A walk-through in what are frames and keyframes, and keyframing animation in Mandelbulber version 2.12, with OpenCL rendering on GPU video card devices. I'll take you from start to finish on a quick Mandelbulber fractal animation.

Little tip: 24fps is pretty standard for movies in theaters. The 30fps is TV. If you render at 24fps, you save yourself 360 frames per minute. So if you've got, say, 30 seconds per frame, rendering 1 minute of animation, you'd save yourself 180 minutes of render time! And that's without noticeable loss of quality or smoothness in the animation. :O And 30 seconds is a pretty fast render time. If you're doing HD, then your render times per frame will almost certainly be longer, in which case you save even MORE time by rendering at 24fps rather than 30.

Hey, thanks for that! I mostly agree with your points, but.... I do think the 30 FPS is noticeably smoother than 24 fps, this is KZbin and neither TV nor movies, and most monitors have a refresh rate of some even multiple of 30 (60, 120, 240), and also, the most common tempo for pop music is 120 BPM, which is exactly a measure every two seconds, and also evenly divides into 30. So, different medium than TV/movies, monitors evenly divide into 30, and audio syncing is easy and perfect at 30 FPS and 120 BPM. Also, I'm using OpenCl and GPU rendering, and I can render a full 4K fractal video in a day or two to a week at most, depending on the settings. The time saved versus the quality and ease of syncing and smoothness of video for KZbin and computer monitors all make 30 FPS a much better choice than 24 FPS. But I do appreciate your insights and viewpoints, and thanks very much for commenting!

I have a low end PC, it doesnt run mandelbulber very fast..mandelbulb 3D is much faster.(on my PC). Does this happen with high end PC's?, or is Mandelbulber optimised for high end PC?. I prefer Mandelbulber, but it's so slow for me, so I tend to use mandelbulb 3D. edit Ahh..the answer is in this video. I didnt know that it defaulted to using CPU for rendering. I changed it to point to my graphics card(as you showed) and it was a HUGE increase. eg ..basic bulb on my CPU 6 seconds. same image but via my Graphics card.. 0.4 seconds!. Thanks.

Sweet! Yeah, the ability to use graphic cards sets Mandelbulber far apart of the rest (well, MB3D at least), which is otherwise a fine, fine program--no disrespect! But OpenCl and graphic cards make a 6 second job into a .4 second job. That's a level up!

I've done 4 or 5 fractal audio sync videos, but no tutorials yet. Mandelbulber can definitely take any audio input and use either the frequency or amplitude to modulate and modify almost any parameter. It's very powerful, although it's difficult to make a good effect that doesn't seem like a pulsating strobe light. Here's a recent attempt by me to make it work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZu8qnymjtRnb80. Cheers!

I followed the tutorial, but I can't render my file, it crashes evey time, the best I got was 38 frames then it locks, I need a forced shutdown to get the PC started again, driving me nutz coz I'm missing out on some serious art work, any ideas? Thanx, good tute dude.

Hey Steve thanks for the tips! Question? After the animation is rendered, how are we able to save it as a video file? Is there a separate program to compress with a video codec?
@StephenSink
@StephenSink 2 жыл бұрын
You need to use a program like the free Virtual Dub or iMovie or Premiere Pro to turn all of the rendered frames into a movie. Mandelbulber only outputs frames (and meshes too) but doesn’t do movies other than to view your frames when you hit the Show animation button. And thanks! Happy Fractals!

@@StephenSink thanks for the tip! VirtualDub worked out perfectly. Is there any reason for when I render an animation fine at 800x600 with 100 frames per keyframe and 60fps and then render the same thing except at 4K, the animation comes out slow and choppy?
@GoaEnjoyer
@GoaEnjoyer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, I'm curious as to how you record the animations. Do you just use a screen recorder?
@StephenSink
@StephenSink 3 жыл бұрын
You save frames to a folder that you specify in the animation pane. The default is 30 frames a second. Then you use another software like Adobe Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro or the free Virtual Dub to assemble the frames into video.

Wonderful explanation. Could you please indicate how to use keyframes to 'morph' between different fractals?
@StephenSink
@StephenSink Жыл бұрын
You can have a formula in each of two slots and then use the Weight value at the top of the fractal parameters to change the weight from one to the other. So, when they're in hybrid, for example, a Menger would dominate if you weighed more in that slot or a Mandelbulb if the weight was more on that slot. Having said that, Mandelbulber doesn't easily morph from one formula to a completely different one.
@colinfraser1309
@colinfraser1309 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response. I tried that but whenever I add a key frame, the parameters of all previous frames revert to the new one.
@StephenSink
@StephenSink Жыл бұрын
@@colinfraser1309 That's because there are parameters that you didn't right click on and "add to keyframe animation." If there are parameters that the animation is not tracking, then changing them outside of the animation pane will globally change them for the whole video. You have to add each parameter to the animation that you want to not change, or it will change globally for everything.
@StephenSink
@StephenSink Жыл бұрын
@@colinfraser1309 For example, if the glow value is not added to the animation, then changing the glow value at any point will make that new value the default and it will apply globally through the animation. Add the glow parameter to the animation, and it will change with every keyframe--or not change, as you want it to.
