What can I say Ken...this is my absolute favorite video I've seen anywhere this year! What a gorgeous area to paddle. That is a big fear of mine. I'm always pulling my yak way up on shore or tying it off. I like to explore caves, mines, cabins, trash dumps, etc., along the way. Lots of opportunities to make mistakes, so I'm extra careful. I should teach my dog to fetch it.

That's what I thought, too. Not only did this guy go for a swim, he had to portage and paddle hard, and still walk back and forth through the brush several times just to get a few seconds of footage. This guy is an athlete.

These videos are so pleasant to watch, Ken, respect for your stamina and calmness. If something like that with the kayak floating happened to me, there would be an outburst of tantrums I'd to cut out the movie! Flying the drone can be so distracting, I lost mine a couple of months ago during a trip and prior to that, I lost one again. Fair amount of Type II Fun in this one. Glad to sit it out and watch! Last year I ended up in the drink, also in ice-cold water. Like you, the drysuit did its job, but I was astonished at how quickly my hands stopped working. Re-entry was never happening, all I could do was hug the front of the kayak with my forearms and kick for shore. Definitely educational.

We do winter kayak/camping along the Current River in Missouri. The water stays the same temp all year round and if you go whenever the leaves are about to change, there are a lot of eagles to see 😊

That's a lesson the river is great at teaching - evaluating risk to reward. Unfortunately that lesson tends to need to be learned the hard way. :)

I always tie off my canoe even for a short stop. Having your boat float away could be very serious. I’m a bit surprised you did not take a canoe for this kind of trip - portage friendly and easier to pack and get in and out of. It is certainly clear that you worked hard to get some good shots and that is appreciated. Thanks.

Good question! I didn't take a canoe for a few reasons. The sea kayak is much faster, which was a real consideration for amount of ground I was covering. The canoe would have been particularly miserable over the last 5 miles of flatwater as I dealt with a headwind. As for portaging... I knew there wasn't any big portages. At worst, I was going to have to drag around some drops. On top of that, portaging a canoe through thick forest is really difficult. It's great when you have a portage trail, but not when you don't. Lastly, I wasn't even sure I could get down the channel, and so I had to be prepared to run the main whitewater section, which would be a lot easier in the sea kayak.

One thing that made me cringe a little, is to see you trotting through the woods with a sharp bowsaw in your hand as you were gathering firewood. Inspiring. You are very lucky to have such places to paddle. I will look at the Outdoor Eats channel. Another option at rapids is to fit the cockpit cover and line a loaded kayak down the rapid using a rescue line. I have the Jura which is very similar - the stern hatch compartment is not all that spacious being so shallow.

Yup. I'm lucky to have the 'backyard' that I do. You're right that you can line a kayak down small rapids, but doing so down one the size of the last rapid I walked would be sketchy. Current that strong can easily implode the cockpit cover if things don't go as planned, and then things could spiral out of control.

Loved your previous winter solo camping video, but this one even topped that. I've only really got into kayaking this year so wouldn't have had the skills or bravery to take on those rapids in a heavily laden sea kayak. I like how you risk assessed each part of the journey giving the river respect even with your vast experience and skills. I'm planning this type of trip next season along the Lake Michigan shoreline in my Trak kayak starting with an overnighter. I'm much more comfortable with decisions around river scenes than surf zones and open water where one shoreline is out of sight. So that will be a new form of adventure. I'm building up my swim endurance just in case.

This is what I love to watch. Please do more adventure stories and reviews of high performance gear. How about a pack raft trip? Come out to the American southwest and try some of the rivers out here this winter. It won’t be any colder than this trip. The Green, Colorado San Juan and Rio Grande all are boatable in winter in small craft.

I loved the journey! Brave, but cautious man. I'm primarily a solo open canoeist, and have long wondered how you would portage (say 1-2km) with a million small bags when there is no room for an empty portage pack. I've seen some ocean kayak videos where they use a LARGE fabric grocery-like bag to care up to high-tide line. I have done four boundary waters trips with my young son in a Tsunami SP and 125. Made portage yolks for them. It was BRUTAL. I had to carry all his gear in my solo boat, and each portage was 4 trips! Never again. Where I really like to go on extended trips in Canada that's not at all practical. I'm going to try some short (1-3 days) river trips with my local paddle club and my Kayak. (Usually I'm the only weirdo in the group with a canoe)

I am new to Kayaking and LOVE your video's. I started with reviews of Kayaks trying to determine which one would be best for me. This is the first of this type and I loved it. Wish I were younger. I love this episode, I must confess that I have had a few "strong willed" kayaks that have had their own agenda, whether it be watching my empty kayak navigate a rapid while I 'm scouting or I have completely spaced a flood tide timing, usually resulting in embarrassing swims! FYI - I now work for Valhalla Pure in Squamish and we'll be selling Melker and Pyranha kayaks in 2024 based on your excellent reviews. I hope our paddling paths meet again some day. Cheers mate!

I, too, do adventures like this (not as cold, though) with my dog. I do it on an sot and do tons of portaging depending on the river. I'm in Central Montana. There's times where I'm days away from anyone with no cell phone, so I'm extra cautious.

This was the best video I've ever seen you do. Very suspenseful. Scary at times. I'm glad you weigh your risks carefully. I also use the dehydrated meals. But you never know what you get with them. Some are totally awful. Last time I went camping the stove caught on fire. Craziest thing ever. Interesting that you would drag the kayak to a safer spot. That would have never occurred to me. I'm learning a lot from this! And you swam to get your kayak back? That is the more incredible thing ever.

Well, I believe some of the fuel leaked out onto the propane/butane can and the caught on fire. Luckily a fisherman was on my camping site and rescued me my throwing a wet rag onto it. I had a fire extinguisher in the car but didn't react quickly enough. It can happen. @@PaddleTV

You can compromise on the meals .. dehydrated your own 🙂 Less expensive and prep is ahead of time (at home). Just need to find recipes you really like (and are easy). Fortunately, one of my comfort meals fits that bill so it's on almost every outing.

Thanks! I am definitely lucky to have so much wilderness around me. I might not have a gas station close by, but I have great hiking/biking trails and paddling options minutes away. :)

My wife and I love these videos, Ken - such a fantastic blend of adventure travelogue and education. Also helpful for me because I’m seriously stuck deciding between the Leo, Virgo, and Stratos for this sort of trip (up to maybe 3-4 nights). Now that you’ve paddled all three and camped out of the Leo a couple times, do you have any thoughts on the pros and cons of these boats for this sort of use? I’ve paddled the Stratos 14.5S and Virgo MV: I loved the playful character of the Stratos, but don’t like those hatches and preferred the glide and hull speed of the Virgo. The capacity of the Leo seems good for camping, but I worry about weight and maneuvering it in the narrow waterways we have here in the Mid West. I also plan to get a proper 17+ foot touring boat at some point and worry the Leo would be too similar to that. Thanks in advance if you get a chance to reply. I saw you at Canoecopia a few times but the timing just never worked out to talk to you. Hope to see you there next time!

Ken. I enjoyed so much your video and it encouraged me to go paddling in winter. I would like to see if you can make it paddling to a tropical water spot. What about Baja California, Mexico.? I heard is beautiful the sea paddling over there, and love to see what is like paddling on open ocean warmth water

Thanks Martin! I didn't use neoprene gloves because I like having my hands in direct contact with the paddle shaft when paddling 'challenging' water. I also don't get cold hands very easily, and so the pogies do a good job for me - except for swimming apparently! It is a real consideration for my next trip.

I’ve really enjoyed both of these winter camping videos (still keeping an eye out for the Ireland video too). I also want to echo the appreciation for the VO on your approach to safety. The acceptance of a safety-first attitude is one of the reasons I’ve grown to love kayaking. One question I had during both videos was about how much you do or don’t burp your drysuit. To my very inexperienced eye, it always looks like it could be burped more. What’s your take/approach now that you took that swim? Wondering if I should be burping less as I know that can compress clothing layers and defeat warmth.

If you burp the drysuit too much, it actually impedes your movement. I usually squat down and burp the drysuit. If it's too tight when I stand back up, then I let a little air back in. There should be enough air in the suit to allow freedom of movement when you're sitting in the kayak and paddling, but no more.
