Thank you again for talking about men's mental health. I struggled and suffered in silence for years. What helped me was when a mate of mine reached out to me and shared what he was going through. Long story short, we just text each other to see how the other is doing. Just that "hey man, you alright?" really helps both of us. I think we as men feel we are weak if we can't just "man up and get over it". Try opening up to a friend and talking. Your true friends will stick with you no matter what. Those who don't you're better off without them.

I started my business last October before the second lockdown, things were going great enjoying working for myself building up a customer base. Once we locked down again in January I hit a massive wave of depression! I normally exercise and do Jiu Jitsu which helps me and levels me out. Obviously everything closed gym wise I couldn’t cope, the van could of sat on the drive I didn’t answer my phone, I didn’t want to reply to customers, everything was an issue even something simple like a boiler service. I opened up to friends and family and talking about it made things better! My advice to the guy struggling is talk, maybe find an activity outside of work as if you’re working all the time you burn out quickly. Great video PB I enjoy watching them 👍🏻

Love this channel. Great content as always love how genuine you are and talk about how things don’t always go to plan and not just posting all the successful jobs. In the real world it never goes to plan but we find a way. Mental health in this trade I find a big issue. Every plumber I ever speak to feel different emotions through their journey in the plumbing trade. Thers always somthing for you to worry about. From keeping pipes super neat. Or flooding someone’s home or even worse. I’ve felt a million of emotions over the years. From feeling awesome bcoz I fixed somthing 5 other plumbers couldn’t and then the next day feeling like a absolute rubbish plumber bcoz my pipe work might not of been perfect that day becoz of the existing situation I had to deal with. It’s a viscous cycle but just stick at it and try not to be too critical on your selves. You are doing great guys. Talk about your feeling and don’t shut them out!

I loved the paraffin torch, my dads got a couple so i might have a look at them. We had a fixed slide pipe bender back in the 80's. Very tight radius, then it started rippling the pipe. We thought it was the bender, but i reckon now it could of been the quality of the copper changing.

@@PBPlumber Actually thinking a bit more - if you hold it closed by winding a few turns of copper wire ( e.g. earth core of some 2.5 twin & earth) round the tabs, then leave a few inches of tail on the wire, you can probably release it by just yanking on the tail to unwind it, so no need to get cutters to it.

Another great video PB. As for the mental health issue a lot of people seem to have I think you just talking about it on these videos tells us all to rethink what we are thinking. Weather it’s a good or bad thing it makes us know we are not alone in this crazy world. And if it’s really bad that there are people like yourself ready to talk to you or make a wish crack about it to ease the worry. Knowing your not alone even on a job on your own thinking of these videos is a good thing. And learning some-think at same time bonus. And stopping fuck ups. So the easiest way to determine whether you have a blocked pump hose/expansion pipe or just a vessel that needs pumping out is by getting it up to 3 bar and letting out the charge in the vessel. If the pressure drops there is no blockage, if it holds at 3 bar you know it’s blocked🙂

I have had one job where a hole in the plate has lead to low pressure, was flats so had a booster pump fitted on the cold before the boiler so obviously the filling loop was after the booster. No demand on hot water it would push into the heating pipework. First and only time anyone on the company had come across it. You've pretty much got to have those exact circumstances for that fault to occur though so it was the second thing to check after pressure vessel.

When soldering apply the heat to one side of the fitting and the solder to the other , if it's a 1/2 inch diameter pipe you need 1/2 inch of solder . Mark your reel of solder with 1/2 inch marks so you know you have applied enough. Same for 3/4 diameter pipe , 3/4 inch of solder etc . Once the solder has run If you get a blob underneath use the end of solder to draw ir away . Just practice with some scrap pipe. We are all still learning

My parents had their 1977 Junkers combi serviced by the same reputable heating engineers every year but in the mid-2000s the system started losing pressure. My parents told the company, they said they couldn't find anything and we kept topping up. Several years in, I got so annoyed that I started doing my own research and my parents got my uncle, an old-school plumber and heating engineer, to have a look. He spotted two things. First of all there was a leak inside the boiler, simply one of the connections to the plate hadn't been tightened properly. And of course the expansion vessel was blown after over 30 years, no more spares available, so he just fitted an external one and the boiler worked fine for two more years. Then it failed the emissions test because the requirements had changed.
@EthanKenna20103 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete! I change those condense hoses on a very regular basis! I got some super long nose pliers (11”) off Amazon with a 45 degree bend on them which allows you to get a hold of the clip and get the hose in and out with ease. Only thing I’ve ever got to remove is the diverter actuator 👍🏼 a bit of grease makes it go in nice and easy 😁

It’s not often I’d disagree with something said by you Pete but I’ve seen at least half a dozen combi’s where the main HEX has pin holed/cracked mainly Worcester because they don’t have a low pressure cut off and a lot of ideal logics because the HEX isn’t usually cleaned out properly during a service. I usually check for this first if a customer is having issues with pressure loss then check the pipe work for leaks. Isolate from electrics, isolate flow and return to CH remove sump cover and watch for leaks.
@martinranson42623 жыл бұрын
Agree seem to be getting lots of logics, easy test is to shut isolation valves for a couple of days, if they can manage with no htg, surprised PB repiped half the system !

@@martinranson4262 I would of thought you would disconnect the boiler from the radiators and do a pressure test to prove the radiators were at fault

Great video PB, glad you started these up again, I've had some dark days with anxiety and being a one man band plumber but I realised it was almost always when I was either working with crap old plumbing and trying to keep costs down, or when customers were douche bags. One day I made the decision to not work for dicks and if I thought I may struggle because of the state of a job I'd just be straight and say it all needs ripping out even though it will be costly, they either agree or get some other mug to do it. I honestly haven't looked back since then. Had the odd twinge of anxiety when a job seems to go South but us plumbers are pretty resourceful chaps (and chapesses) and get there in the end. Little thing to point out though, when doing a new outside tap you can't have an external check valve, regs state that the check valve must be in the thermal envelope of the building to avoid frost damage and failure. I've used those wall plate tubes since I saw one in toolstation about 10 years ago, wouldn't go back to backplate elbows :) Keep up the good work matey.

that’s very true, always nice to feel like someone is on your team

@@PBPlumber I think that's the answer. I have been lucky to work with people all through the lockdown and just being able to share your experience is in some part 'normal'. I think the big stress at the moment is everything you were looking forward to is in doubt. Its like having a map for life and now that map is gone, many people feel lost.

Life is hard but hopefully there’s enough support for the person struggling, talking is a big one in the trade. Self employment is very challenging and with the way people are now a days especially in our trade , hope all ends well ❤️keep going

yes mate we isolated the radiators from the boiler and left it for a few hours, we couldn’t leave it over night as the tenants were elderly and wouldn’t agree to it

hi PB just started as a trade school teacher apprentices seem to love how I fucked up stories I explain like this ........ 2 ways to learn something first way it hurts say step on a nail so equals pain so lesson hear is de-nail timber or flatten nails as you go or break something or fuck it up the pain hear .... is it will cost money /time or the boss /customer will rip into you we watch you tube a far bit depression is always something we pay attention to with the apprentices
