Personally I think the back of the hobby knife does not work as good as a mould line remover... Mould line remover has a nice relatively thick piece of metal with zero flex to it... The back of the hobby knife is quite flexibly and will bend and you put pressure the model using it. For me, in my experience, it simply feels like I don't have as much control with the hobby knife... Also I find the hobby knife back to be a little sharper on the corner edge on the back of the knife than the corner edges or a mould line remover... I prefer the slighyly more blunted edges of the mould line remover. That said the 25$ or 30$ pricetag of GW's mould line remover is absolute horse doo doo.

Great video. I love your creativity. I actually really liked the white one. I like Corax White a lot. It's got good coverage and it's not a really overly stark bright white. I honestly dislike these kits though I appreciate what you did with what you had. They annoy me because you always end up with odd numbers of Marines 😂

Naomi, this video gave me happy memories of when I was first starting out, a few years ago when Age of Sigmar was going from 2nd edition to 3rd edition. You were one of the first KZbinrs I found, when I had no idea of who to look for, who really taught me the fundamentals of miniature painting, and I think newcomers are going to get a lot of great advice from this video, just as you gave back then. As someone in these comments pointed out, I do like the mould-line remover that some of the "paints + tools" sets come with (12 paints, a brush, some clippers, and the mould-line remover, which for me personally makes me a lot less nervous than using a hobby knife does). But USD 35 is still pretty much what I paid for my first two boxes (Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunts, each of which came with their own little sets of paint, and the Nighthaunts were ... for a learn-to-paint set, in my opinion inappropriately difficult to put together because of their unorthodox / "split down the middle" body construction), and I'm impressed that these sets still look like they're a pretty good value just for the six paints and the starter brush alone. I'm still impressed that that starter brush is versatile enough to use as a drybrush without completely losing its ability to do layering afterward, though as you mentioned, I really wish that the texture paint and the overall box were more clear about not using a basic paintbrush to apply texture paint with if you want the brush to remain in good condition, and for six paints, the included Space Marines look really good. I was especially impressed with your white/black mini, particularly with the sky-blue color you blended for the winged crest. Thanks for the tip about thinning down the Abaddon Black so the edges look grey.

The white-based scheme came out very nice, but the one you based as black came out looking surprisingly good, I think because of the way you used the brassy color to outline the trim.

Yeah they look fantastic ! I think I would have added drybrushed mix of black and white to create a lighter contrast for the black armor and a darker contrats the white one, but as a beginner tutorial it still looks amazing considering the limited number of paints ! 👌

I'm in a bit of a struggle. I have two jars full of Balthasar gold and a huge load of unpainted space marines. I want to do the ultramarines, but do not have the retributior gold. I have three already painted with the Balthasar gold, although it looks more like brass/copper. I kind of like the design, but I'm worried about doing it wrong by committing to the Balthasar.
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 8 ай бұрын
There is nothing wrong about using Balthasar instead :) No one would fault your Ultramarines for that. The colour scheme is suggested, never inforced :) Plus yours can be simply be a Subchapter of Ultramarines, which don't necessarily follow the main chapter's colour scheme at all and that would fit right into the lore :)

Another option to a hobby knife is if you have varying grades of sandpaper (and patience) you can also file the cast marks and sprue joins flush with the models, I did it and it took a long time but I wasn't in a rush, just a tip (Y)

How long does it take for the paint to dry, i am starting to make my warhammer miniatures but i do not know how much it will take
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 3 ай бұрын
These dry more matte, so you can tell when it no longer looks wet, that they have dried enough for you to move on to the next step :) And if you are unsure, just give them another fifteen minutes, or half hour, and you`ll be good to go. Sometimes they are dry within minutes!

So can I paint my miniatures without primer? I painted my first space marines without primer and they look great but I have seen many videos on KZbin that recommend doing it, what should I do?
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 4 ай бұрын
Generally, primer helps stick the paints to the plastic, but there are some paints that you can get away with without primer, as you witnessed. You don't have to worry about your first marines--they're done!--but you will discover in time that some paints will not stick to the plastic as easily, and that is what the primer is for. :)

Hey, do you have to prime the figures before painting? Will the paint still stick if i dont use a primer?
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 9 ай бұрын
It's always best to use a primer first. Some paints will still stick, but priming is the best and you should try to get comfy doing so :) Just remember not to let the mini look wet when you're priming. Better to do a couple or three thin coats than to go overboard on the first coat and lose details!

@@swordnsteele712see, i just bought this same kit the other day to get started with the hobby and i didnt even know you'd need a primer. Ive built the marines but im scarwd to paint it without a primer, would it be okay to try painting without one? Would i be doing it wrong?
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 9 ай бұрын
You can try without one :) If it beads and doesn't stick to the plastic at all, just dunk the mini in your water pot till the fresh paint comes off, let it dry, and try with one of the other colours Use the method I show in this video for applying a base colour all over the miniature as the method to prime the mini 👍

Is it ok if i prime the model first or its ok to use the paint straight from the pot?
@swordnsteele712
@swordnsteele712 7 ай бұрын
It's always better to use a primer first, but SOME of the paint can be used right out of the pot. If it beads on the plastic though, you'll have trouble getting it to stick! A trick then would be to apply your Shade all over the plastic, let dry (it doesn't matter what it looks like because you'll be covering it all up anyway) and THEN use the paint you originally wanted to use to base the model :)
@nathanielangelojancamacam7584

@@swordnsteele712 interesting method of using a shade as a proxy. Since the shade is quite sticky after it dries it would act as an adhesive for the base paint. Thank you
