"It's all the colors I don't have" I SNORTED. I love the chalkiness of gouache. The matte slightly cartooney feel of them. I have only ever tried them twice and I also ran out of white. I accidentally discovered them about 15 years ago when an art store had a huge box of daler rowney colors on sale. Your painting looks beautiful! The use of colors is so rich as always! Love it!

The thing about gouache is that you will find you always go through more white than any colour. It is, by its nature, more opaque than watercolour but you can still layer. Make sure each layer is fully dry and start with the most watered down layer first, building up the thickness of each layer as you go. It will take a bit of getting used to, but once you understand it, it’s a wonderful medium to paint with. Love your work as always ❤

Your piece came out amazing! Gouache drove me insane in my art school days, the smallest amount of liquid both reactivates layers below it AND changes the color. It was big when I was in school in the 90's then seemed to disappear until the past 3-4 years with the introduction of the jelly gouaches.

I love gouache for more graphic style of art, more block colours instead if blending. It is amazing for that. Watery layers must be underneath thick layers, that has been key to making it work. Your creations do look amazing!

gouache is like, one of the OGs. it was what they did a lot of the old illustrated advertisements in back in the day. i find i have more success with it if i don't add as much white to lighten colors (use water) and to like, use it more as a watercolor for the base and then go in and use it like an acrylic over that. some people seem to have more success using it like an acrylic and they even make an ACRYLIC GOUACHE that is similar in finish but won't move around once dried. i was a fashion design student and we used it in our fashion illustration class as one of our main mediums: gouache or copics, depending on your preference though fashion illustration is mainly about getting an idea down fast, and both with colored pencils for details, fabric texture, etc. i really, really love the matte, chalkiness of the gouache, personally.

You did a really good job for that only being your second attempt at using Gouache. I started using it in my freshman year of college for color theory class and most of my favorite illustrators used it. I mostly used it now with color pencils, markers and watercolors because it's like the perfect medium for mixed media. You can use it with just about anything and it's pretty flexible with whichever paper you use it on. I really like using it on toned paper with color pencils and other things.

I love it because they're portable and more flexible than watercolor but also I struggle with them because it does dry lighter. i liked seeing how many layers you did, because I tend to think less of my skill when I do that but here you are. slay painting. stay juicy.

Where I grew up (continental Europe) it's the opposite - before coming to the UK I had never heard of acrylic paint (I kind of thought it was just wall paint?) and until 2017 I had never used it (and I am an artist, though my training was in an art field other than visual art/painting). Most kids were taught art in school using gouache paint, where I grew up. As a result I find gouache more intuitive and I find acrylic counter-intuitive! In the UK on the other hand, much as in the US, I noticed that kids use acrylic in school, and the average person doesn't know what gouache is. Strange cultural difference. Also, even after living here my entire adult life, I still think it makes more sense to give kids a fully water-washable paint than acrylic!

As someone who grew up with gouache I still don't get the point of jelly gouache though. Heavy, impractical, dries out, the paints get contaminated, there is much better paint available in (lighter, more easily portable, well-sealed) tubes.... I guess... it looks pretty? Which...great, if it gets people painting!

Gouache is a tricky medium to master because of the drying shift, light colours dry darker and dark colours dry lighter. The best tip I was given for working with gouache is think like oil painting, fat over lean. So thin gouache layers first, let dry thoroughly and use a slightly thicker paint over the top. The best thing about it is it drys matt so great for photography.

Hey, that looks really amazing!! As an artist who is familiar with gouache, I have a few tips: gouache dries a different colour than when it's wet usually, so you can test the colour on a scrap piece of paper if you're not sure of how it will turn out. Be decisive with your brush strokes because if you scrub too much it does reactivate the colour underneath. I would also advise to limit the amount of layering you do because thick paint does crack and crumble. It's also great used in mixed media and it's not cheating haha! Good luck!! You're amazing! ❤

Gouache is my favourite material to use, I am so excited you've decided to give it a try!! The final piece looks super fun and the colors look so nice! Can't wait for you to try exploring more of gouache, it's honestly such a versatile material ❤ (Also, the problem of white paint disappearing into thin air, if you even as much as blink for too long, is so real. In my days in art uni, I would buy white and yellow gouache paint in 1 litre bottles because they would be the first to go 💀)

I am honsetly surprised that you hadn't hear of Gooash before! Where I live artists usually go through the watercolor-gouache-oil paint-pipeline, so it's fascinatibg to hear that they weren't on your radar at all. You did so well too, the cartoony art looks so cool and the self portrait turned out really nice as well :) You can get deeper colors overall by using a varnish, similar to oil paint but that will get rid of the matt texture of the paint.

I think both of them turned out great! From what I know of GUASHE(lol) you can use it interchangeably like a watercolor or an acrylic (a water soluble acrylic but still) it is a bit trickery than regular acrylic because of that cause it will break down with wet no matter how long you let it dry. Even if you let the guache dry out in your pallet you can bring it back to life. I've had those HIMI jellies for years at this point I can still use it.

When I was in art school we were trained with gouache. Specifically, the Holbein CMYK set (which in my opinion gets you WAY more vibrant results). But something about the chalkiness unfortunately is that if you want to have darker areas, forget adding white to anything. Your darkest darks would never be as vibrant as just mixing the colors. Same for the light areas, areas of highlight I just treat like watercolor

You could maybe try Casein. It's like Goohash, but the layers don't mush together as much. I'd describe it as a happy medium between Guuash and Acrylic. It dries more waterproof than Giwash, but it's more matte than Acrylic (plus you can glase over it with watercolour).

Leave it to the French, right? I do like your perspective on this one. Where did all that white go? LOL. That's why they sell those BIG tubes of white gwash as opposed to the rest. I think I have two of those BIG tubes. I don't appreciate gwash as much as others myself, but I do believe you got this! If I have to spend my money on anything it will be regular watercolors. They cost the same anyway. A LOT! So might as well be on what you really like, right? So, thanks for posting and allowing us to gwash you paint this.

Since I didn't see any comments addressing this, gouache does this weird thing where lighter colors dry darker and darker colors dry lighter; so when you're painting, it helps to have a scrap sheet or testing area of your paper that way you can see what color the paint is going to dry as before you put it on the piece. I've also seen other people mention that it helps to really dilute the paint to a watercolor consistency before you lay down thicker to build up color and I can confirm. As for the chalkiness, gouache is used more in design, concept art, storyboarding, backgrounds, etc., because the colors come out so flat but you can still achieve really dynamic pieces once you know how to mix your colors correctly. Lmao when you were putting your paint in the palette I was like "girl, you're going to need a lot more paint than that 😂" really squeeze it in there!
