P&O Iona Norway Cruise - Stavanger - Visiting The Swords in Rock Statue for less than £7

This was the first port stop on our P&O Iona Norway Cruise where we stopped at Stavanger.
We have visited Stavanger previously and the last time we were there, we went on a very nice boat trip up to Lysefjord & Preikestolen. As we approached Stavanger this time though, the weather wasn't looking good with rain forecast, so we decided against a boat trip this time, and instead decided to find our own way to the Sverd i fjell (Swords in rock) statue.
According to Wikipedia, The Swords in Rock monument in Hafrsfjord, Stavanger marks the Viking battle of Hafrsfjord when Norway was united into one kingdom.
There were of course, excursions to the statue, but we decided to do our own thing and make our own way there. Although it was possible to walk both ways, it started raining as soon as we got off the ship, so we chose to catch a public bus to Hafrsfjord, the location of the statue. The bus was 45 NKO each, which works out less than £7 for two, so we thought that was OK.
It was only a short ride to the location of the statue. As there were quite a few tourists on the bus, we let them head straight to the statue and went for a little walk in the hope there would be less people there when we got there. Actually, that never happened as there were a constant stream of people arriving and leaving. It was a nice little walk along the edge of the water though.
After spending a bit of time looking at the Sverd i fjell, we chose to walk back to the cruise port rather than getting the bus. It was a pleasant walk back, mainly through residential areas, but it was really interesting looking at all the different styles of housing. It was also noticeable that many of the cars are electric and so even when walking along the side of the roads, the traffic noise was fairly minimal.
There was a nice lakeside walk on the way back, and some interesting historical buildings.
When we got back into the area close to the cruise port, we had another walk around the town and bought a very nice hot chocolate and coffee at a little cafe called "My Place".
After a walk around we headed back to the ship for a sit down and a bite to eat.
All in all, a very nice day and for the cost of two cheap bus tickets, another good way to see some sights for yourself without needing to pay for expensive excursions.

Saw the Swords in the Rock as part of an excursion and did the walking tour. Very nice.

When I went, the swords didn't look that cool from a distance but does look much better close-up!

Definitely worth going right up to them, quite a sight.
