FES opening works because the music elevates the visuals. That's what makes it an opening. That's what makes all openings So it not being here is disappointing.

Agreed - P3P is the most generic anime sounding and boring. P3R is a clear second for me, very groovy vibes. But nothing tops the original, with its philosophical emphasis and more abstract art style. It's what gave P3 a unique vibe immediately when I first picked it up. If I had one complaint about P3R's opening, it's that it's a bit too "poppy" and doesn't represent the themes and tone of the game quite as well. But it's a banger nonetheless.

I'm talking primarily about _tone_ (as it relates to the themes), not just the mere presence or indication of themes. Yes, the themes are nominally all still there and well emphasized: death, depression, loneliness, loss, the meaning of life, sure. But the original P3's opening gave those (very generic) themes a specific _coloring_ and _feel_ through its distinctive artistic direction and presentation (cold, weirdly alienated, eerie and abstract, as well as meditative and philosophical). And the whole game is like that, thoughtful and strangely sad. Its opening invites philosophical reflection and communicates a poetic sense of mystery and dread; P3R's opening mainly makes me want to dance. (And yes, I can see that it works through contrast: I do like the new opening a lot and it is effective at doing what it does; I just don't feel it represents the unique emotional quality or tone of the original P3 experience quite as well.)
