I thought that the energy from ATP hydrolysis caused the conformational change. Where does this energy come into play?

This is a very good explanation. The question I have though: I vaguely remember there is also an Mg++ ion involved, just like in the sodium-potassium pump. But I could be wrong. Presumably ATP can couple to either Ca++ or Mg++, correct? But inside the cytoplasm the concentration of Ca++ is so tiny (0.0001mM) compared to that of Mg++, which is much higher (3mM or so). In other words, inside cytoplasm the ATP must be coupled to Mg++, rather than Ca++. Yet you don't even mention the Mg++ here.
