A fine job you've made of that, anyone who hasn't painted a frame would find it hard to believe how tricky it can be with the issue of overspray being a major problem. Considering the constraints of your set up, that really is a tremendous result.

The best tip I can give, and this goes for spray painting in general, before you start spraying, make a note of all the hard to reach areas, then spray them first, spray what you see last. abit of overspray right up underneath really isnt a problem, but a custy down tube is.
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
@@jackheinemann1994 thats excellent advice, you need a game plan before you pull the trigger on the spray gun. It can be difficult to avoid that plan going out the window quite quickly though. 😅 I guess that comes with painting experience.

I'm building/restoring a CB175K4 from a bucket of rusty bolts and Im going to spray my frame exactly like this, it looks mint, it'll be a good excuse to buy a 0.8mm touch up gun too

Awesome, the K4 sounds like a sweet project bike. And yeah the 0.8 patch gun is a pleasure to use with intricate items like this. I've had some good results with it on bike tanks too.

Some people go to too much trouble. I would have scuffed up the paint with steel wool, cleaned the frame well and painted over the original paint, same color. Would look as good as factory.

Great point! That's basically what we did. Needed a bit more prep where the welding and bracket removal had been done though. We're really pleased with the 2k black on it now.
@paulacabbo466 Жыл бұрын
did you clear coat after the base coat ?
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Hi, we used a 2k gloss black paint. I think it might be basecoat and clear mixed together. You can put additional clear coats on top, but for a frame or where you just want a functional 2k tough black with a reasonable gloss which is quick to use it is great. If we had used a standard base coat we would have put clear on as well, but didn't want it too glossy and our local paint supplier recommended using this.
@malenergy5177 Жыл бұрын
How do you mixing paint?. 2k paint and 2k clear?. Or you just mixing both 2k and spray it?.
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
We buy the paint from a local paint shop. It is 2k with both the colour and clear. I really don't know how it is mixed, maybe somebody else could tell us in the comments. I wouldn't use it for spraying big panels, but it would probably be fine. We have used it a lot on smaller parts, seat bases, calipers, suspension parts and it has worked great. We still put an epoxy undercoat on most things first.

@@SPANNERRASH It is called single stage polyurethane, there are plenty of cars on the road painted with it from the factory, its cheap, easy to apply and just works. single stage is coloured all the way through, were base clear has a coloured base coat then a clear.

@@jackheinemann1994 Ahh yes that's the correct terminology for it, thanks! Its quite nice and easy to work with single stage for obvious reasons. I think lots of factory reds are single stage, if I recall.

Hi buddy, What was the spray gun you used? I see it has a pressure gauge attached. I am wanting to start to spray some of my parts and would be interested in any advice. Cheers
@SPANNERRASH2 жыл бұрын
The spray gun is the Sealey 0.8 Patch gun, there is a link in the description. We have a few spray guns, nothing expensive, but for all smaller jobs, ie not full panels, we find it works pretty well. The gauge is part of the water trap, here is a link to the same one, ebay.us/wSwqAu , I'll add that in the description as well. Preparation, and patience. If you look at our previous paint videos we get quite good results. The hardest part is not having a booth to work in!

around how much paint do you need to paint a frame like this, like base coat paint amount or clear coat ? I plan to paint a bike but dont know how much paint to buy. Painting it with spray gun not spray cans. :)
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
We used a straight 2k Gloss Black you could probably do it with 250ml, but once you have used it, you will find you can use it for lots of other parts so I'd buy at least 500ml. If you want to use basecoat with clear over the top then 250ml of base would be plenty as you would probably be doubling it with thinners. You would then use around 250ml of clear coat, which would give 2 or 3 coats. If you watch a couple of our other videos painting a CB750, clear coating the Fireblade or even the E30 engine bay it will give you an idea of the amounts we use. And to be honest we usually have mixed a little too much. Good luck with your project.

How much was you airbrush paint setup?
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
That is quite a broad question, and really depends on how far you want to take your painting. If you are only going to paint a few things for yourself, you can get set up quite cheaply. For motorcycles you can easily use a 50l compressor, and I have used a 24l in the past. I do recommend a decent spray gun the Ani F160 we have now is brilliant. If you shop around, I would think you could easily get set up for £300 in the UK. Important though if you are painting 2k paints, do get a decent mask, the chemicals in the paint can really cause you health problems.
