You are NOT complaining, you are venting! The medical field is exhausting physically & mentally (nurse of 26 yrs). Much like the patient you listened to who felt better, you must vent or you will burn out fast. You are amazing, keep being your wonderful, caring, genuine self!

Yesterday morning my husband had heart surgery. He had a mitral valve repair. After the surgery the heart surgeon rang me to tell me everything went well and went according to plan. After that, he went to the intensive care unit, where he ‘s been ever since. I have rung the Cardiac Care Unit (intensive care unit? ) a number of times to find out how he is going. They said he was stable. They said he was on a ventilator to start with, but he is breathing on his own now. He has been really groggy and sleepy since the surgery. A nurse told us before the operation that normally the doctors or nurses would give their patients something to help them wake up after surgery, but because he had mitral valve surgery, it’s better for the heart to let them sleep longer. I don’t have a medical background, so this has been a really steep learning curve for me (and our daughter.) Hopefully we can visit him tomorrow. We were told before surgery that they expected him to be in hospital for 5 to 7 days, depending on how well he goes. I hope he keeps making steady progress. It can be really worrying. I think the really steep learning curve will be after he gets home 😮 (By the way, I live in Australia) PS - Is this similar to how a mitral valve patient would be treated in the US?

omg Rachel it's like we have the same brain, "I'm not paying attention and I don't know when I am going to get it together, but I hope that is soon" and "I love Harry Styles " ... I mean who doesn't.... but I want to say for what it's worth, one thing I learned after all these years of studying ... it all comes down to persist or to insist, even if you don't understand it today, or maybe you didn't study 4 or 8 hours, but only 1 hour... in the long time it all adds up an ends up working out. It's like that saying, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” Thank you for your videos, love from an Argentine doctor struggling in Germany :)

I'm so looking forward to this one. I was just reading an article last night about how women are far too often ignored when they complain about pain and get continually dismissed. Several cases were of women who eventually discovered they had stage 4 cancer and one was fighting for her life because so much time was wasted by her being ignored that her cancer spread. Based on how I've seen you approach patient care, you seem more likely to want to actually help a patient in pain and provide them with the appropriate treatment they need. It's a mess for patients in this field because so many doctors just don't want to prescribe necessary narcotics out of some fear of getting into legal problems. I could go on about how legislation has impacted this but that would be too long. Hopefully you'll bring up the new changes to the rules around prescribing narcotics since changes will be taking effect by the beginning of next year I believe.

Hey Rachel! I have never commented on a video before but I have watched just about all of them from the beginning (: I love seeing you be productive and get the grind on! Woohoo! Wondering if you could talk more about what you are studying while in rotations. Are you reviewing material relevant to your clinic experiences or are you just reading through step books start to finish? Another question I have is how do you structure your studying? Does your university help you stay on track? How do you decide on what resources to you and a plan to use all of them? Are people in your class doing the same or different plans as you? I know that’s a lot, so I apologize. Thank you for taking the time to read this! All my love 😊🤍

You're the reason I became interested in DO so you have no idea how much I look up to you! I'm not sure how much this is covered in medical school (from my experience with doctors it must not be very much - sorry lol) but documentation is soooo important! Hi Rachel! I'm a graduate nursing student whose clinical preceptor was the Pain Management Clinical Nurse Specialist for a few University of California (UC) hospitals. She is on an interdisciplinary workgroup that implements system-wide change. She's working on a PRN Pain Order Set where providers order PRN pain analgesics on a tiered approach. The RN would administer a 1st line PRN agent before a 2nd or 3rd line. It was tough to see that RNs are told to "start low and go slow" with opioid doses and then give the highest dose, as the first dose! Let's say Oxycodone 2.5-5mg PO q4hrs as a 1st line, but RN gives 5mg initially. What are your thoughts on ranged doses and this PRN order as a tiered approach? Thanks in advance! -Jolene, CNS Student

how has social media impacted your med school experience? Do you sometimes feel like it’s distracted you from studies, esp as a dedicated content creator? Or have platforms like KZbin actually helped you to become a better student/future physician in any way? Super curious, especially as I’m considering making vlogs when I start med school too
@doctorharry2 жыл бұрын
I have a KZbin channel too, i always consider every moment as learning opportunity. Thes' something to learn from everything that you do and people you interact with. Mostly i do videos that are medical related, even though a will spend much time researching, the knowledge i get will forever stick in my mental cabinet . So it's a learning opportunity not a time wastage.

Love this blog Rachel! Couple questions about your pain management rotation. Do IM docs get certified in pain management or is it another specialist? Also, do you see or use IMM in the clinic for these patients?

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. The doc is an anesthesiologist then did a fellowship

I just took COMLEX Level-1 at the beginning of this week. And now I am just trying to figure out how to get my brain to relax and not be so anxious so that I can enjoy this time "off" before rotations start at the end of this month. Any tips? Also, I really like the Ray Ban glasses, it is definitely a look!!

Hi Rachel, great video I really appreciate them. During clinicals what are you studying for? Do you continue to be tested or is this studying for your boards? Also by boards this means your step 1 and 2 right? Thanks in advance.

Do you wish you had done your rotations in a different order than you did? About to start M1 year and trying to prepare lol :))

I might be late here, but I am currently in the middle of the application cycle. I am procrastinating on my secondary app because I am battling a little bit of imposter syndrome. Trying my best to also prepare for the next application cycle if this one doesn't work out. Starting some additional pre-req classes in September to improve the classes I did poorly in. I hope I can improve my grades and MCAT score or just get in this cycle despite my academic shortcomings. BUT still, I rise. #RedAnt

Hi Rachel! I’ve been watching your videos from the very beginning. I have no educational background outside of high school. I’ve always dreamed about being a physician ever since I was a kid. Can you please give me some insight. Is the path to medical school hard?

Hi Rachel! Can you please tell us where you buy your hoodies/long sleeves from? I've been following you since your first med school video and I always wanted to ask you this. Thanks!!!

this is probably a weird question lol but do you ever keep your glasses on when you’re on rotations? i have to wear prescription glasses and i HATE the idea of contacts but i dont know if they would manageable during surgical rotations. also im doing great and enjoying my summer 😆 hope you are too 💜
