Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I’m genuinely surprised a former marine wouldn’t have them secured in a gun cabinet though, especially with little kids around. My nephew is former military and is extremely adamant about gun safety. I’m sure there are more guns elsewhere on the property though; it’s a given you’d absolutely need protection on a farm.

Hi Jess! I've never commented on a video before, but I had a moment today when I harvested my first Dr. WHYCHES tomato, and it is the biggest tomatos I've ever grown. It's a 16 oz beauty, and I wanted to share that with you and this community, especially since I've been watching your videos for the last 4 years. These videos (and my husband's love of gardening) have inspired this city girl (NYC) to grow her own food and love getting her hands dirty in the garden. Thank you! - Annie ❤

It's not camping unless you get rained on at least once. In a tent. That leaks. The year Tom and I (Tina) met, we visited his son and daughter-in-law out at Rimbey, AB, and camped outside town. Their 3rd baby was born while we were there, and yes Tom and I and my daughter got rained out in a very leaky tent. My daughter moved to the van, but the two of us ended up having about 18 inches width of dry sleeping bag on the ground to sleep in. That tent went to the trash when we left Rimbey LOL.

I’m right with you on the glamping - it’s way to go when you’ve got littles! We head to our usual yurt next week - it’s a gorgeous hike-in site with no electricity or running water but it has a gas burner on a kitchen island and plenty of cooking equipment. All we have to bring is our clothing, sleeping bags, food and water. It’s the closest to tent camping that I’m willing to get anymore.

Wonderful memories! I hope y'all had a fabulous time! We are tent campers at heart, but after full time RVing and then giving our camper away to a homeless couple when we moved and bought a house, I have to admit that you have me missing RV life. Maybe a pop up camper is in our future? Your pantry is #goals level!!! For other tent campers: I like to prep as much food as I can before we go camping and freeze and then just take in freezer bags. They cook the other foods and then just thaw out and you have meals ready that just need to be heated.

My husband and I just got back from a vacation and we are having tummy issues. We ate out instead of bringing our own food. Big mistake. We stayed in a hotel that just had a mini fridge. Should of brought the instant pot. We left the kids at home. My son had a summer job and doggie day care was also on vacation and couldn’t take our dog so my daughter stayed home to watch the dogs plus to take care of all the livestock animals. We also had our neighbors check in on the animals and a few other people. Definitely need a village to take care of the farm when you go on vacation.

A former coworker offered her 2 burner Blackstone for free because she said 1 side wasn't working. I snatched it up, took it apart and blew out the tubes and replaced the 4-electrode igniter that melted from the flameout underneath. Spent July 4th fixing the mechanics then grinding down the surface and re-seasoning the griddle and it works like a charm!!! Total investment was $17 for a new igniter and a day's worth of elbow grease! I've done multiple butterflied legs of lamb and bacon-wrapped pork tenderloins! Love my new-to-me Blackstone, too!

I just spent two weeks glamping on a family recreational acreage (that's surrounded by farms and lakes) with my very senior mom, adult son, two dogs and a cat. Our food is a challenge. The trailer and its fridge stays at the property. We cram into a sedan for four hours to get there and must shop an hour away after we arrive. I should think about staples we can leave there and locals we may buy from instead of going to into town. 🥚

That looks like a lovely place. Family camp outs are the best. That's a snazzy camper Y'all have there. It's amazing how they design the space to fit everything now. We had a teardrop pull behind we loved caming in. The kitchen was fun, challenging but functional. Slept 2 adults and 2 kids or 1 kid and two 50 lb dogs. Good memories. I was wondering how you prepped to feed the mob. That blacstone looks like it's fun to cook on. My son Sam, who loves feeding people, said it was a game changer for him.
