I can finally take my BMW R60/5 project one step further! In today's video, I'll share with you how I paint a motorcycle frame for under $200 at home, so you can save yourself a little bit of money throughout your project.
If you decided to paint your own motorcycle frame then this video is for you!
Once you have your supplies, you can get your motorcycle frame ready for some primer. To do this you will need to fill in little blemishes with your spot & glazing putty. After your frame is smooth, you can clean it off to be able to apply a coat of primer. This is an etch primer and it will bond best directly to metal. Once your primer is dry you will be able to focus on your layers of top coats. This will take a little bit longer as you really want a good coat.
Once your top coats are applied you can let your paint fully cure or even spray your clear coat on directly. Whatever works best for you!
While using your clear coat, make sure to be extra careful about your distance from the metal surface, as a clear coat is much thinner than a primer or top coat. You can easily create paint runs if applied too thick.
After all these steps, you will want to let the paint and clear coat fully cure for at least 24 hours. Once everything is said and done, you should have a mirror-like finish on your frame and be able to continue with your project.
If this video was helpful in any way, I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and if you want to be one of the first to see the assembly video, be sure to subscribe!

I think you were trying hard with this frame therefore cant knock your workmanship as no doubt you were thorough with your preparation I am also amateur but on most surfaces there is what appears to be an orange peel effect. I don't know if this was down to temperature, paint or camera effect though watching in 4K. Over many years I came to notice most manufacturers did not etch prime, prime or undercoat their frames but put cellulose straight to the metal. I started to do this years ago with 2 fairly heavy coats with about 15 mins between coats watching for runs though these can be rubbed out when the paint is totally dry (48 hrs at least) getting results that surprises many people as its usually as good as or better than 2k, an odd time I put a high gloss clear on top. Im watching and enjoy your Beemer videos, I have a 1973 R75/5. Thanks

Hi there! Thanks a lot for your critical comment and awesome advice. I am aware of the orange peel on the clear coat surface and I believe I can knock this down with a little bit of hand-buffing. I'm still learning A LOT when it comes to painting and I'm trying to share as much as I can during this restoration. I will take note of your painting process, as it is very different from what I'm used to seeing. The questions I have for you are: -What paint do you use? -Do you paint this way on all surfaces? (eg. frame, fuel tanks, engine components, small mechanical parts...) I appreciate your words and thank you for your support! Comments like yours really help me and I will need to paint more on this motorcycle, so there will be more painting-content to come. Regards Andreas

Hello to one of my finer technical mentors …. Just been doing a 1968 R60/2 here in Maine. Having fully disassembled, then scrapped off crud, and carefully wiped down with both lots of lacked thinner and also MEK … the original frame pant was cleaned but not effected… So my paint shop & I decided not to have it sand blasted, but re paint with PPG black primer and lightly fair any minor drips, then two coats of single stage simple BLACK … worked well. And though it may not be a expensive Powder Coat job, I am very satisfied now … Thank you for all your very fine tutorial education videos … cheers !

Hello, I wish to add , If using your “Tow K” clear top coat, which is Toxic ! Please be await of it’s health risk, and recommend using a fresh air respirator. ( The air is pumped directly to your well fitting face mask from outside the shop.

Hi John, it seems like you're enjoying the disassembly process and evaluation process. The decision you took for your R60/2 frame is perfectly fine and with proper preparation it will last a very long time. Back in the day BMW didn't use powder coating either, so it's another way to stay original to the bikes history. Powder coating is a great alternative to paint...but the prices to coat a frame have gone up drastically! I'm 100% satisfied with my paintjob and I hope you're satisfied with the work you got done on your bike. Now you can look forward to the mechanical side of things. Regards Andreas

I am aware of the toxicity or paint and especially the clear coats that were used in this video. Behind the camera I had a fan running which was drawing the overspray out of the make-shift paintbooth. In front of the fan I cut out a piece of filter material to catch the particles, before exiting the shop. I would love to get a proper area setup just for painting, but maybe that will follow in the future. Thank you very much for your heads-up and advice, it's much appreciated! Regards Andreas

Excellent job. I did not know about a 2 part clear coat from a spray can. Here in Richmond VA I believe I can have a motorcycle frame stripped and powder coated for about $300.00.

Thanks a lot CS Park! The 2 part clear coats are fairly new on the market and they perform really well for small projects like this. If you have that service near you for that price, I would not complain at all! Unfortunately, I have not seen a price like that near me. Then again I like to touch every part of a rebuild, so it's nice to paint if myself. Cheers

How many cans of spray should I buy to get two coats on a smaller bike like a Honda cg 125 ?
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Ай бұрын
I would recommend 2 Big cans, or 3 smaller cans. Try to hit the hard-to-reach spots first and lay down light coats as you go. That way your paint will last until the end.

is it a hard finish like powdercoating
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Powder coating will always be more durable than any paint finish, even with clear coat on top of your painted surface. As for the hardness of these products, I cannot say "How hard they are". I hope this helps, Regards Andreas

Hi there! That is very possible and you might know that better than me, but I chose gloss clear coat for this frame to give it a little bit more flair. Thank you for your comment, it‘s always good to be corrected if I share misinformation. Regards Andreas

that duplicolor will wipe right off if gas touches it. its cheap crap and no one seems to realize it considering how many people make videos using it to paint motorcycle frames. you NEED a two part urethane with hardener
