My view on Finnair is that they are struggling with their business model, which was almost perfect just before 2022... but things have changed a lot for them. Not being able to fly over Russia hurts them a lot, more than most other European airlines, which is why we see them continually discounting these flights and cutting some services on these routes to preserve margins. Unfortunately, they are also hurt on their west flights due to sanctions against Russians (who were their major market), and due to SAS revival. I'm not saying Finnair risks to file for bankruptcy, but I doubt very much it makes sense for them to open new destinations. Current market conditions make no sense for them to expand.
@John-bi1lv11 күн бұрын
They are definitely now in tough spot given the geopolitical situation. They had a good thing going that sustained them with the Asia routes, and now that's a lot more difficult.
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
I hear ya. That's part of the reason I see their growth happening in the West. Honestly even with the airspace issues, the Asian markets seem to remain lucrative for Finnair, so hopefully it doesn't screw them over too bad. I mean at the very least, they're one of the few carriers that isn't dumping all their East Asia routes at the moment. Maybe we will see a resurgence of Anchorage!
@da4808 күн бұрын
@@PatrickSheaAviation Without Russian market there is not enough constant traffic for Finnair on flights to the west, especially with SAS/LOT fairly aggressive pricing on NA routes, so my prediction is that they will remain in this survival mode for now without opening new destinations.

Favorite airline hands down. From Europe to Asia there is nobody else. You're going to need to connect somewhere, so why not Helsinki. Helsinki airport is a PLEASURE compared to any major European airport that you may connect through, such as London or Paris. Both are truly horrible. Love this seat. Also love the fact the Finnair partners with Marimekko and Ittala, two top Finnish designers, to give their hard product real Finnish identity. Food in Finnair business is usually very good. Service is always exceptional. If you are planning a trip in the near future, check to see if Finnair can get you there.

That Finnair glassware is iconic. It was introduced with Finnair’s first intercontinental service in 1969…HEL-CPH-AMS-JFK, and has endured all these years. The design is called Ultima Thule. With the NY inauguration, Finnair assigned a specially trained hostess called the Finn Hostess. Probably akin to the Purser position on other airlines. The Finn Hostess wore a special uniform with a floor-length skirt, the design of which was changed annually. Finnair took great pride in their first intercontinental offering. The AMS and CPH stops lasted on some of their JFK flights well into the 1980s…with some nonstops, some 1-stops and some 2-stops.

31:01, Yes, but the improvement is to install universal power outlet and air vent on Airbus A350-900's economy class, in order to be the best airline in Finland in economy class, they don't install universal power outlet, which is a bummer and no air vent, making the cabin quite warm on a long haul flight. Even China Southern, Airbus A350-900's economy class also don't have universal power outlet, which is a bummer, but still a good airline to fly besides AIr China and Hainan. 33:52, I agree with you, Finnair needs to resume flights to some places, including San Francisco.

Appreciate the history, tysm! Edit: from a Finnish perspective, I feel like Finns don't know how to "do" luxury. From hotels to transportations, everything is sufficient enough on economy level but the more expensive options are not worth the money. A while ago some local opened a luxury hotel in the heart of Helsinki; it featured plastic plants in the spa, and sofabeds in the 6000€/night suite. 😅 So if anyone reading this is visiting us, I'd highly recommend not splurging on hotels or trainrides. The basic economy level is fine, you will not get your money's worth when upgrading. The cheapest room will have a minibar, tv, desk etc. and the ones above it might just have a few m2 of added space in higher floors.

I‘m flying to BKK next year and I’m not exactly sure which airline to take. I’m based in FRA and I originally planned to fly with QR, because I really want to enjoy the QSuite experience. However, I’m afraid of getting Qatar’d, since QR seems to be only operating the 787-8 and 787-9 on the FRA-DOH leg at the moment. I don’t mind the 787-9, but the 787-8 would be a downgrade. This wouldn’t even be a problem, if I can enjoy the QSuite from DOH to BKK. But since they are also operating old 777 there, this could become a real nightmare for me being an introvert and 6’5“ (1.96m) tall. TL;DR: I‘m thinking about flying AY (FRA-HEL-BKK), because of the well-designed business class being available on all long-haul flights. Plus, there will be more time to sleep between HEL-BKK. I guess the experience with QR would be better overall (Service, on-board Menu, DOH Airport + Lounge,…). I mean, AY didn’t have wine or Champagne on the Menu or did I overlooked it on the menu you showed? Any thoughts?

Apparently, you liked the seat and you didn’t find it difficult to find a relaxing seat position. That sounds good. The flight path to Seoul looked quite odd, during the Cold War when Russian airspace was closed as well, planes flew over the North Pole to Seoul or Tokyo, no this strange southern route.
@RoyalMela11 күн бұрын
Most flights specially to Japan and even South Korea do still follow the northern route. But yes, not being able to fly using Russian airspace hurts Finnair a lot. Flying to Seoul using this southern route is actually shorter than flying northern route. Flying to Japan is is bit shorter using the northern route, but if the winds are not favorable up north, they choose the southern route even to Japan, to save on fuel and time. Avoiding Russian airspace still adds about 3000km to flights.

As a Finn, I see this type of "saving from all the wrong places and thinking nobody notices" as a typical Finnish spiel. Like those meals; our domestic media keeps guilt-tripping us weekly about wasting food (and the kids at school are not allowed to throw anything away at lunch, even if it's inedible), and now Finnair is trying to play it eco-friendly by not giving a choice at all ("less waste"). It's all just to cut down costs, and nothing else. The whole approach (everything is satisfactory enough, as in you do get your basic needs met, but still has some room for improvement and nothing really stands out in a positive light) is a great way to describe the Finnish society. 😅 edit: spending for unnecessary technology (that fancy real-time map etc.) nobody actually uses that much is a Finnish feat 100%. Before covid and Russia closing it's airspace, Asia was huge market for Finnair. Yes, there are many airlines who fly to Tokyo, Osaka, Soul, Beijing, Shanghai... But Finland had several unique destinations too. That made Finland great operator for Europeans, who were flying to Asian destinations. It is always the best option to end your flights with the longest one, so flying from Helsinki to Chongqing, Guangzhou, Nanjing or Xi'an, after a short hop inside Europe was suitable for many. It is very stressful to first fly a long flight, then spend some time in Asian large airport trying easily to find your next flight, lets say a domestic China flight. Not fun. Way easier to first fly to Helsinki, navigate through a smaller and simpler European airport, and then fly to your final destination. Not many, if any European airline offered flights to those cities in China. Atleast not in same manner as Finnair did. Now the same business model benefits other airlines more, since through Finland it takes not a lot longer to fly to Asia, since Finnair has to fly so much longer routes to get around Russian air space.
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
It seems their China market hasn't fully recovered, but the rest of their Asian markets seem to be thriving again which is great to see. I guess we will see if it continues as things start to add up over time

This makes me so happy that my upcoming Finnair flight is a codeshare with Qatar. Non reclining seat is a deal breaker for me. I spend most of the flight reclined, but not flat. For some reason your flat configuration looked shorter than with a reclining seat, so I suspect this was done to fit another row of business class instead of giving you more room. I agree with another comment here about how us here in the nordics do not really do luxury in a good way. Like SAS is the most atrocious business class I have tried. I felt robbed walking off the plane. If you are paying 4-7 times the regular price I feel the airline should make the experience feel special, but we do not do that in the nordic countries. Often a business ticket will only get you a reserved seat between you an the passenger in the same seat group when flying within Europe, meaning you are two in a three seat row. This is not good when you are paying a serious premium. So you get a bus seat and a newspaper for €800 and everyone else gets a bus seat an no newspaper for €150.

@@PatrickSheaAviation One of the other reasons I dislike them is because when you have a totally flat bed that is not adjustable, because the plane does not fly completely flat, your head ends up being lower than your feet. I absolutely hated it. What a piece of crap. Ended up changing my return flight to avoid them.

"pre-depature piss?" Dude, find a better word for it. LOL. Great video. I love the seat. Very cool design.

One of your best Patrick. I think the AY new business seat is a fantastic innovation.

Wasn't impressed at all when i flew it and notice no airline is copying it.
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
I love the unique-ness of the seat. Still a fairly new design but it's so synonymous with Finnair at this point that an airline would have to do some real rebranding with it to make it their own
@A2dy11 күн бұрын
Imagine comparing Finnair to Emirates cabin....two very different takes on luxury
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
Honestly they are both incredible in totally different ways. I'd have a hard time choosing one over the other

I just cant get over the seat! Mainly cuz I like the cradle zero G position
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
Yea, although most airlines can't get the "zero g" position quite right. I was able to stay comfy in this seat the whole time at least

I've never flown AY's new business class, but the seats look like they came from IKEA. They just lack that plush, luxurious look that a good business class seat has. I've heard great things about their catering and HEL's lounges though. You're lucky you can look out the window when you take a whiz in that loo...the other 50% aren't so lucky hahaha

Idk... I really like the look of these seats. But to each their own I guess
