The sound of that engine has no comparison in the fighter-plane world, not before, not since...it makes the hairs stand up on your arms and the ground tremble. Just beautiful! It's such an amazing plane...it's sick how short the take off was, only 400m and 2 minutes from standstill to 10.000 meters altitude. And the landing was only 500m to full stop thanks to the reversion engines.

Swedes knew how to make airplanes back then. The JA37 I think still is one of the most beautiful planes ever made. The name Viggen comes from the old folklore åskvigg, in english thunderstone. Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstone_(folklore)

Yeah, being from Sweden I've stood not far from those taking off a few times and it nearly blew my pants off! I think the new JAS Gripen generation is a really good plane considering the cost vs capabilities ratio. There's a problem competing with the americans in particular, with the political pressure involved in selling to other countries. JAS has a tremendous turnaround time on ground and is dirt cheap compared to many other jets. It has seen action in Libya, Bosnia and Afghanistan though, something many people are not aware of. It has mainly been used for front line advanced recon so far, but is a very capable multirole plane.

There was even more to it than that. The on board radar couldn't be jammed by any technology at the time. Neither from NATO or the WP. That radar also could fire the canons in automatic lock mode (which was described to me by a pilot as a incredibly violent experience). The RBS-15 was already at the time a fire-and-forget system that worked together with other missiles. Lets say you fired 5 missiles, then one missile took the lead role and all 5 of them took different routes to the target automatically. One hit was enough to cut a frigate in half. It could also be serviced in the field by conscripts and had a turnaround time that put them back in the air within around 10 minutes. They had the nickname "The supreme commander's hammer" since they would be the first to attack an invading force on the Baltic sea. 90000 hp (with AB) Swedish thunder.

The SAABJ-37 Thunderbolt was the only western plane to ever strife and lock on to an American SR-71 over the BalticSea.The offiial specs calls for 2,3 Mach,But the leading edges are infact titanium,Nowdisclassified military documents show that the J-37 endured Mach 3.0 during 15-minutes during tests in 1971.at 15000 feet.

That's utter nonsense. Although a lovely plane, the Viggen were nowhere near Mach 3 at any point in time nor version. I believe mach 2+ was the somewhat vague description of its top speed; presumably somewhere around Mach 2.2 (at altitude). And speaking of versions, J 37 wasn't one of them. Not in 1971 nor any time before or after - AJ 37, SK 37, SH 37, SF 37 and finally JA 37 made up the entire program of Saab Viggens.

Correct. The JA has the bigger fin. And a different drop-tank, and a built-in cannon and so on. But this AJ-37 museum piece, was it really modified to AJS standard before retirement? It is marked as the AJ was from the beginning in the 1960s - the AJS was painted in lo-viz grey in the 1990s. 🤔

Viggen is a total Bad Ass. and in that time totally ruled the heaven. The engine is a rocket engine for outher Space..We Swedes are always doing perfection in technology. Basically Viggen has no speed limits, beacuse it will run out of fuel before reaching the estimates. This info we keep but What A Fuck..let the world understanding our performances

Saab says the speed is 2.3 mach. In reality the speed was 3.2 mach.....The only plane who has locked SR 71. When i was a Young boy.the sparkling sound was the guarantee for that we have a strong military Power against the russians in sweden. The sparkling sound was ordinary. Every day.
