Good video. Why did you choose that primer? How has the finish held up?

Best approach for salt water environment: 1. remove heavy rust with sand paper, wire wheel, etc. 2. Clean with acetone or mineral spirits 3. wipe with alcohol 4 etch metal with phosphoric acid 5. wipe with alcohol 6. metal primer (2 to 3 v. light coats until fully covered). If you need a smooth surface use 2 in 1 primer and sand until smooth 7. spray paint (2 to 3 v light coats until fully covered). I use rustoleum 2X 8. clear coat spray paint (2 to 3 light coats). I use rustoleum 2X This will hold up for several years at the shoreline.

Great info. I have some galvanised railings that are just starting to rust at the welds. I was just going to give them a wipe down and use hammerite paint on them. Should I be using Kurust, then special paint primer and then the hammerite or am I OK with just Hammerite paint?

Hi and thank you... you could just use the hammerite as long as all loose rust has been removed and wiped clean. But for best results go to town on it... kurust then metal primer with rust inhibitor then two coats of hammerite... bullet proof railings. Best to re-coat every 3 to 5 years

Great video. I would normally use Penetrol in that situation but I can see the advantage to using the water based primer since it dries faster.Keep up the good work.
