Always happy to help! Any air compressor will work, but you'll have to take a few things into consideration. The big, powerful ones that you'll usually find in workshops will work, but some of them need oil to run and they're loud, too. that's fine, and you can just run a hose from the garage to your painting room. I use a smaller hobby compressor (TC-20T from TCP Global), which is quiet and oilless. I definitely recommend the TC-20T, by the way!

I actually looked all over trying to find the right barrels for basing, and then I just happened to find an old Tamiya box set at my LGS. It's from the Tamiya Jerry Can Set, 1/48 scale. It comes with about a dozen barrels, plus a bunch of other WWII-era accessories. Really cool kit!

Yeah, the models will usually have mold release agent on them when they leave the factory, so a good rinse with warm soapy water is a must. I put them in tupperware with warm, soapy water, and let them soak for 30 minutes. Then I'll scrub each piece with a toothbrush. That'll also help the pieces glue together easier, too. I definitely understand -- as soon as I open a box I want to throw the pieces together and start painting! But the prep work does make a difference in the end, I think!

Thanks! It's a Canon 7D w/ 24-70 2.8L lens. I shoot @ 1080p/24fps at ISO 1000, f/16 and 1/50. I use two 300-watt lights while shooting, which get really hot! Editing's done in Final Cut Pro; titles & graphics in After Effects CS5; color correction in either Color or FCP (if I'm being lazy); and VO is recorded in GarageBand. For editing, I encode w/ XDCAM HD 1080p24 (35 VBR), and I do the final output through Compressor using H.264.

Your videos really set a new standard for painting videos. I love the blend of comedy you do and the voice over work, as well as the awesome high quality of the videos. Thanks for doing great work. On a side note I really hope you keep the focus on Warmachine/Hordes models, but I do appreciate you branching out and doing some GW sculpts.

Thanks, man! Good choice to go with Warmachine! I do plan to do a video on my painting setup at some point. It's not too exciting, really. Just a cheap card table from Target and some shelves from Home Depot. I haven't got any immediate plans on doing a basic, beginner video, but it's possible that I might at some point. As far as brushes go, do yourself a favor and go with the good ones. Kolinsky Sable or Red Sable brushes are more responsive and will last longer than cheap craft store brushes.

Mine's pretty thick, too. I'd suggest giving the bottle a good shake before using it. But the Liquitex stuff says specifically NOT to thin it, so I use it straight from the bottle. It seems thicker than I'd usually want in an airbrush, but it actually flows pretty well.

polishing the floor. j/k Also, the weathering pigments will suck it up and dry a little glossy, so they look like fresh mud. It probably takes like 3 or 4 applications -- the pigment can hold a LOT of floor polish! Sorry I didn't mention that!
@SchnauzerFaceMinis

I use a custom thinning mix, which is 50% distilled water, 40% drying retarder and 10% liquitex flow aid. I mix all of that up in a dropper bottle, and then thin about 2:1 thinner:paint when working with P3 paints. Always worked OK for me, but some paints do need more thinning (I've found P3 Arcane Blue, for example, needs a ton of thinner to flow through the airbrush smoothly!) If you're having trouble with clogging, try a ratio of maybe 4:1 thinner to paint, then scale it back from there.
@SchnauzerFaceMinis

I definitely strip it down and clean it thoroughly, but I've never had to wait 2 days for the airbrush cleaner to do its job. If your nozzle doesn't have any rubber o-rings or seals, you could try dropping it in a little bit of acetone. That's what I do. When I start cleaning, I throw it in the acetone and then start working on the rest of the airbrush. By the time everything else is clean, the gunk in the nozzle has been completely loosened up by the acetone.
@SchnauzerFaceMinis

Thanks! I actually don't thin the varnishes. The Liquitex stuff specifically says not to, so it might cause a poor reaction. To avoid clogging, I'd suggest increasing the PSI on the compressor, maybe up to the 28-30 range if necessary (I usually shoot paint through mine at 18-22 psi, which seems to work OK with varnishes so far). Also, make sure the airbrush, nozzle and tip are very clean -- if there's already some accumulated paint, it might make it difficult for the varnish to pass through.

I use a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity with the 0.15mm needle/nozzle. I love it! I've got buddies who use an Iwata HP-CS and a Paasche Talon, and they both do outstanding work with the airbrush. In the end, the time spent practicing with the tool is more important than the name on the side. Badger, Iwata, H&S, Paasche ... all make quality stuff! I went with the H&S because I wanted the really fine needle. but that's a personal preference.

Not a big fan of Vallejo washes at all. I got the Green Shade when I first started painting, and it's OK. It's a unique shade compared to Thraka Green, but, I really dig the GW washes (at least the old kind ... haven't given the new ones a chance yet). But I also find making my own ink or oil washes is a good way to go, too. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Sorry I missed your previous question! I don't GW paints, but since they're acrylic I would not recommend thinning with turpentine. I'd use plain distilled water to thin GW paints. Out of curiosity, which of the new paints are you trying to thin? The different lines within the GW range will require different amounts of thinning. For example, the glazes should be good to go out of the bottle, whereas the drybrush and textured paints shouldn't be thinned at all. Hope this helps!

I don't plan on buying one, but if anyone at my LGS needs one painted, I would love to do a video on it! I'd really like to paint all of the Colossals and Gargantuans on this channel, but they're so expensive that I'll probably only buy the models I'll use in games. It's a pretty cool model, though, so I'd love to get a chance to paint it! Same goes for the Archangel, Galleon, Conquest, Hyperion, Woldwrath, that Cryx thingie, and probably the Mammoth, too!

Awesome! WM is a great game. Good luck with Menoth! For an airbrush recommendation, it's hard to say. It depends on your budget, how you intend to use it, how much you paint, etc. I'd suggest looking at airbrushes from one of the 4 major airbrush companies -- Iwata, Harder & Steenbeck, Badger and Paasche. The Iwata HP-CS is really nice. I love my H&S Infinity. The Badger Patriot and Badger Krome are quite popular in the community, and I used to use the Paasche Talon. All are good airbrushes!

I've never tried sealing it with a brush-on varnish, but if you don't have an airbrush, you can use Testors Dullcote. It's a spray-on varnish (gotta use it outside), and it's definitely the most matte of all matte varnishes I've come across. Be sure not to use it when it's too humid outside, or it could cause some frosting on the model. Dullcote should be available at any hobby shop (and even arts & crafts stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby).

Yeah, I totally agree on the rounded part. He looks more like a goldfish than a.. largemouthed bass. But anyway, I use Vallejos polyurethane primers, but I haven't really cleaned them with soapy water as you said in the video. Maybe that's the reason? Often I just assemple the models and start painting, then sealing it with gloss varnish, then matte. I'll try out the cleaning though!

Nah I just file down the mold lines, wash it with soapy water, and then prime it. I did! Unfortunately there's nothing in the Minitiaire line that approximates P3 Sanguine Base. I suppose Pestilence Flesh and Swamp Ground could be used to shade the white. Dusty Ground looks good on the Minitaire chart, but it looks nothing like that in real life. And I guess snow white or skull white could work for the white, though neither of those are really all that white. So you might need VMA white as a final white highlight on these menoth models. Looking forward to the videos!

Thanks! It is the metal version. I don't really care for the plastic one -- it looks too rounded, or something. This one has nicer lines, in my opinion. The plastic resculpt also looks like he's working out with shake weights, too. I haven't had too much trouble with paint chipping on metal models. What kind of primer do you use? I like the Vallejo polyurethane primer -- it creates a really nice bond even with metal!

I actually don't have any of the P3 washes, so I couldn't help you there. Your work is fantastic, I really need to know, when your are masking your models it looks like blue tac and I assume low tac masking tape but do you always varnish or purity seal your model before masking? At the moment I'm using Gw paints thinned with thinner and the paint rubs off when touched until I seal it, when I watched your hair spray weathering vid ( an epic vid btw) I wondered if you sealed it after the rust coat and after each armour colour or do vallajio paints just work better? I noticed you've switched over to using gloss varnish from the matte varnish you used in the Karchev video. Is there any reason why, or is it just working better with the oil washes you're doing? Would using a matte varnish between acrylic layers work well until you're finally ready to commit to the gloss and do the washes? What would be the difference between using varnishes and mediums?
