I love palette knife paintings. I recently saw some of your work in a gallery in Santa Fe. Love your technique. I am a pastel artist but I am now trying to move into palette knife painting using acrylic paint. (I can't tolerate the smell of oil paint and the mediums. Even the odorless mineral spirits gives me a headache. lol It may be odorless, but there is still toxins in there.) Thank you for this video; I enjoyed watching it and learned a lot from it.

I did a couple of palette knife paintings myself and did not touch them back with a brush to keep the rawness. But i like you idea of smoothing out several areas. Learnt a lot. Awesome job.

Recently started using a palette knife to paint with acrylics and found out that it gave me the look I had been searching for. Great video Brad. Roughly how long would this thick impasto paint take to dry? Do you use a quick dry medium with your paint. Cheers.

Thick paint takes a long time to dry and I don't generally use driers. It will be dry to the touch in two to three weeks and dry all the way through in six months or so.

This is the fifth or so video I've watched of yours. All of them are very informative. Would you mind showing the finished product a little better? This video cuts a little short. The one discussing color and the correction you made with hue also cuts short and could even be strengthened if you showed a comparison before and after. Thanks so much for your videos. wow, thanks lots. i was going to ask if you ever used the long brushes. they seem made for your style. i bought a bunch of long rosemary mongoose but they cost so much i'm afraid to get them dirty...:-) nice video, you seem to be working faster these days. is that right?

I am working a little bit faster these days. I think it's my confidence I've gotten from dealing with anxiety. I'm also enjoying using a wider variety of brushes. Working with the palette knives have been good for me.

What paints do you use please?

I use a wide variety of different brands, depending on the specific intensity of color. But mostly I use Gamblin, RGH, Windsor & Newton, and Williamsburg oil paints.

Perhaps try one or two real time video recording while silent? Maybe show mixing paint, but also explain here and there of what you are doing. Many find just the sound of paint mixed and applied on canvas therapeutic.

I like long videos, but also shorter ones like this from which you can absorb so much information and new ideas. I always used to use round brushes - but I think one moves on over the years, and now I employ filberts, flats, rounds, fans, riggers: and indeed knives: I was inhibited for years by advice in a book that one shouldn't ever combine brush and knife-work, but aim to complete a painting in one or the other; took me a long time to realize this was dogmatic and bad advice. If I may ask you a question - I'm not a great devotee of the Bob Ross method, for all sorts of reasons (and no disrespect to him is intended) but I have wondered if his trademark palette knife would not be a good investment - it seems to have a versatility which my knives (which are much smaller) lack. I wonder if you have a view about this?

+Robert Jones If it is the knife I'm thinking of it is flat like a butter knife? IF so it is one I don't routinely use but others might find it useable. I agree that it is best to avoid adopting others ideas as usable for us. I use use a fan brush quite routinely now and earlier in my career I could find no use for them. My current strategy is to have as many diverse tools in the studio as possible. When I need a mark I currently can't get with the tools I routinely use I reach for one of the ones I don't often use (although I have yet to do this with my Bob Ross knife perhaps someday I will). +Brad Teare Thanks for the reply. It's actually a wedge-shaped knife (would that be a butter-knife - I'm a bit primitive on the cutlery front!) with a long edge and a shorter one; it seems to be more rigid than a conventional painting-knife. Ross relied on it heavily, and while - as I say - I'm not a devotee of his or Bill Alexander's painting methods, it does look like a potentially useful tool. Anything's good that helps you make a mark, I think - even though a lot of painters just turn their brushes round and score into their paintings with the pointed end, thus obviating the need for several purpose-built implements and avoiding some expense. So I don't go out looking for more gadgets and ways of spending money, but now and then something appears for which I can see a real use - and the Bob Ross knife is one such. My knives are decades old now, so perhaps I should just spend some money and give it a try! Good to hear from you, please keep posting these demonstrations, which are packed with information and extremely useful.

Yes, yu could use the same technique using acrylics but I would add some texturing medium like Golden's High Solid Gel to keep the texture as dimensional when it dries.
