Thank you so much for this! Two weeks ago I tried the Fredrix canvas for the first time and it took forever to finish. I had to basically dry brush subsequent layers because even tho the canvas was dry, the paint would lift right up from the layer beneath. I was just going to give up the effort but will now have to experiment again and will definitely paint looser.

I took 18x24 watercolor paper and soaked it for a minute, then wrapped around a flat sided old picture frame. While the paper was still damp, I glued the side edges and mitered the corners. Then glued the wrapped paper around to the back of the frame. Since I have lots of picture frames with broken glass, this is how I use them up. After I was all done, I sealed the front of the painting with cold wax medium. I let it dry and buffed till it glowed slightly.

Hey Steve! You may not see these questions, as I'm watching one of your older videos. 1. If you don't have a "Scrubber," will a firm, short-bristled synthetic brush work to get similar effects? 2. Do you wait for the paint to completely dry before scrubbing, or is this technique used when paint is damp?
@mindofwatercolor4 жыл бұрын
Yes a bristle brush will do a similar task. The paint should be dry but you typically wet the area you're lifting.

You can get the same "jump" from any paints by adding a few drops of "flow enhanced" (as used in Acrylic painting) to the wash on the palette then apply it to clean water on the paper and it'll leap about in the same way. Oxgall can also be used but you need more of it - the Schminke blocks of oxgall in half pans are best for that, economical and smell amazing!
@mindofwatercolor8 жыл бұрын
You can also buy the Qor medium Aquazol.

I loved your demonstration but since there’s no glass or acrylic to protect the painted canvas, you should really put a coat or two of fixative on it. I painted a watercolor canvas years ago and there must’ve been a suggested product with the canvas because I remember sending for it and applying two coats outside because the fumes were so noxious. No idea what it is because the label and info on the glass bottle are in Chinese but so far the colors are still as vibrant as the day I painted it. Just thought I’d mention that. Really enjoy all of your vids. Thanks!

lol After my last comment on another video where I was once again whining about being afraid of wasting the good paper, what should appear in my sidebar but your world famous showdown video on cheap vs. expensive! I am actually going to start using the good stuff very soon, really! :D As for the absorbent ground, you can make your own (and reconstitute when it goes bad). I have several different recipes but haven't tried them all yet so can't say for sure which ingredients are actually better. I'm guessing none of them beat the better papers though, which is why I keep putting off doing more tests. Oh and the wc ground I bought for comparison purposes was Daniel Smith. Golden uses an acrylic plasticizer binder, which is why it goes bad. Thanks for demo-ing the canvass, if my painting skills ever improve I'd like to try that sometime!

Absorbent ground doesn't compare to good paper. I mean in the sense that they paint totally differently. Apples to Oranges.

Thanks for this. Very interesting although a bit over my head. My teacher has us working on a canvas. Just as I was beginning to get better with my washes on paper, the canvas reacts so differently when I try to do a wash. Also, you mentioned I think that you were using paint called, sounded like "core." What paint is that? My local art store carries Windsor Newton, Da Vinci & M. Graham-I don't think they have "core." I have trouble using the aforementioned paints on the canvas-so hard to get a deep color. Everything is light even though I go back & try to apply the same color to get darker.
