Wow, I never knew that powder coating was a process required by environmental regulations. I always thought powder coating was some form of stronger/more durable paint coat as compared to liquid spray. Your '88 Team Model is stunning, BTW. It looks much like my survivor '88 Pro Freestyle Tour, only mine has mags, 1-piece cranks and the angled alloy pedals. I acquired my bike NOS in June, 1990 at Russell's bike shop in Downey, CA a month after my '87 Pro Performer was stolen. It came with several minor scratches from the bike shop, and I could clearly see the white base coat underneath.

Thanks for watching and commenting, love these stories. Seems to always be the case that they get stolen. My ‘88 PFT was stolen. Never got it back. Right out of my garage. It was replaced with a ‘92 PFTTM but it just wasn’t the same. That one was stolen too (locked up with a chain) but I got it back. Cool stories, thanks for sharing.

I had a new 87 gt dyno performer my dad got me. It was dayglow pink. White mags.. I remember rolling it out of the bike shop. I got to ride it one day. Someone stole it from the garage. Never had one again.

Yeah that seems to be the common theme. Had two GT’s stolen from me. One out of my garage. The other when it was chained up. I got the second bike back but I sold it shortly after because it gave me bad vibes. It sucks! You should build a replacement up!

@atrains I'm working on one now. I got a 87 frame and forks. Got to buy everything else. It won't be original but I building it to ride and enjoy. So I'm happy. I'm now looking at buying some white skyway mags. They are not cheap lol. I'm 49 years old. I got bills and a family first. I'm doing what I can a little at a time. Love your videos. It gave me motivation

I seen that video of Gary so many times,lol. Classic. Btw Niagra plating I hear is amazing,i seen a few parts people have sent and from what i seen looks very shiny bright and amazing. Thanx for these informative vids,keep them coming. Too bad i suck at doing anything with talking to a camera if not id make more vids myself of gt and dyno stuff.

@atrains Great Video, with tons of info. Thank you for sharing. I would be very interested in seeing a close up of the Tiger label @3:59. I’ve visited them last year and I would love to build a day glo with the original powder coating. Would be great to know if this is still available. Could you please share some more details? Wogart4600 Thanks for watching, I’m glad you liked it. I can tell you the exact Tiger code but it has long been discontinued because of EPA regulations. That’s what we were told by Tiger. The last known attempt to get some was in 2010 and they had a minimum order of “x” pounds and it was very expensive. 049/32600 is the product code. Tiger Drylac Pink The closest thing now is C4 labs who nails the original color.

Are there any issues with removing powder coat and converting to chrome? Is it a simple process?

Rage Reset excellent question for one that I am not fully qualified to answer. The short answer is yes but the long answer is it depends on a few factors. The frame set must not be damaged and repaired which may have been covered by the powder coat. Keep in mind that I’m not an expert in the chrome plating process but what I do know is chrome plating is not nearly as good as it was 40 years ago. Chemical restrictions limit the chrome platers ability to achieve the same great finishes on the BMX bikes we were used to having. You should ultimately check with C4 Labs to properly answer this question. They have chrome plated some Peregrine hubs for me (farmed out the work) and they came out super nice. Powder coat can go over chrome plating just fyi.

@@atrains Like he said that power coat can go over the chrome plating like Haro and Redline bikes in the mid 80s till late 80s are a great example of this. They would plate the whole bike chrome and then powder over the areas they wanted and mask off the chrome on the other areas mostly chain and seat stays.
