These words have had a great effect on me. I had no intention of doing as the Blades demanded regardless-but these words really drove home how sparing Paarthurnax would be the right thing to do. And it is true-is it better to be born good, or to overcome one's flaws and inner evils with effort and will?

The problem is it's a context about trust So while overcoming your evil nature is a great accomplishment and you may want to reward the doer, as Paarthurnax said no day passes without him being tempted to go back. So trusting a born-good is instantly better but it still feels unfair for it is unfair.

"The will to power is in our blood. You feel it in yourself, do you not?" He's got a great point. True you seek power to defeat Alduin & save the world, but you still seek power. Just as Mirrak did. Just as the countless Emperors of Tamriel with the dragon blood did, but Paarthurnax presents a point to you perfectly. It is up to the wielder of said power, to decide whether to use that power for good or evil. Even if your inborn nature is harmful to yourself & others, there is always a choice to be made.

I really like this quote. To overcome your evil nature through great effort is undeniably better for personal growth. The amount of discipline involved will make you more resilient in life. You will be enlightened when faced with evil, as you could relate and understand. You could look at life differently, be more open minded. These are skills simply being born good will not give you.
@mycoffeequest6634
@mycoffeequest6634 Жыл бұрын
It reminds me of a quote from Harry Potter: "...besides, the world isn't split into good people and death eaters. We've all got light and darkness inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are." Paarthurnax is a good argument for the case of redemption. Overwhelming darkness corrupted his heart, and yet, something inside of him desired to be good. Instead of surrending to his nature, he acted on the good that was within him. I think "evil" is too simplistic of a word to explain a concept as complicated as morality. But if we had to use it, Paarthurnax certainly isn't evil. He has more than earned forgiveness. He brings hope to the notion that real change is possible and that no one is truly doomed.

My Dragonborn is not a goody two shoes and has done evil ie sacrificing a trusted companion and giving allegiance to evil daedric gods such as Hermaeus Mora to the lesser framing people for crimes, etc. Not much better than Miraak in some ways and needs to think on Paarthanax’s words!!

It is better to be born good. The only value the effort against evil would have would be from combatting a problem that need not exist. Further, until you overcame your evil nature, you may hurt others in the process. Further still, a being who is both intrinsically perfect AND able to exhibit that level of effort would be the best possible being. That actually sounds a lot like the being Anselm argued for in his famous Ontological Argument.
