Oh, I packed SOOOO much stuff for "future me" when I moved into my condo 3 years ago! The future is finally here and I am ADDRESSING the excess that "past me" schlepped here. Slower than I would like, but there is a feeling of accomplishment with each and every box, or bag, or container that LEAVES! Thank you, Dana, for your inspiration - and your wonderful sense of humor.

Pvg123, I've been in the same place but didn't know what to call it: saving for "future self"--so many call it "fantasy self" but that's not who I mean. It's not some unrealistic fantasy of myself but the future I have planned for myself, and am not yet there yet...and, realistically, may never be in that place (actual, physical place). Thank-you for giving me a phrase to google now! lol! And thank-you, Dana, for continuing to not not disappoint just by continuing to be fully you! M

Yes, I can get rid of bible study notes. I’ll make more. I can get rid of toastmaster notes too. There will be new material if I ever return. It is harder for me to part with college notes. Not sure I will return to that time of life. Maybe next decluttering (or moving) pass thru.

Same goes for other workshops and course paperwork. Mari Kondo talked about that, as well, as I recall. And how we are actually more apt to do something with the contact if the stuff isn’t sitting around somewhere nagging at us to pay attention to it!

I’m moving too and just went through a ton of my first marriage items and my son’s memories. I had him come over and go through the piles of items I had saved. He was like I don’t want it but you can keep it if you want it😳 I kept a few items but he only took like 4 items!!! I could not believe it because he is sentimental! I even had the disposal gown his father wore when my son was born. I let go of over 6 boxes of items. It was a hard declutter but also felt good. Thanks for your inspiration ❤

I love the fact that you are an expert in this area, you've got your home under control, yet when you dig deeper, there's STILL more to go through. You're still finding post partum care instructions 15yrs later. It's a reminder that you're not going to snap your fingers and have your house be perfect and never have to deal with decluttering ever again. And that there's probably ALWAYS going to be something to get rid of. "Future Me, isn't going to appreciate Past Me, dumping all this stuff to make decisions on." There's much to be said about the Letterman jacket!!!! I never even had one. I had patches from my activities, but never got a jacket, or a class ring. Now that I've lost my mother and having to go through her things, I "dibbed" very little. I have her ashes, her bible, a framed picture when she was about 2yrs old, the necklace my husband and I bought her when we got married, and her photo/geneology albums. I don't care about having her clothes or her shoes or her handbags or her nicnacks. I don't even have her wedding ring, and if I never got it, I wouldn't be heartbroken over it.

I recently got rid of some of my 30+ Journals I found in different places. A lot of my motivation for getting rid of things is so that my adult son, his wife, and my grandson will not have as much to deal with when I am gone. I finally got rid of old bible study, retreat and conference notes too. It go easier the more of them I got ride of. I do have the container of one end table that has a small cabinet to fit them all in that I am keeping. I have still got some to go through and maybe reread before I part with them.

This video was great. There were all kinds of concepts in this video. The "I am not going to ever use it". The just keep the part you like(cutting the feet off). My kids will never use it. I have never gone back to this. I have something much better that I do use. This thing is gross. These concepts went beyond the container concept.

Dana you are such a genius - so funny & so helpful! Your saying that "future me" does not appreciate all the stuff left floating around (or hidden away) feels like a revelation. I can do my(future)self a huge favor by "taking care" of the situation now - which often as not means I should stop "taking care" of STUFF & just get rid of it. Thank you so much!

I know right? Thinking about it in "future me" terms is genius and really helps put things into perspective. I want future me to live in a peaceful and clutter free home. I want her to be doing amazing things and enjoying life... NOT still dealing with clutter and cursing past me for not being courageous in making hard decisions.

I just used your phrase "Future me won't appreciate it." I was doing stuff in the kitchen and was going to put a butter knife in the sink I had just emptied into the dishwasher. Then I stopped and looked at the knife and said your phrase to myself, so I put it in the dishwasher. Right now. I don't know why this can be so hard sometimes. Thank-you, Dana K, for these 2 "moving" videos. When you said in the first video that you had gone out and bought the moving kit to give yourselves "containers" in which to limit items, it struck a chord. I knew that there was something in that that would help me... Last weekend's emptying the storage unit (I stopped calling it "my storage unit"), just to stop paying for it (!?!?!), and filling up the garage with SO MANY BOXES!!! was the second note (it was SO exhausting). And the above-video put the third note to the down-sizing chord that I have been listening for for YEARS! I now have the time, the method, AND the motivation (I will NEVER move 34 boxes of BOOKS + everything else AGAIN)! I googled how many and what sized boxes I'd need to move a 2-bdrm apt and got: for a "jammed packed" apt = 40 in 3 sizes (I had 34 JUST FOR BOOKS!!); a "moderate" = 33; "sparse"= 22-27. I'm heading for "sparse" but will be happy to at least land at "moderate". By Spring (hopefully sooner), I will have those storage-unit boxes down to just what I love and need AND it'll be between 22-33 boxes!! (the number of boxes needed for a 2-bedroom apartment). THEN (or at the same time), I plan to go through the 2 rooms I am currently trying to live in at Mum's ('cause they are jam-packed as well--I moved from a fully-furnished 4-bedroom house), and make them into the 2 bedrooms of my "apartment" Thank-you seems such an inadequate word, but THANK-YOU, Dana K, for your help (and that of Clutterbug, Cas and TheMinimalMom, Dawn) in getting me this far! Blessings, M

With me it is notes taken at gardening seminars. I am just SURE I will go back to look up something later. Instead they just pile up on a shelf until Future Me gets around to it. Meanwhile current me just Google's whatever I need to know. Think I will put them in recycling today. Thanks! I also have numerous tote bags that someone could use. I mean, we all have our favorite few and certainly don't need the extra dozen (or 2). Turning them into donatable donate boxes is brilliant.

During the last few moves, I had limited time and energy before moving day. I put a lot on my future self because I thought she'd have more time to deal with it without a deadline of a moving date. But I still have limited energy due to the same health issues. I like what you said about how the motivation comes after you get started. So I just need to make up my mind to start working on those DOOM boxes that have been sitting around for a year and a half. When we were packing, I used a lot of freebie reusable bags to put donations in. We only kept a few that we knew we could use.

Hey I enjoy your packing videos! don't stop! I love the container concept and I now like the new thought, "is this something that really needs to go to a new place if I do move". My mother in law had to move into an independent living home and she didn't want to get rid of anything. Her daughter had to be the bad guy and wittle down to the important stuff so her mom could live in a spacious room instead of a crowded living space. Her daughter did a fantastic job but her mother doesn't really appreciate what she did because she didn't pick all the things correctly which means everything did not get to come. I don't want to do that to my kids.

This is so helpful to hear you talking through reality-based considerations! I’m still pretty rebellious on my containers though - I’ll get there. My letter jacket was in the back of a closet years ago and the sleeves had turned to oily yet sticky. Yes, I can relate to how gross that was! It went in the trash, sad it wasn’t even donatable because it was warm. I did take time to cut off the big letter itself for my memory and you did the same thing with the footprints instead. To each her own, right?! ❤️

I am impressed, Ms Dana, how honest and transparent you are about yourself (concerning all your belongings) and to us; revealing what you are going through and what you decide to do with it is such an enormous help to all of us who ...hold on to ¨ stuff, material, things ¨ that bring no joy, no utility at this moment of our life. Thank you for being who you are and for helping us by ¨ talking ¨ with us in this video! :)) helene

I ❤ your books. Decluttering at the speed of Light was the Best and I first declutered as I listened. I have more and had a somewhat plan .. Trash ... you reminded me.. Trash Trash Trash. ### Because I'm adhd and I'm medicated I can't do the ," IF YOU KNOW where it goes, take it there now." Great exercise and normal none wondering brains it works I'm sure. BUT 😂😂😂 I'm moving and so loved your videos and books again. I'm exhausted and so spacy.. PLUS ADHD. I wonder around the house too much and have no idea what I was suppose to do. SO IF I take it back where it belongs , right then and it us downstairs... I won't make it back to my work place.. for awhile . My husband will need something g, my phone may ring and I will start on the laundry... So I adjusted that step.. Love your books and steps!!

I really liked the idea of buying a specific set of boxes but there's no way I could get my husband on board. So I went to the U-Haul website and just wrote down what the package includes. I'll sort the boxes we have and then supplement the rest from Home Depot. I'm decluttering stuff now that I'm so mad that I brought on a cross country move last year so I definitely want to bring less stuff this time!!!

Many times I use large gift bags for my "donation box." Sometime I will receive one but never reuse it for gift giving as I would a smaller one. I keep them behind a wardrobe where they take up hardly any space and can't be seen. I also keep flattened larger boxes back there for the same reason.

I love you , a new follower, I’m a little confused though. About the hangers, I’m so ocd my hangers have to match and be the same distance apart and colors together. I enjoy the beauty of the finished project. As long as your container has what you want in it does it not matter as much about the rest of it, matching hangers etc? Maybe this is your organizing style? My daughter needs your shirt😂‼️

This isn’t an organization channel, so the hangers and the order her clothes are in, is irrelevant 😂😂 Personally I don’t know how people don’t have their clothes grouped in colors 😜

And all the different kinds of hangers😂I’m new here but almost looks like she is in someone else’s home as she wouldn’t have hers like that. It’s not criticizing just an observation. I haven’t explored the different styles, ladybug etc. I’m not sure what I would be. I like pleasing to the eyes plus the container concept combined

There are legitimately different styles and preferences of how we prefer our surroundings etc. to be. For some people the visual structure in order is extremely important, for others the ease of getting things in and out is more important or finding things, or they have different categories for grouping… :-) Great that you know what feels best to you! :-)

I saw somewhere that said the question to ask yourself is “Do I want to take this with me into my future?” And that really stuck with me. Because it’s like am I attached to this item because of memories I plan to make with this item because I’m actively using or is it something I don’t use or want anymore but I can’t let go because it’s sentimental and I have fond memories of it.

I saved old Bible studies for the commentaries that came with them, being told I would refer to them. For some years I did. But after leading studies for years away from that particular group...after all, that's the purpose of it all...the old papers began to collect dust. I had, over the years collected a variety of commentaries, plus know internet access. It was time to let go. And, it was easy. Great video, Dana!

Happy for you! I’ve been looking for a home for 5 yrs 😣 and am still looking but the market is sooo hard… partly because I live in Illinois where property taxes are atrocious ☹️ I love your tips! Will definitely be doing your garbage bag/go box/keep container method if the good lord decides I can finally relocate 🙏🏽☺️ 🤍 i cut the feet off my husbands scrubs for our babies too . When all is together in your space I’m sure it’ll feel so good to have breathing room! Good job ✊

I needed this assurance that it is okay that I let my letter jacket from 1993 go! Mine was wool with a crazy sailor collar, but perhaps it will warm someone or get made into felt crafts! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I kept the container concept for my memories, and decided to download by one bin to store something else, so it had to go. ♥️
