 🙌

Did my plumbing apprenticeship with the local authority in the late eighties, foolishly let my tickets slip in recent years, after mostly working on light commercial and high rise. I’m now having to do an nvq in gas, to get my acs again, nightmare. Costs in excess of 5k, but Brookhouse training in West Yorkshire do an evening course, so it helps offset the loss of earnings, carry on with the day job. Also, a great set of lads on the course, small classes, tend to be older, genuine good lads, varied backgrounds. I have no doubt, that they will be properly trained, excellent tutors from off the tools. Yes, the work experience will be a hit on the pocket, but needs must, and perhaps some of the lads may be a bit green in some departments, but they more than make up in life experience.... Great videos PB 👍👍

Nice one guys. I as a lot will know I also did fast track route. Being ex army, we we were offered all of these courses and credits towards them, it took me nearly 5 years to get enough experience to decide to undertake my gas course as a stand-alone, glad I did, it definitely pays off. I find alot of lads who look down on short course takers are frustrated they had to do the 4 years at college/work as a 16-20 year old, whilst on crap wages. But with out thinking about the fact that if they had been doing a job for 5-10 years on a reasonable wage, to then drop down to apprentice wage to learn when you have house/family etc it becomes almost unfeasible. I know plenty of plumbers/heating engineers who have been through a full apprenticeship, been in the trade years, and are still clueless. Qualification doesn’t mean competence, attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to listen and retain knowledge are what will make a decent tradesperson. Not which course you went on. No one knows it all. We are all forever learning.

Fast track courses are great, but they’re meant for people who already have trade skills/experience. It’s borderline criminal that firms sell these courses to people with no knowledge/experience. How would most people feel if they pay a garage to fix their car and they have no experience of what they’re doing? I don’t see heating as any different.

I’m a pipefitter/welder by trade, I was Corgi registered way back in commercial only, as I was doing factory maintenance at the time. Anyway the factory closed and I came onto the employment market so I decided to do my domestic ticket, even I had to provide a port folio of work to prove I had done work on tiny boilers, even though I was used to working on boilers the size of a minibus. I got sponsored by Interserve at the time, I was very grateful to them as they provided me with what the college described as a very very good port folio all whilst earning. I was lucky but it can be done 👍

It was a great course very in depth, 6hr days and completed my portfolio in approximately 8 months round Nottingham with a local chap. Found a job straight away with a company but bought my own gas ticket this year to gain more experience and hopefully one day go fully self employed, I'm 41 now & love this industry. @@utygvgfcgh098 Hi mate, Your never to old to retrain I found as an adult learner things just sunk in alot easier if you know what I mean. There are colleges all over the country that will offer similar packages, the one I went to & seems quite popular is "options skills" I don't want to sell that college to you so it's best you do your own research on Gas Engineer training colleges, I chose location, price, and reviews over others place's, plus I learnt that they covered more content and offered a look at life visit where you can drop into the college and spend a day looking at what the guys & gals learn, more importantly If the environment suit's you, they can be hot smelly place's lol.the course for gas lasts 8 weeks, which is intensive, short 6hr days, high quality teaching you'll be mentally knackered at the end of the day and expected to study further and talk amongst the other students your learning with. Leadership came quite easily to me so I set up a WhatsApp group and meetups where we still have a chat & banter. After the course the college set you up with a mentor who will put you through servicing and installs of cookers/fires & boilers. Once you've complete your portfolio you return to college for summative assessments, once you've passed that, you get get put forward for your ACS. That's the big one! I'll tell you more details soon I'veran out of time today. Get in touch mate

@@andyrichards4802 Hi Andy, thanks for the info. I have recently been in touch with a training company, they are called 24/7, training. They offered an initial 12 month plumbing/heating course, City/Guilds and NVQ level 2 course then go on to Gas course for 6 months. Mainly doing theory from home then attending there in house training centre in 2 day blocks every 3/4 weeks, based in Wakefield. Charges: £45 per week over 43 months Does this sound about right on pricing to become qualified as a Gas Engineer?
@andyrichards48023 жыл бұрын
@@utygvgfcgh098 yeah that price sounds decent, especially. For the part time course, I remember seeing a few part time course lads on my course, the only issue is the amount of time it takes to complete & having to revise from home as there's no training staff until you attend college again. If that's your preferred option & local college, just make sure you cross the T's & dot the I's, check the contract details for what is included, such as Extra support outside of college, see what qualifications you will be getting at the end of the course, and no hidden charges, like I had to pay a mentor £500 which I hadn't factored in the cost.. be realistic with the expectations, and make sure everything you receive from them is waterproof, completely transparent information. Ask them if they Will cover you in all aspects- meters, cookers, Fire's, boilers, water heaters, and if they train on open vented & unvented cylinders, LPG & Oil, as these are handy to learn and add to your gas ticket once your qualified. Its a really really enjoyable experience learning Gas, just do a ton of studying on the basics covering Reg 26.9 core Gas safety, there's plenty of videos on KZbin, and you can download the relevant manuals to see what is standard expected as a minimum of all engineer's.

I was 26 when I started my apprenticeship, one of the local housing associations was taking on a handful of apprentices for various trades each year pretty much throughout the 2000’s and they actively encouraged older applicants. I was frustrated at my career path up until that point due to the poor / non existent careers advice given at school. For a few years prior I wanted a career change and I knew plumbing would be something I could pick up and learn no problem, I just thought I was over the hill and wouldn’t have a chance. It seemed so unfair to think snotty nosed kids who couldn’t give a crap we’re getting apprenticeships and the older lot who would be really grateful for the chance we’re considered too old. Then a friend sent me the advert for this housing association taking on older apprentices and I’ve never looked back, 15 years later and I’m as happy as ever with my job, love it. Don’t get me wrong there’s been some great young apprentices over the years but I’ve still come across a good amount who don’t know how lucky they are and have wasted the opportunity and ended up jacking it in, boils my piss as it could have gone to an older person who would’ve really appreciated the opportunity.

In my experience 100% of older apprentices I've encountered have made a success of it and thrived and about 60% of 16 year old apprentices have ether made it to the end of apprenticeship or not been an absolute Turkey when they come out of their time. Hi Pete, your video's are excellent, they take me through the 'real' work scenario. But just a quick one for Sam, I'm 54, being plumbing for years, but only gas safe for 6 months, I offered myself for free to engineers, got a couple, but the last one was by far the best (cheers Frank). The best way to learn is to teach, so I've offered myself as a new engineer to help guys like you, as I really struggled to get my portfolio filled. Maybe ask your college if there are any gas safe engineers on their books that would let you go along to an install, for me, you could learn but also do some of the donkey work, ie, coring the flue hole 'at the correct angle', dirty, but good for learning, good for both of us. Also great to see how others do it and to get an idea as to how you could improve the procedure, or learn a few tips as Pete shows in his video's. Good luck, hopefully Pete will continue to put your vid's up here. Oh, also, get some unvented installs, I haven't had one yet but just done my G3 and LPG, thank goodness for the Pete's of this world, watch the video's before you go each lesson......

Fast track courses will lead to diluting the trade. If you want to become a plumbing and heating engineer you should have to do a full modern apprenticeship. I would HIGHLY recommend that you start asking people now.. the sooner you secure a place with someone the better. I know so many people that have done the course in college and in the end, it was for nothing because they can’t find an apprenticeship. I know what you mean with regards to having a job that you can’t do without.. but, remember that although the apprenticeship period is 2 years, you don’t have to take the full time. 15 seconds in and I've laughed already... I constantly call myself a dick head at work... normally when you put that piece of pipe in the underside of a fitting without supporting it knowing full well its going to fall out the minute the blow torch touches it...

Hi PB great video as always, I'm looking to go into the heating and gas industry myself, I do think that £7k is a bit much to be paying out though. Is there a cheaper course? What if you were to just do tests after working with gas engineers for a while which I already do?

Pete's videos never fail to be informative. I particularly like the diagrams he draws to illustrate plumbing concepts. If he's a "sellout", we could certainly use a lot more of them. I think your comment is just daft.
