Great video, it solved my problem of the same two trouble codes plus a P0446. In my case I used a couple of short cuts for the installation of the over fill valve - because my hex head bolts for the exhaust and the e-brake cable were badly rusted, I simply unhooked the exhaust at the two rubber hangers (one each before and after the muffler) and lowered the exhaust that way....and I did not remove the e-brake cable clips, but rather jiggled the gas tank around it.

Great video! I have an '04 Corolla with the P0442 code only. New Toyota gas cap and the fuel filler neck is not corroded. How can I test the overfill check valve before replacing it? I have an air compressor and a Mighty Vac, but no smoke machine. Can I apply 1 psi compressed air at the service port and simply spray soapy water on the check valve to see if it bubles, or is it required to use a bi-directional scanner to command a certain valve to open or close before I can do this? I have a scanner, but it's not bi-directional. What about applying pressure directly to the overfill check valve via the larger hose that connects to it?

I would try all of that what you mentioned but it's too much work. The valve is not expensive. You are better off replacing the overfill check valve since the car is over 10 years old. But that's just me. I too don't have the right equipment but that is where I would start. Also problems could be a leaky charcoal canister and purge control valve in open position. Is this a common source of the p0442? Vacuum tested my canister and valves and those check out fine. Smoke tested as well with no obvious leaks. My leak appears to be tank-side. I replaced worn hoses with closes sizes and my gas cap, but still have the code. Gas smell is very faint.

Thank you for this aweaome video. I changed the valve on my 02 camry to address p0440. Test drive in process. Another issue which i had in this car for a while. When i start the car and let it run for 10 mins, turned it off and when try to restart, it struggles to start again. I then give it about 5 mins and then it starts in first try. Any suggestion where to start.

For the 2nd issue in my post, i replaced the fuel filter but that also didn't reolve the issue. With the new filter on i started the engine and let it run for 10 mins while parked and AC was running. Then turned it off and tried to start again and it is struggling to start. Then waited for 5 mins and then it starts on first try. Any suggestion? There is no CEL

Had the same problem apparently it was the vent that runs along the fill Tube gas fill tube I replaced it and it fixed it. It was all one piece about 2 ft long

Hello, I have a 2003 Sequoia and I got code P0442 small leak. I searched online and most common cause it the electric valve on charcoal canister or fuel cap. I checked pipes for tears but it's all good and low mileage. Does the sequoia also have this overfill valve on-top of the tank? Thanks so much! I noticed a smell of gas in my 1998 Toyota Camry le 4cylinder but that started 6 months ago and there is no check engine light and no trouble codes, anyway I just got under the car by the gas tank on the drivers side and did noticed a gas leak but is hard to tell exactly where is coming from, so my question is this is it possible that it can be coming from the overfill valve even though there's no trouble codes? Everything is perfect with this car except for this leak I know is not a big leak because my mpg is pretty normal but I'm willing to pay a certified mechanic 1000 dollars if I have to because I live in a property that has no level ground and it might not be so safe to try this.

@@awakeandalive4248 hi, if there is no check engine light then you will need a scan tool to check if there is any pending codes. There could be a code but it did not set off a 2 trip detection that will show the check engine light on. You need to try with scan tool first.

Getting the 4000 codes too. My 2000 toyota echo. Fuel canister, or charcoal canister or fuel evap are they all the same thing. Or different names for different things. Guy wants 970.oo to fix it. Also do you know how much it is to fix the trunk lock. Trunk lock broke.

problem could only be on of those parts. mechanic wants to replace them all because he is too lazy to confirm which part is the problem. did he ever do a smoke leak down test? trunk lock should not take more than 30 minutes to replace.

@@panthers559 yea, one of the hoses that has that really difficult clip to remove was loose. I had to replace that entire hose to be sure the hold was tight. It seems like once that hose is removed , the clip just won’t hold the same again.

Murph Hello, your overfill check valve could have a leak, though my video does not have the P0446 code. It is very hard to diagnose if you do not have the right equipment like a smoke tester. Have it diagnosed at a reputable shop. You would know for sure what problem part it is and not guessing on parts you replace and stop wasting your money. Thank you and please subscribe.

+Murph - P0446 is a vacuum leak. I bet when you open your gas cap you do not hear any hissing. I myself just go this code. From research it's either bad gas cap seal, or VSV Valve on the canister is bad. You can test the valve by applying 9v and you should hear click.

Hi - would you help me solve my problem? 1999 Toyota Camry 2.2L and am getting P0441 error. I've changed the purge valve and the entire carbon cannister. Also changed the gas cap, the idle air valve and the PCV valve. None of this has corrected this code. I have a code reader than can erase the codes, but this one keeps coming back. Nice detailed video. I have a 2003' Toyota Corolla S (4cly) 4dr (Automatic). After having to to get a replacement engine due to bad compression in 2 bad cylinders my car has a new code which is (po420- catalyst system efficiency lower threshold bank 1). Took to shop that replaced engine and cleaned throttle body and codes cleared. Now I have the po420 code along with a another code (po442- Evaporative emission system leak detected? Thank you for this video. On my 2000 Camry I am having P0440, P0441 and P0446. I already replaced the charcoal cannister with a brand new one and still getting the codes come back. I also replaced the valve that is attached to the air cleaner box as it was bad before. Smoke tested it from the engine bay to the tank and do not see any smoke at all. Maybe Im not seeing the smoke because it hidden above the tank at this valve One thing that i do notice is a slight hiss when given enough pressure from the test port side at the engine. Would this indicate a bad check valve?

Nice Job. I was having the same problem on my daughters 2001 corolla and I replaced the gas tank and found that there was a crack in that part. The crack was in the sealing surface of the over fill valve. I used silicone rubber to reseal it and I am currently waiting to see if that fixed it. At least I know that is what the problem is. What did that valve cost to replace? Also, what kind of code reader is that?

replace that first, reset the check engine light. if light still comes back. replace the overfill check valve. to know for sure if it's cracked. you would need to do a evaporative smoke test.

Any way to alleviate this issue without replacing said part? In the rust belt, everything will probably fall apart if I try to remove them. Assuming PU spray foam is fual resistant, can I try to spray in some on top of the valve between the protective cover? Hopefully not affecting the venting action.. the smell of gas is quite strong when I fill my tank above 1/2

I replaced mine today, Florida car, 2000 Avalon. The old valve broke inside the tank, the lower part fell off, I removed the pump and tried to extract the broken valve part, couldn’t get it. If my gauge hangs up then I’ll remove the cushion and fuel pump to remove the lower portion. I could not see a crack on the upper part so I assume the lower part was broken to begin with. Frank

Hello, I have read up on the P0440 code. Yes it could be your overfill check valve that could be bad and have a crack. But you need to also check, vacuum hoses for cracks or unplugged, charcoal canister for cracks, and vapor pressure sensor circuit if working properly. I suggest to take it to a good shop that will do a through Evap smoke leak test. They will tell you where the leak is immediately. You will be wasting your money if you always be replacing parts not knowing if it is good or bad.

Hi, thanks for the terrific video. Question: I get a gas smell outside the car when the gas tank is more than 3/4 full and I've just driven the car, which presumably causes the gas to slosh around in the tank. The smell disappears after the car sits for an hour or two. Does this sound like it might be a problem with the check valve? I've visually checked the tank as much as possible (without dropping the tank) and I've also checked the fuel pump flange under the rear seat for signs of leakage, and I haven't found any leaks. If the overfill check valve is causing the gas smell, does it have to be cracked or could some other malfunction in the valve cause the smell? Can you explain what this valve is supposed to do? I also get a P0446 code intermittently (sometimes I can go for a month or two before it happens), and that started happening about a year before the gas smell started, so I don't know whether the code and the gas smell are related. It's a common problem from my experience. First step is to replace gas cap. If the codes still come up, then replace the overfill check valve. If the codes still come up, it could be the charcoal canister. But it would be better to bring it to a shop so they can do tests. I would rather replace a check valve first than an expensive charcoal canister. Hope this helps.

+masses yozd In my case a smoke test at a dealer correctly identified the check valve as the problem. The dealer cost for diagnosis was $110, but you can probably get it done for $50-$80 at third party shops.

+Fix It Angel Yes, you're in NV. Word is desert living causes this problem frequently. Thx for the vid, makes me think I could do this repair and just pay for parts. Rather than shelling out $300-350 to a service place. Or $150 to a shade tree guy.

How did you know that valve was the problem? Many other things can trigger P0440.

I have the same problem with my 2000 Camry XLE V6. I replaced the overfill valve and the rubber gasket. I replaced the gas cap with Toyota part.The P0440 still comes back with P0442 pending only. There is no leak anywhere in the system. When I open the gas cap, I can hear the pressure hissing so i know there is pressure inside the tank. Both valves at the air filter and the at the canister are checked and working. Could it be the Canister itself? Please help!!!

How did you verify there is no leak in the system, that is what you stated on your comment. You will need to verify the canister is not leaking. Also check the fuel pump seal as well as the fuel filler neck, it has a rubber hose connecting to the tank. Lastly check your small rubber hoses for cracks. But I am 90% certain it is your canister. Thanks for the reply, I checked the fuel pump seal seems dry and there is no sign or smell for leak. The reason I am saying no leak is that there is no fuel smell and all the hoses are intact. And plus when i open the fuel cap I can hear the air rushing in. Is there Vacuum Switching Valve different and separate from Vapor Pressure Sensor on the canister?

hi, i am your long time subscriber,, asking question for first time. how did you findout that there is a leak in overfill check valve, i ran into similar problem in honda civic but doesnt have evidence that is why i am asking. if i put smoke in gas tank and if overfill is bad will it smoke out, what is the diagnosis method, please advise.

sivaraj palanisamy hi, thank you for being a loyal subscriber. Sometimes it’s very hard to see the smoke if the overfill valve has a leak. So I would try spraying some water and soap to see if it bubbles to show there is a leak.

Fix It Angel Excuse me for asking for an actual explaination. "I just know the codes" doesn't tell anyone anything about your diagnostic process, you could just as well be throwing parts at it.

Exactly man, you just don't want to throw parts at it. That is why I said bring it to a shop. Wouldn't you rather spend $$ to confirm that is the problem? The shop will use an Evap smoke tester to locate the leak.
