Edge Sunroof Initialization

How to program/reset/initialize a Ford Edge sunroof. This is useful if your roof has gotten slow and you've lubed it, or done any repairs to it.

Lube the rear slides as well, where they "rise up" out of the roof at the rear of the glass. Get some pure silicone spray with a nozzle/straw, stick it between the rubber pieces back there and spray it front to back, and side to side. Should speed it up a good bit.

With regards to why the window opens half way I found a note in the 2013 owners manual “this position helps to reduce rumbling wind noise which may happen with the roof fully opened “. With regards to how to do what you just taught us they wrote “see your dealer”... so THANK YOU!

At the Oakville assembly plant we all refer to the sunroof as BAMR. Even the area upstairs where the sunroof is installed, we refer that area as the BAMR room. Big Ass Moon Roof

It has to have a cover unless it's broken. You should be able to see it right at the back of the opening.

when it express opens partially thats called a comfort stop. Its so it doesn't buffer when open going down the freeway or higher speeds.

Have you ever driven at highway speeds with a vista roof fully open? If not, try it. THAT is why they dont default to fully open. The position the vista roofs open to prevents the painful thumping feeling in your ear drums from the pressure difference

I just bought a 2012 ford edge and opened the sunroof all the way and now it won’t close all the way. It stops right before it closes. It seems dirty in the tracks as if the previous owner barely opened it. Can I force close it the rest of the way?

Sometimes that works. Have the motor running. Have someone inside the car push the "close" button while someone else pushes on the back of the glass. Keep in mind that if it does shut, the glass will drop down in the back and you'll need to remove your hand quickly, or it can pinch you.

I got mine to close but not all the way it starts to go real slow however im not ever able to get it shut all the way its an 08 edge limited do you have any suggestions

Sometimes you need somebody out there to push on the back of it call someone else is pushing the close button. Also have the car running that gives it a little more juice. It is possible that the front gods are broken and it will not close all the way but it will close most of the way.

When the whole thing is shut, you hold it until you hear the shade try to "flex" a bit more shut. Once you hear that, you release and immediately repress the button and hold it until it's done

@@amirabdul-nur6466 The parts can be replaced. The aftermarket makes the broken pieces separately, also. I can get them closed, but the glass has to be unscrewed from the upper front guides, then place them in the piece they broke off from, reattach the glass gently, then have someone push the "Close" button while 1 or 2 people push on the back of the glass to hold them against the lower guides until they are fully closed. It's kind of an intricate process, and what I just wrote probably doesn't make a lot of sense unless you've already had the glass out and seen the broken parts. Sorry, there's just no easy way to explain it

I have an Edge 2013 that the cross piece between the window glass and the moon roof glass has a black hard plastic covering that has cracked and is beginning to rust. I would like to remove the antenna and clean off all the rest of the plastic to put a vinyl covering over the metal brace. What is involved in removing the antenna base plate?

To remove the antenna, you can pull down the overhead console where the sunroof switches are. Get your fingers behind it and pull firmly. Straight up above it is the satellite antenna. 10mm bolt, you can remove the entire antenna. Go ahead and put some sealer on it when you reinstall.

I had to have someone hold the switch down and manually push the sunroof from above to get it to shut. Not sure if I want to try this and see if that fixes it lol

It won't. Yours probably needs to be lubed. The arms in the back of the glass that the glass kind of rides on, you can take some silicone spray with the tube that comes with it, stick it down in there between the rubber that the arms stick up out of and spray it. Kind of angle it to the inside of the car in the outside of the car. That usually frees them up

I’m having a weird problem in my 07 edge. My battery was removed & replaced, & now my sunshade is skipping when the button is held. Before, it would auto open to about halfway with a single press. Now it will only open about an inch and stop, then another inch and stop, all the way back while it’s being held. Additionally, pushing the sunroof button before, would open the sunshade completely, then open the sunroof, now when I push the sunroof button with the shade closed, the sunroof will just open without opening the shade. My buttons don’t look like this though, do you know what the issue might be? Is it a computer thing I just have to wait to fix itself?

Initialization should fix it. Sometimes you have to do it multiple times. That said, also sometimes a battery incident hurts the motor, and it has to be replaced. When you do older ones, you need to do the glass motor and the shade motor at the same time, the new ones often won't "talk" to the old ones, since they work in sync.

It's possible that it is just stuck. You could try having the engine running and having someone hit the shut button while maybe two people get out and push the glass

It was stuck open? Common on the Edge. I usually can get them shut by pushing really hard from the rear of the glass while someone pushes "close" on the switch. Sometimes with me on one rear corner of the glass and someone else on the other side. In extreme cases, I have to remove the motor and push it shut manually. That usually means something has come apart inside the track or cables.

@@TheRealSixdot It probably means that the track needs lubing. I've attempted to video how I do it a couple times unsuccessfully. I need someone to film it while I work. Basically, you can lube the rear slides with a silicone spray....put the little straw tube on it and stick it down inside that rubber and spray it to the inside and outside. That almost always speeds them up.

@@SealofPerfection no, it stays in the open position, all the way open and will go forward just a little bit then goes back to the way it was. I however went to O'Reilly and bought a tube of lithium grease and applied it to the tracks and it shut all the way after that. Thanks for your reply.

If the sunroof is physically stuck because something in the track has failed, it won't work. But try it anyway, it won't hurt.

I have not checked on an Edge, but generally, no. Usually with these giant shades that go with these giant glasses, they require the shade to be all the way open before the glass will operate at all. Reason being, if you had the shade say, half open and you could open the glass, the air coming in could tear the shade or pull it off its side tracks.

Hi...I have a 2011 Ford edge I've had for about 3 months...im not sure how long this problem has been going on before me but my panoramic sunroof will open and close but the sunshade itself is stuck all way to the back in the open position. I can hear it trying to close but it's like it's stuck with tension..it will hand pull out a little ways but snaps right back when u let go...do u have any ideas how I might can fix this. .thank you for your time

@@katiewilson191 Sounds like something is definitely broken. Probably a cable. They are a HUGE pain to repair, and not cheap due to the labor. Most folks decline these repairs and just let them be, honestly.

The part where it attaches to the glass, it has a metal "backbone". You can squeeze it and it'll be tighter. The bottom part where you attach it to the plastic guide, it has to go on "just right". There is kind of a middle "tongue" on the blind (weatherstrip) part. It has to go in-between the bottom edge and there's a gap in 3 places that has a middle "higher" step on it. The part on the blind has to go between those, if that makes sense. It's kind of tricky to see it but once it's on, it's on.

Just saw this, sorry KZbin doesn't notify me of all the responses. Here's how: 1. Turn the ignition to the RUN position. For an existing roof opening panel motor, skip to Step 3. 2. For a new roof opening panel motor, push and hold the tilt switch for 2 seconds after the roof opening panel glass moves to the full VENT position and the motor stalls. 3. For an existing roof opening panel motor, push and hold the tilt switch until the roof opening panel glass moves to full VENT. Then push and hold the tilt switch until the following actions occur: The roof opening panel glass motor stalls into a hard stop after approximately 3 seconds. Then, after motor stalls, continue holding for an additional 5 seconds. 4. Release the tilt switch and verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open, one-touch close and one-touch vent operations.

Depends on where it's unplugged. At the switch or at the motor? If it's at the switch, then you need to get your fingers kind of "behind" the edge of the overhead console and pull VERY firmly. It has fasteners that take a strong tug to pull loose. The switch is in there. If it's at the motor, you can simply pull down the headliner at the back of the sunroof opening. There will be one motor roughly in the middle, and one on the passenger side. The passenger side one is the sunroof motor, if it's unplugged the plug will be hanging close by.

@@andreacontreras9974 Possibly, depending on what's broken. Try starting the car, and have 2 people push the back of the sunroof towards "Closed" while someone else holds the "Close" button. If you're lucky, that will do it. If not, it's going to have to go to a shop.

Yes, if the roof isn't closed all the way the shade will not close. Does it LOOK closed, from the outside? You might want to open it a bit, then have 2 people get on the outside and push on the back edge of the glass to "help" it while someone sits in the car and pushes the "close" button. Having the car running might help as well...it has a bit more juice that way and might get that extra little bit it takes to get fully closed.

@@BUSTER.BRATAMUS I have seen a couple of motors get weak and cause it. The cables and rails can also cause it, and they are a royal pain to fix. Make sure something isn't physically in the way at the front part of the track. Maybe reprogram it and see if it helps. Easiest thing to try is a new motor. There's no way to diagnose whether it's weak or not, you just have to try one and see if it helps. If it's the rails/cables, I'd close it, disable it and forget about it.
